I always love how after Elena mentions that maybe if they had met first, Damon just said ‘yeah maybe’ and he doesn’t tell her that they actually did or use that to influence her decision/manipulate her.

In this episode when Elena and Matt are talking she basically says something like you have to love the one that made you want to live or saves your life, something along those lines, I can't remember the exact phrasing. And I didn't catch it the first time I saw the episode but now I understand it was there all along, she was going to choose Stefan. I don't doubt that she really loves Stefan but it feels that she chose him out of a sense of gratitude towards him for saving her and I don't mean that only literally but metaphorically too. It fits her character. And of course loving Damon is dangerous, unknown and potentially heartbreaking. She says it, it consumes her and that's scary as all hell. Too much for her to handle in the state she's in. And let's not forget that no one wants her with Damon, he's still in everyone's eyes the wrong one. So of course, I hated the decision at the end but I understood it.

@@ophiluna caroline, Jeremy and even Alaric warned her about her closeness with Damon. Not to mention it would hurt Stefan. Whenever Elena expressed feelings for Damon earlier on many of the characters judged her, and she even herself used to judge herself and feel like her feelings are wrong

This episode was soo good. Knowing Damon met Elena first but compelled her to forget so that she would get what she wanted out of life, Damon’s face when he realizes Alaric dying means Elena is too + him rushing to the hospital saying ‘where is she’, and Elena choosing to save Matt 🥺

Yeesh, sorry the replies are so bleh, people need to relax. Lol, I always thought of it in that while she probably could have escaped in whatever way you imagine, elena not only of course has the desire to make sure everyone else is safe first and trying to save her too would have slowed stefan down from saving matt, who she probably thinks may die faster than her since he is unconscious, but I’ve kind of thought that it’s also possible at this point that she might just be....content with dying if that’s what it comes to, especially if it means a friend will be saved. Being in the same exact scenario she was in when her parents died, she may even be feeling survivors guilt, and want to pass the same way she originally should have with her parents. She may think that since she already should have died like that, she owed it to matt even more to save him instead. Her life has been so terrible the past couple years, she’s lost so many family and friends and dealt with so many crazy life/death scenarios, I personally kind of see the scene less as a like “oh silly tv rules, she could have easily escaped!” and more so as...well maybe she was just ready to let it all end 😬but thats just my perspective! I know that stefan probablyyy could have saved them both but I guess we’ll never know lol

Elena chose Stefan out of guilt and feeling like she owed him that before he died, obviously still being too afraid to admit she was in love with Damon, you can’t convince me otherwise fight the wall.

exactly basically, the situation between matt/elena mirrors stefan/elena where she feels safe and doesn't want to let him go i actually do like stelena too but you can tell later on especially after stefan becomes ripper!stefan she's just holding onto what she knows and of course, everyone around her hating damon doesn't make things easier why she couldn't even admit she liked damon for so long was due in part to everyone around her discouraging it elena has a had time letting go of old memories/the past and likely because she just loses everyone so i think she's trying to hold onto the old her even though she has actually moved on even before turning into a vampire

@@nightfrost1891 I always thought it was an odd decision from the writers to show the parallels between Matt and Elena and Stefan and Elena just to have her choose Stefan at the end of the episode, like you’re showing me a flashback of her realizing that the right thing to do is to let go of Matt because she doesn’t feel the same about him anymore just to have her do the exact opposite of that right now? It doesn’t make sense but 🤷🏻‍♀️ And yeah, I agree with you on the fact that had her friends (specially Caroline) not been so against her feelings for Damon and pushing her to Stefan she would’ve been able to admit her feeling way before.

You made it to one of my favorite episodes of TVD. And you just saw one of my favorite Delena scenes, I would say top three scenes. Though many love (and I do too, don't get me wrong) the season one dance, or Damon's confession and compelling to forget of season two and the steamy motel make out session of the season three, for me this episode's scene of how they actually met is one of the best ones. I remember that when I saw it I understood the first episode of season one and the third episode of season one. It all made perfect sense. And of course I'm not even going to pretend that it was planned that far ahead because that's not how shows work but it fit perfectly for me. How Damon instantly knew why Stefan was in Mystic Falls and stayed, he'd already met Elena by that point. And why though we were led to believe at the beginning that Damon was "bad", there's that scene in episode three at the end with Damon stroking Elena's hair and the softness of his action like he's really looking at her and not an identical version of Katherine. You can read whatever you want but I love that even though you can probably say it wasn't planned, it fits with the story and Damon's character, and the scene with how they met redefines those scenes for me.

