I always thought that Stefan respecting Elena's choice has more to do with Stefan himself, than with Elena or his feelings for her. He did what she asked, because of his own past experiences that taught him to value the idea of free will. He even says earlier in episode 3x22 when he was talking to Matt ''Nothing wrong with free will. You don't realise that until you lose it.'' Stefan knows this better than anyone, because he has been on both sides of it. He has been the one to take the choice away from someone (making Damon complete the transition and become a vampire), and he has been the one whose choice was taken away (Klaus forcing Stefan to drink human blood, to be his slave, to bite Elena, to turn his humanity off). Stefan has been on both sides of the argument and both times, it ended really painfully for him (Damon hating him and promising him an eternity of misery; almost losing Elena because of the consequences of what Klaus put him through). After all that, it's very much in character for Stefan to let Elena choose for herself. Anything else just goes against what he's learned and experienced during his life.

Was Stefan's life difficult? Is it just because he has an addiction? But what if it has always been the one loved and the one helped? Damon also promised him a life of torment but not really the fact that over and over again Damon looked for his brother and start over it is true that Damon bore certain grudges against him but never took seriously what he promised is bad that he did is also due to the little humanity he had, even Damon has suffered not indifferent violence not only Stefan and yet he does not cry on himself as much as Stefan and among other things for Stefan's sake and for his protection. But yes I do and say like Damon "always poor Stefan" 😂😂 it seems that when he is suffering or has bad behaviors all poor poor when Damon suffers and has bad behaviors he is never the poor but the bad one. Stefan this season is a big compliant, hypocritical, jealous and envious along with the beautiful Caroline ... and on a psychological and emotional level he is destroying and hurting Damon big time because for once he is not the choice because for once he is not in the center of the attention, he has always diminished Damon and Damon to the face of the promise has always defended and spoken well of his brother ... but he loves once poor Stefan.

Exactly, Sofia I agree with you on Damon, this flaw of his called "selfishness" makes us understand how human Damon is. I often see in the comments people saying that Damon to save Elena would kill everyone in a certain sense it seems this but it is not quite so, Damon in any rescue he had to do for Elena has always evaluated the various chances of survival of everyone involved including himself but put to the choice and having no other possibility always chooses who he loves regardless of who you can of the involved will die or be injured and this is what all of us would do, even if in the comments we like to say that this is a negative aspect. When Damon saved Elena from Klaus in 2x18 he never thought about killing Bonnie he evaluated, organized and made sure everyone was safe but as he said if things went wrong and he was forced to choose who save would have chosen Elena and it seems normal to me that he loves Elena not Bonnie and this has also happened on other occasions. Stefan for heaven's sake it looks beautiful to respect Elena's choices it is very important to have a partner so however there are times where Stefan had to impose himself with Elena and since he always respected his choices once he would have to do what he wanted without thinking about it that Elena wants because decisions are pressed in two and it must be okay with him too or we compromise pyoi we talk about life and death decisions that it was not just up to Elena to decide but this demonstrates that all this love that he shows for Elena doesn't actually love her, yes, but not to the point of living without her over and over and accepting that she could die. I also agree that Stefan neither needs less than Elena, indeed he neither needs nor done, but Stefan actually never needed anyone and no one only exclusively Damon but otherwise no, women for him do not I am vital, he loves him, he respects him but he does not do a fundamental thing in his life. Damon, on the other hand, is completely in need of a woman's affection, a woman's love, for him Elena is his guide, he loves Stefan and Elena in the same way and without both of them he doesn't live, Damon is emotionally fragile and later we will discover why. I hate Rebecca a lot but I have to say that I felt a little sorry for her when Klaus treats her like this and I also like what she said to Klaus but it seems she doesn't learn because she keeps doing what her brother does which is destroying lives by having a toxic brotherly relationship xon Klaus. Bonnie is undergoing her evolution as a witch as a supernatural being and needs to face even his dark side feel the power and strength to which his magic entails, he also learns that unfortunately for survival in certain moments it does not seem like you can choose white but also black even if this has consequences, because even the witches have their dark side.

I actually think it IS Matt's fault that both him and Elena were on that bridge in the first place. If Matt hadn't of drugged Elena and taken her from her house, they wouldn't be in this predicament. Rebekah can't enter Elena's house, because she's not invited in, so it wouldn't have been that easy to kill Elena for Rebekah. Sorry but I do blame both Matt and Jeremy for the whole ordeal. Don't get me wrong Rebekah did kill her but if it wasn't for Matt, then it wouldn't have happened that way. I understand where Damon is coming from. He has little patience as it is, so is totally in character he reacts the way he does. And I agree it isn't selfish of Damon, it's selfless of him.

