What amazes me is that English is not even your native language. Still, you master it so well. I teach English and I sometimes find myself in the situation in which I have to check the way we say certain word, almost every day. The way you explain it is out of this world. Really good job!

English may not be his mother tongue, but there is something he doesn't fully explain, there is something fishy going on in his story. He wants to pretend that he learned English on his own, just by watching movies, videos or exploring online bibliography and other things. But the truth is that English is a language that cannot be learned natively without having been in the United States for quite some time. This is where I think he is lying; to me he was living or at least spending a lot of time in summer camps in the United States to be able to learn English in the way he speaks it.

Great video! I am a native English speaker and I just want to mention that there is a difference in spelling between desert (the very hot, dry sandy place) and dessert (cake & other delights). You did a great job demonstrating the difference in pronunciation but it might help the students to see also that one has two "s"s and the other has only one "s".

The best way to learn English is to learn it phonetically. Whole language doesn't give learners the ability to learn the rules associated with various sounds of a number of letter couplings. As a former kindergarten phonics teacher, the rules are extremely helpful to learn this language. You've done an excellent job explaining the correct pronounciations. Bravo!!!

How can you learn English phonetically when the rules are so inconsistent and illogical? I have never understood this viewpoint.
@lisah.1024
@lisah.1024 8 ай бұрын
@@bilahn1198 Learning the sounds of the letters and alphabet long and short sounds are the foundation. Kids learn the basic rules of the language and once they have a complete understanding, then the irregular rules that produce different phonetic sounds are introduced. I taught 5 year olds who were not able to graduate to grade 1 if they could not read. By the end of the kindergarten school year, the kids were fluent in reading and pronunciation because they learned and understood all the rules.

@Bilahn Phonics is how our children learn to read fluently for a reason. Yes there are exceptions to the rules, but there are also rules for those exceptions. There is literally no better way to learn and understand the building blocks of English. You will never be truly fluent through rote memorization.

@@miriam1812 Hi Miriam! The foundations are the most important in my opinion. To learn the Korean alphabet I recommend the youtube channel "Learn Korean in Korean. Teacher Kim has wonderful, easy-to-understand, short videos. This is the first of them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHfGhaenp9iZosU Moving on, as a general resource, I've found "Talk to me in Korean (TTMIK)" to be one of the best out there. They have a youtube channel and a website with free content. I started with their "Essential Grammar" course which is available for free on their website. It includes the lessons, a pdf of the lesson, and a podcast to hear the author teach the lesson and pronounce all of the Korean words. kzbin.info and talktomeinkorean.com/. When you hit the "sound change rules" rabbit hole, this video from "Go Billy" will serve you well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJOyiJWohdSKZpI. And finally, most enjoyably, watch a lot of K-dramas!! They are lots of fun and will expose you the most to the language. You'd be surprised at how much information will sink into your brain just by watching and listening. The website "Viki" has a lot of free Korean television shows and movies with subtitles in different languages. I hope you enjoy. www.viki.com/ Good luck!!

I want to add something to the "desert vs dessert" section. There is an instance when "desert" has the stress on the second syllable. That's when it's the noun meaning "what someone deserves." The whole desert/dessert thing has lead to amusing, yet annoying mistakes in many an online article. It's pretty common to see reviewers writing about villains getting their "just desserts." It's pretty clear that the writer has heard the phrase uttered and assumed, because of the pronunciation, that the spelling is as shown. This has caused me to imagine the villain being force-fed German chocolate cake, tiramisu, key lime pie, and other confections. The proper spelling is, of course, "just deserts."

Um. The word youre looking for is "deserVE'. We don't say "John deserts it." It's "John deserves it." But if John intentionally leaves something behind that he didn't have to, then we say "John deserted his car." And if by deserting his car means he was stuck in the hottest place on earth with zero rain, he'd be stuck in the desert after deserting his car - and he deserved/deserves it for acting so dumb. No dessert for him, and he could have gotten his favorite dessert - apple pie." (Annnnnnd now I've written and read the word "desert" so many times that it now doesn't look like a real word. 😂 I hate when that happens). ALSO, you now have me utterly fiending for German Chocolate Cake and I'm mad because I don't have any. Got a fork. Don't have cake 😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Great video, I love the way you explained this, and yes there some of your listed words that I was pronouncing wrongly: colonel 😂. English rules r very inconsistent, as u said, however; for some reason native speakers seem not to be aware of it because they have no empathy for the hard work and continous effort we put into it.