This is the episode where I understood why people hate Matt. I never liked Matt but I understood why he's necessary to the story but him taking Elena by force was definitely the dumbest thing he's ever done. And I also hated Stephan's decision and the fact that a vampire can't drag two humans out of the water

i loved this "plot twist" of damon meeting elena first, cause nobody would've guessed and i remember me and my sisters freaking out it was so funny and adoring at the same time. but when i rewatched the whole series again the second time i kinda thought damon dreamed about this or smth?? like i know it sounds ridiculous and i'm doubting that myself, but i just can't see season 1 damon full of "i'm gonna put you through misery" be this gentle and sweet telling someone to live their life to the fullest. whatever that was tho, it was a great scene.

Brava and again Brava Sofia for your reflections, I would like to pay homage to the human character Elena honestly I was very sorry her "death" has done so much in these 3 seasons to keep her alive and even if sometimes she bored me because she found how self-sacrificing and dramatic solution she fought with her human means to stay alive and protect her friends. I like Katherina more temperamentally but I admire Elena more because despite all that she lost, she suffered what she was, trying to always be Elena empathetic, compassionate, without malice despite the mess with the two brothers. If katherina for all that she suffered for survival has become selfish, mischievous, evil, Elena instead has not dirtied her soul and despite she loves vampires and neither had a relationship with one, it is admirable to want to remain human and the importance that he gave his humanity what katherina didn't. Now Stelena and Delena I'm sorry for who Stelena is I have been too and I still appreciate them as a couple but guys it's weird not to admit that Elena has always been Damon's, even if Elena told Matt that it's not about gratitude to Stefan actually is. Stefan played well the card of entering Elena's life just when she was emotionally fragile and depressed and how they both found someone to get by but if Damon hadn't subjugated Elena, Stelena would exist I think not also because in this first time that yes you see clearly how Elena flirts with him in the second first time vhe you see you that is 1x2 where he kisses his hand she smiles again and flattered, she flirts with him. That's why Damon dared to fall in love with Elena because he always knew that on the other side there is something nobody does not fall in love with if you don't have the signals to do it. Obviously big disappointment when she chooses Stefan again closing her feelings and desires again thinking it was right but if you pay attention to their dialogue Elena leaves Damon an open door to the future when she says "I don't know Damon now it's Stefan I don't know for the future and you can, there are also the others "makes him understand that his choice is not just for Stefan. Damon is a strong passionate and loves with extreme vitality and when he takes losses this destroys him not only to lose his friend again but also the woman he loves, seeing her despair on her face after remembering how he met Elena was really emotional . Damon saves Rebecca's life and she goes to kill Elena well I hate Rebecca and especially for killing Elena. Bonnie is starting to be very strong I love her she is my favorite female character she has moments that I don't like and some flaws like hypocrisy but she has a crazy development and she is better at her flaws is a mix between Elena and Caroline that's why I love it. I really love the development of the love-hate relationship between her and Damon and Bonnie starts seeing Damon with different eyes and understanding his philosophy of doing things. Together they are a beautiful team, the impulsive and crazy vampire Damon and the powerful and powerful Witch Bonnie.

We know Season 1 Damon was way different than he was at this point and throughout season 3. He had grown so much over the seasons. But I feel he did what he did when they first met probably because Elena looked exactly like Katherine and he felt a connection with her. And even though season 1 Damon did a lot of wrong things but we saw that he still had some goodness deep deep down so that's why when he saw Elena, he felt something and did that. Also, in season 8 when they were working for Cade, he didn't wanna kill the girl who was a doctor and looked like Elena. I don't remember clearly what exactly was the situation then but Stefan had his humanity off and he wanted to kill a girl that looked like Elena and Damon didn't. So I guess that's what happened here.
