You are supposed to flour your hands also so that the dough doesn't stick to your hands, also flour the surface on which the raw dough will set upon while in the oven.

The thing is that once other ingredients are added, except for Currants, you no longer have the authentic ISB. The reasoning behind this, is that Ireland did not have Grape Orchards to grow grapes in their country when this bread first came into being. But, there were wild fields of Currants growing everywhere & were free for picking. Wild Currants were used for many of their dishes because the Irish population were dirt poor, & couldn't afford simple spices. They even used them in some of their savory dishes, as they did not have funds for spices. If they had salt they were lucky. My parents were lucky because there was a huge field out back of our two country acres, filled with wild heavily laden Currant bushes of the sweetest berries you can only imagine. Currants were cheaper than Raisins, in those days, so my mother would sprinkle them atop of my Cream of Wheat, Instant Hot Ralston Cereal, or Mother's Quaker Oats. I was told the Currant's were full of Iron which I needed...or, I could eat canned Spinach just like Pop Eye did in the cartoons. So, that was one of my first choices I was ever given as a small child, & that choice was any of the hot cereals with brown sugar. In today's world, Currants are much more expensive than Raisins. Anyway, I'll get off the "C's" & the "R's" subject & say that I don't remember seeing your measures of Flour, BP, salt, & BM for your ISB. You must have forgotten about them, right? So in any event, I am wishing you as a young person successful cooking with a load of learning ahead of you. Good luck, good cooking, & good eating for many years of good dishes that lie ahead. 4/18/'24.

@@ethelnewberry151 My late Mom.may she R.I.P ( who was born many Moons ago in County Kerry) Made White or Plain,Wheat or Wholemeal and Blackcurrant or Raisen Loafs & she always used Butter! (Which some will say is not traditional) but cultures and habits change & evolve for various reasons!

When you start to add butter, eggs & sugar to ISB, you get away from the pure authenticity of this bread, & then it is Americanized. But, it is still very tasty, ESPECIALLY when toasted, & then a thick smear of soft butter & served with a good strong cuppa tea with honey.