Oh no! Many of us have great sympathy for your efforts to learn to speak English! It is filled with ridiculous exceptions to rules. And we are also envious of your ability to speak 3-5 languages before age 25! So envious!

I don't really use the word 'colonel' or come across while reading or watching anything. But I think I would mispronounce it if given a chance to speak using this word. Thank you for your lesson! (Other words are obvious to me when it comes to pronunciation 😉)

I could totally relate to the miss-pronouncing! Normally, pronouncing problems would happen when you're from a different culture, even though, I'm from Chinese, my friend says she understands me very well. Most of the time, Spanish people have problems with English, cause of their accent. I have to say, this video is impressive! ✨

What are u talking about? If you can see this guy is from Italy and he speaks great English.For sure you know that Italian and Spanish languges have many similar sounds, on the other hand, it is difficult for me to understand chinese people. Well that is not the point, I am from Mexico, Therefore students as us should try to push ourselves to get a better English, videos like this help us a lot.

@@marthaescalante3551 Yes, You're totally right! People are very different, Although, if you speak your own language most of the time, you would sound more like your culture, If people practice English a lot, they'll still sound like their own culture, but, their English wouldn't be that bad. I don't speak much Chinese, but a lot more English, so I am used to speaking English and practicing English.

I’m struggling to find the video that I commented on earlier, so I’m just going to post a follow up here. I have been thinking about how you pointed out two different pronunciations of the word the. I had thought that I always said it the same way, and that most Americans did, but now I am realizing that you’re right! I do sometimes pronounce the word differently before a word starting with a vowel especially before an a. If it were not my native language, I never could learn English. You’re a wonderful teacher.

Hi, Antonio. I simply love yr videos. They´ve just confirmed what I heard in terms of good pronunciation. It just pierces my ears, though, when I hear you start "the reason is ... and I expect you to say "that" and then you wind up saying, "because". I know many native speakers use 'the reason is because', but, according to my TOEFL classes, this is a case of substandard English, ain´t it so?! Keep up the work, pls.

Ab-so-lute-ly spot on!! Will definitely share and show this video when a "conflict" arises!! 😂 So many people don't recognize how difficult English truly is! To complicate matters, there are differences between the Canadian vs the American prounciation of some words: advertisement and lieutenant come immediately to mind! Regardless of the "acceptance" of both, it is a pet peeve of mine and have caused some heated discussions, when I won't back down!!😂

Excellent video!!! ‘Colonal’ is definitely a crazy one. A word I’ve wondered about is, ‘valet.’ It’s not a French word but most people tend to want to French it up anyway, pronouncing it either VAL-ay or val-AY. I’m a native American (but not a Native American 😉) and I had always pronounced it ‘Val-AY.’ But a few years ago I learned even dictionaries are not in agreement. Some say it rhymes with ‘mallet,’ while others insist it is pronounced VAL-āy. Some say it depends on whether it’s used as a noun, or as a verb. Apparently either way is acceptable. Ever since learning this I’ve irritated my friends and family by drawing a point to the controversy, by deliberately mispronouncing various other words ending in ‘et.’ The words, wallet, mallet, pocket, facet… and even alphabet, I’ve ‘Frenchized’ to, wal-AY, mal-AY, pock-AY, fass-AY and al-fa-BAY. It’s kinda fun but it’s become an addiction, I tell ya! 😂

But "colonial" is nothing like "colonel". "Lieutenant" American is different from the English pronunciation. It goes on an on. I pity those studying English as a second language. Hey, wait a minute I was born in Italy, became an American citizen at the age of 17 and am fascinated by English and its literature. I must be masochistic.
