I love that Ellie got herself out of the situation physically, like Joel wasn't really needed in that respect, but he still needed to be there in the end to support her after such a traumatic experience.

Some people complained that they changed it to having Joel find her outside instead of interrupting her inside, but I honestly think this is so much stronger for both of their character arcs.

It is very similar to how it is in the game but one change made is they reunite outside instead of inside, I think even just those few extra moments improves.

This is the episode where we really MEET Joel, and get a glimpse of just why everyone who knows him is terrified of him. He knew going into that that those two men were going to die horrifically - he had the pipe ready. He also was completely casual through the whole thing, like he was finishing up an unpleasant chore. For the average person, torturing information out of two people, even for your daughter, would be INCREDIBLY traumatic. For Joel, it's an inconvenience. This is clearly not the first time he's done this.

We really meet Joel in the sense we see his loving, caring, protective, fatherly side coming out again too.

I like to see it as the merging of his two sides. Ellie made him want to be a better person, but being a better person made him feel weak and not up to the task. When Ellie fought to keep him alive he realized he needed to fight too, because they needed each other to survive. She'd been taken by monsters and she didn't need the 'better' Joel to come and get her, she needed the monster. But unlike his past deeds born of nihilism and indifference, this time it was driven by brutal and efficient purpose.

@@Dilligff Right. Previously, he became vicious and dangerous because he was just surviving, without a real reason to live. He just didn’t care, and couldn’t make himself feel anything for anyone, which is why he kept Tess at bay too. Now, he has finally allowed himself to care for someone again, and his dangerous side is used to protect someone.

You are so right about Bella's performance here. This was her Emmy nomination episode (though I felt it could have been for any of 7, 8 or 9). She sold both the rage and the 1000-yard traumatized stare afterwards so hard. There's a quote from Bella about Ellie hacking David's face up that shows he wasn't wrong about her violent heart: "There was a part of her (Ellie) that enjoyed that violence, and that scares her almost more than what David tried to do." They hinted at it in the first episode with Ellie's fascination with Joel's attack on the soldier. a couple of my favourite details from this episode were that the rifle Ellie is holding when she confront David and James over the deer was the real one, not the prop rifle. Craig Mazin liked the fact that the rifle was too big and heavy for Bella to hold properly (he was off-screen reminded her to keep lifting it up) and it just looked more real. Also, Bella said that was the coldest day of shooting on location (-17C) so the rosy cheeks and slightly slurred speech were not faked. And how did they find a restaurant here to work that well as a stand-in for the game? It was a real steakhouse at the resort where they filmed this, and the fire was practical. Amazing production.

Joel finally calling Ellie "baby girl" shows his total acceptance of Ellie as his family, no more reservations left inside. Ellie fighting so hard to save Joel and herself, and all that pain and rage coming out as she hacked away at David's body, but when she finally realized it was Joel there... she totally surrendered and let him take care of her in a way I don't think she's ever done before - they're bonded now, for better or worse. The acting in this episode by Bella Ramsey is stellar, just like Pedro Pascal's acting last episode, and they both deserve the Emmy nominations they got.

As someone who has played the game a few too many times over the years... you GET this story. I've seen other people's reaction to this show but no one I've seen so far understands this plot better than you. A lot of people miss important things, or miss to actual point to things. Not you though! Love watching you experiencing and taking in this beautiful story. I don't know if you play video games, but you should play this one! Also, the guy Ellie stabbed in the episode is Troy Baker, the voice actor of Joel in the game.

The "baby girl" at the end gets everyone right in the feels... Ellie has got to be seriously traumatized and broken by that, and even with the reunion with Joel to comfort her, the PTSD has got to be there. It feels like a huge turning point for both of them.

It is interesting that in this case, and even in other movies, it is the people that turn out to be scarier than the "monsters!" A lesson Victor Hugo tried to teach us with the Hunchback of Notre Dame. This show does an exceptional job, I think, of creating characters that are deep, and well fleshed out. You kind of get the sense that David is a creep, but it is only through staying with his character for a bit that we get a sense as to why.... and when you think, ah! he is a leader of a cult and has everyone mind controlled through violence... hitting the little girl and telling her he's her "father" now. Then a leader of cannibalists... ah that is bad! But then it gets worse!! Thank goodness Ellie survives! You are right, though. There are plenty of "monsters" like David in the real world. That's what makes it so scary!

I can always tell a lot about a person based on how they react to the scene of Ellie murdering David. Some people cheer, some people just stare, and some people get emotional (like me). There's definitely a sense of righteous justice and relief that he's dead, but for me, it's overwhelmingly tragic that this child has been thrust into this situation and ultimately forced to fight for her life. She clearly went above and beyond, and after 21 strokes with the blade, you can see on her face that part of her is dead as well. She might recover, but she'll never be the same. As someone who has experienced trauma, including childhood sexual trauma, this just hits so much differently.

I've watched quite a few reactions to this series and read a lot of comments and the vast majority of people seem to simply cheer Ellie on in killing David, so you're immediate understanding of and sorrow for the fact that Ellie just lost whatever innocence she still possessed and will be traumatised for life and forever changed as a person following what David put her through and forced her to do is very refreshing. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the Season 1 finale. I'm confident that it won't disappoint.

5:10 It wasn't a setup but coincidence, hence why he blabbered about fate. The guy he's referring to is the one with the baseball bat at the university. 7:08 Just standard bible stuff. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 9:25 Damn, poor Scott Shepherd. lol 15:28 ... 👀 23:08 The reason Ellie was able to grab it was because he went to open his trousers with his left hand. By the way, David's sidekick, James, is portrayed by Troy Backer, the actor for in game Joel. Next episode you will also see Ashley Johnson, the in game actress for Ellie. Events like the one in this episode, but also the others, and many more that they had to cut out or you'd read about in notes in the game are a stark reminder of just how broken and fucked up the world is, thanks to the infected, which underlines the importance and meaning behind Ellie's immunity and her being the potential cure for mankind, to heal and bring back humanity.

"it's happening rn in Palestine." Which will only make the situation worse. When people not only believe in a god they can't even prove exists, but is absolutely sure that God has their back, it makes them irrational and unable to back down. When you have two opposing groups of people who both believe "god" is with them, you have a hopeless and self perpetuating situation which will never end and will only cause death and suffering. Remember, both sides can't be right about not only a god existing, but that god is with them, but both sides can both be wrong.
