As a singer, I've been working on raising my soft palate. It was happening from time to time, but I didn't seem to really have control to do it when I thought about it. This video is the best I've found to give specific explanation and exercises that actually let you associate the feeling of raising the soft palate with certain exercises, letting me make an association that will prove quite helpful. Thank you for posting this! ,

I agree with Angela (below). This program from Rachel and really helped me make a breakthrough in SINGING this week. Raising the soft palate is integrally tied to the tongue relaxation and jaw relaxation exercise she gives. I realize how much tension I kept in both places. Borrowing from another online teacher, Tricia Leines has expanded on the same topic from a singing perspective: Keeping Your Tongue Relaxed While Lifting Your Soft Palate. Thank you, Rachel.

As a singer, I have become very aware of my soft pallet in singing over the years, but I had never though that it played a big role in my speaking voice. It was actually hard for me to lower my soft pallet because it's so used to being raised when I sing, and my tongue kept trying to come up in the back to make the NG sound lol. I love your videos! You have some great exercises that I will definitely be using in my practice sessions, and on my students as well! Thanks so much!

I appreciate the breakthrough tip! I didn't realize how my soft palette was low until now. You gave me the confirmation that I can keep lifting the soft palette when I speak, except for some nasal sounds. I hope that'll help me sound more natural. Many thanks to dear Rachel and Tom!!! I am new to Rachel's english. Thank you for the video. I watched this video with my headphones(earbud type) . I practiced the sounds with a headphones and for me was easy to feel/hear the differences. I think it was easier to notice the differences between the lifted and lowered soft palate than I noticed without the earbuds, I am not sure if I am right or not, I didn't do it on purpose.

Hi Mike, yes, feeling the soft palate is difficult. Having a raised soft palate (in the closed position) will help you sound less nasal. If I'm just resting, not speaking, the soft palate is lowered. I only know that because if I'm talking and stop, and pay attention to that transition, I feel something lower there. I haven't noticed if it affects the breath...

Hi, Rachel! I strongly think that one of the reasons I can't pronounce the R consonant correctly, maybe due to the fact that maybe I haven't developed a strong tongue. (I don't know if I should focus more on making exercises to make my tongue stronger, since it seems like practicing hasn't paid off at all). Right now at the moment I'm 25 years old, been studying English, since I was 8, I used to surround myself with English all DAY, with music , TV series(and yes, I use to sang like crazy and repeat what I heard in series), I even had a native speaker classmate at highschool for 3 years and used to talk to him a lot every single day(ALL of that 100% got rid of my thick accent, i do have an american accent), but for some reason I fail to pronounce the R correctly on some words. Been practicing for 5 months for 2 hours daily, still can't. I'm giving up, TBH.
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! You might be right! It may have to do with your tongue not being flexible and strong in the specific way needed to create the R sound. i think focusing on tongue exercises is a great idea (if you've seen my relaxation series, it's a good place to start - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3fPcqugdpmSpKM). Here's another resource for you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWfTiYNvZtGXhtE I think that for some students it just takes a while to find and get used to this sound. I think you can get it! But I definitely understand the frustration!

Thank you so much for these video, Rachel. I tried the last exercise, but I am not sure that the soft palate was lifted, it seems like my tongue is lifted to prevent the air go out of the mouth. Could you please, explain this? I see the same on the video.
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! The goal is to bring the palate down and then lift it up again in order to feel the sensation of that movement. When speaking English, we tend to use a lifted soft palate. If the tongue seems slightly lifted in the mouth, that's okay, just make sure when doing the exercise it's the palate that is moving and not the tongue! This can be a challenging exercise - so be patient with yourself!

Hey Rachel, Do you know any ways to unclench or stretch the soft palate muscles? Ever since I've done exercises to raise the soft palate my nasal breathing has become much worse during the day and my sleep has been terrible - it feels like I'm breathing through a straw, I had to switch to mouth-breathing because it's so bad.

0:42 Are you supposed to put pressure on the fingers while doing this or just place it? Cause i do feel something with the N sound. What if you don't have a straw, just do a fish mouth ? For the soft palate the lowering is from the AG or the NG?
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! There is no need to use pressure, just place the fingers there so you can feel the vibration. If you don't have a straw, just pretend to suck in from a straw, you should still feel the same mechanism of the soft palate closing in the back. And the drill at the end is an AH as in FATHER vowel into the NG consonant and then back and forth repeated!
@ZephyrBW

i came here cause i noticed that my nostrils flare A LOT when i sing (practically with every word my nostrils grow and shrink) but isn't raising your soft palate basically the same thing as holding your breath??
@jacqueenofthenight
@jacqueenofthenight 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely not. If your soft pallet is raised, it is a sign that your throat is open and while you may not be breathing in or out, the breath is not being held tightly as you might when you take a breath to go under water. It also means that the vocal folds are open and relaxed and ready to either speak or sing at any given moment.