You know, looking back at TVD I think I get now why I was shipping Elena and Damon, and not her with Stefan lol. The thing is, Stefan (and Elena with Stefan) like... live life like a burden, a responsability, they're *constantly* miserable, so much that it's unrealistic. The way he's like "you'll see, being a vampire is horrible, every day is horrible"... yeah thanks for cheering us up, dude. And like, Elena, I'm sorry, either you're a saint on earth, or you're an unrealistic character, but NO GIRL in her 16s would be like "oh yeah I'm totally fine with drowning because it saves my friend uwuw"... you're supposed to want to live at 16. You're supposed to WANT to be happy. I don't mean that, that if you're not, you're wrong and you've got something wrong, I mean in terms of tv show writing, character writing. Elena, during these seasons where she's with Stefan, has this self-righteous vibe about her (a lot of characters do on this show tbh) about how they'll sacrifice their lives and everything they have and blah blah blah, and it's like... NO? That's not good character writing. It makes the characters kinda holier-than-thou, or even unrelatable at worst. I've never felt sorry for Stefan during his martyrdom journey because he's constantly putting himself in that position, he's constantly sacrificing himself, bearing everyone's cross, yeah, kinda "doing the right thing", but it makes him just... a moral compass, a moral ideal and not a "humane" character. And Elena with him, is like that. But just like Stefan himself, Elena is constantly miserable. She *never* puts herself first, which is why she needs a person like Damon in her life, and I mean, ofc being selfless is good, you're a good person when you're empathic and think about others and all... but TO THE POINT OF DYING? When you're a teenager? No fear of death, no trauma, no thinking about Jeremy, nothing? That's unrealistic at best, or portrays a character that is so miserable that they're suicidal at worst. At least later on, Elena seems to actually CARE about living. I remember watching this episode and like, FINALLY having something with Elena, when she drank that blood to actually survive. Like, FINALLY she admitted to herself that NO, she does care about herself, she's not all the time better than everyone else, she's not willing to die rather than yknow, being selfish for her own sake and survival. It made her more complex and more down to earth, which is when she becomes more interesting and multi-dimensional as a character.

I do not blame Klaus at the end. He spent near 1100 years trying to break the curse. To find out the Original witch created a loophole. Ester would be proud, Rebekah destroyed the limited doppelganger blood Klaus had. Only after she insured Elena died. Rebekah finished Esters work for her. Rebekah has a crippling Fear of abandonment. Rebekah took his limited ability to create more of his own kind. Leaving him alone.

If you have seen the whole show you know how important Matt is in Elena's life. It's just that most of tvd viewers don't really like Matt, that is why they say just let him die. He had to make one of the hardest decisions of his life and knowing what Stefan has experienxed he chose to respect her decision. That really showed how selfless he is. I love him for that. I am not sure if I would do the same, but I totally support his choice.

I agree, you have to be able to respect the decisions of the person you love but it also goes to a certain extent. When said person is doing something that could put their life at risk, I think it’s logical to do whatever you can to prevent it. Damon interferes with Elena’s choices when it involves her getting hurt, which I get considering she tries to sacrifice herself for others a couple times.

@@skylar6709 That can be true but up to a point... Yes, Damon going against Elena's "choices" when is something that puts her in danger is something many people who love someone would do... But Damon's constant attituded (and this is something that he confesses time and time again), of not only ignoring a dangerous choice Elena has made but sacrificing or endangering every body else's life in order to save Elena, no matter who else gets hurt, innocent, guilty, everybody else can die or get hurt except Elena (and in times Stefan) is not as cute as a lot of people seem to put it... This is a concept that is best shown with The Original family as well, this idea that in protecting each other doesn't matter who many bodies you go thru; this idea that me at my loved ones are more valuable that other peoples families or loved ones is a terrible one... And you have a character like Stefan that you have some people even calling him weak or lesser that Damon because he doesn't want a pile of bodies and collateral damage and tries to do what he can to avoid it.

@@Alewaxon I get you but collateral damage is always going to be there especially in a situation where you are saving you care the most about. I lean towards Damon more(even though his ways can be very extreme) because I believe I would do everything to save the people I love even if it's not what they wanted. I'd rather them be alive and mad at me than dead. I also respect Stephan's ways of giving people a choice it's just that a lot of times those choices haven't gone well and in a time like that he should have just done what his heart tells him cause it's honestly the most logical thing anyone would do.

Eldar I get what you’re saying but Damon has always said that he has a small list of people he cares about and he does go to extremes to save them (wrong or right) but personally, I can’t hate him for it. I don’t think it’s an idea of someone’s loved ones being more valuable than another’s loved ones. It’s basically your loved ones are most important to you, same way that a strangers family is most important to them. Ideally it’s best nobody gets hurt but when put in the position where you have to save the person you love, I think Damon’s thinking is understandable. Stefan wasn’t wrong, it’s great that he respects choices and he isn’t lesser but either way in that situation, only one of them was going to get saved.

But there is a difference between: Doing whatever you can to avoid hurting others, trying to look for other ways that not only save the people you love but doesn't cause pain to countless others; and if there is no "other way" than yes you do what you can for your loved one... And straight up disregarding everyone else's safety with little to no concern or consideration for the life of this person or this group of people just to save this one person... And usually in this scenarios with Damon, there is a god amount of innocent people that can fall into collateral damage and he doesn't care; but worse most of the times the people he is willing to sacrifice or hurt in order to save Elena are actually people that are in his circle of friends or people he knows and most definitely are really close to Elena, like Caroline, Bonnie, etc.

This episode could be a completely logical finale for the TV Show. My favorite Stelena. ❤😍 I just don't understand. How could Elena in this episode declare her love for Stefan and kiss Damon in subsequent episodes? It's disgusting. I hate cheating in relationships. Stefan loved, loves and will love Elena. But in this episode, one can already doubt Elena's loyalty. A man who loves his soul mate very much will never kiss his brother. Never. Stefan proved it. Elena is not.
