This is my first time setting up 54 mm cruiser wheels. I do some slide tests and skate around with them. There is not a lot of great skating in here because you can't do a lot with soft wheels.

I recently changed from Bones STF 52mm's 103a to OJ/Creature Bloodsuckers 54mm 97a and noticed a drastic difference. On top of new bearings I was skating sidewalks and rough concrete like butter, normally my board would slow or I would have to pick it up all the time because the ground was too rough. This slight tweak in softness was perfect for me because I use my skateboard as transportation as well as street, park and freestyle. Bones skate so long and I've never had a flatspot but the 54's are a must for safe primo/primoslides for any of those rademaker or mullen fans. I'm humbled to see the results of these new wheels on an indoor park :) Thanks for the video ben!

92a wheels were fairly popular in the mid-late 1980s. In fact, it was pretty common that a wheel under 95a was considered a “street” wheel, and wheels harder than 95a more of ramp/vertical skateboarder’s wheel. There was also less height variation in wheels back then, and a trick like a crooked grind wasn’t even done

I remember skating 92a's back in the early 90's. Not sure when wheels got so crazy hard. Anything harder than 95a really is too hard for most street spots IMO. Where hard wheels really shine is concrete skateparks.
@PHeMoX2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it seems people got this backwards a bit. The super hard wheels are indeed a pretty modern invention, not something 'old'. Then again people still pretend 'everyone' skated tiny wheels in the early 90s, which is just plain false. During vert skating's most popular years, people definitely skated larger wheels if anything. Hardly anybody skated tiny wheels and the benefit for tech skating is actually fairly negligible. Anyway, for me 95a wheels are pretty much in the sweetspot zone for what I skate here. It's hard enough to work well in a modern skatepark and it can deal with rough streets. The Ricta Clouds 92a can powerslide. The Mini Logo 95a wheels can powerslide just fine, great even, with lots of control. In fact, I would argue given enough effort put in, anything above roughly 90a will slide. If you don't want to get stuck in nose slides, go with 95a / 97a or harder wheels though. When it comes to hill bombing, people powerslide super big very soft wheels anyway, so it's not quite impossible at all. People also underestimate the importance of wheel _size_ when it comes to riding faster or have less friction / terrain impact problems. It's possible to skate like a Spitfire Formula Four Conical Full in like 56mm and 101a hardness on very rough ground just fine, but it's mostly due to the larger and wider size. Not the hardness. They will vibrate like crazy. A 90a 52mm wheel that only has a narrow contact surface most likely will literally feel less comfortable though, as any of the larger cracks will make a harsh impact. It doesn't matter if it's 90a when a wheel is small and narrow. I would also argue a 52mm will _always_ be slower than literally any bigger wheel, regardless of durometer. There actually is no 'sticking to the ground' with a soft wheel in terms of speed. People are heavy enough to push way through that friction threshold. Heck, some of the softer wheels will be faster than pretty much anything else in the same size range (like Bones Rough Riders). Fun fact; given enough acceleration, a softer wheel in a slick skatepark will actually be a faster wheel than a super hard wheel. Do people realise formula 1 wheels are softer than average for the purpose of higher grip and faster speed? People who think hard wheels are the fastest wheel are mostly just mislead by the sound and feeling of what it is like skating them. But I digress.

BUT I've already found that anything under 90 is just to soft for my taste. He was riding 54mm 99a spitires f4's and honestly it was making skating not very enjoyable I could tell it was bumming him out. We decided to order some Mini logos hybrids 55mm 90a and they are perfect for learning I highly recommend them. I bought ricta78a 56 mm for my new board and I now regret that purchase but they are fun for just cruising around but way to sticky. There is zero give for nocomplys and shuvits it really sucks. I think I'm going to buy their Ricta Chrome core 92a 56 MM cause the core gives a more firm foundation and yet still a bit forgiving ride. We are only skating street right now so he can learn without feeling weird at the parks but the 90's instantly changed his confidence I could see his push and overall balance was way better. This new school kid commented, "Your seat is too high to find the balance point". The problem with that comment is - Hang Fives were INVENTED by guys riding high seats. I see this as the same thing. The stability on my backside crooked grinds felt really good and locked in. My only downside to the small wheels is that it feels like you are pushing through mud sometimes haha. I'm gonna stick with this setup. I really love it
@bendegros6 жыл бұрын
Venture lows are stable but part of that is because they are low and don't turn much. They were a favourite truck of mine for years but I don't like them on decks above 7.8. They get pretty wheelbitey.
@mightymike1306 жыл бұрын
Ben Degros yea I feel you on the wheel bite. That's why I'm on 48mm wheels with bones hardcore hard bushings. Also riding a 8.0. I couldn't ride these trucks with anything bigger than 49mm wheels probably

I have these Alchemy street shaped longboard co. wheels that are 54mm and 90a. Amazingly fast and still street skateable. The pros and cons are there as you said, just faster urethane than SML wheels I bet. They're called the Helios, but hard to get now.

Yeah, 95 was considered pretty damn hard. 99 and you were skating stone wheels.

Great video! I've always ridden 95a but recently switched to bones stf. Missing the cushy ride on the rough pavement but the harder wheels are much better in the park and more technical stuff!

spit fire makes some great soft wheels. and the oj key frames are sick. that is my preferred wheel actually when i film. 87a is a great duro

Hi, I’m a beginner skater, I bought a board but got 92a wheels, will I still be able to learn tricks?
@nachojimenez24204 жыл бұрын
Yes. 92a is not that soft to begin with. You will be able to do everything and wonder what all the fuss is about. Don't believe the hype. 92A ricta clouds are GREAT wheels.

Nice review. I feel like 98a is a great middle ground between slide and cruise. Satori make a great 98a. I also saw some SML 97a wheels on sale of their website that might be worth a look. Keep shredding Ben!

92a wheels are fun if you live in old cities with bad sidewalks cause they allow you to skate...compared to my 58mm 101a is like riding on butter. They can slide too, you just have to do it differently. With whells kind 80 and 78a, it's a different story.

@B_Chanslor6 жыл бұрын
I put some softer wheels on a setup I use for ditch skating, they roll a lot smoother than normal hard wheels. I'm not sure how long they would last in street skating however as mentioned Nick Boserio and I think Willis Kimbel and Ben Raybourne ride soft wheels from time to time.

Haha... the Neighbours... that's the reason, im now riding on 56mm 80A. ;) (I was punished to death, riding 54mm 99A at 0400am. XD) But im not able to do anithing whats not perfectly straightend.. In Relation to the riding direction. But... it's a pleasure to ride them.
@Dodgerambo1006 жыл бұрын
im still riding them.. but now im quite compfy on the deck, and im able to ride in nearly all conditions. (its get more easy to ride, if you no Need to think about, exept of trusting your abilitys.) ;) i have 56mm 90a´s too, but they are way slower cause of the wide contactarea.

My friend gave me a politic deck cause he didn’t like it. I skated it with Indy’s first and it felt really heavy with not much pop. Then I switched to Thunders and it felt a lot lighter with increased pop. It does seem to have a small tail, huge nose and big wheelbase.
@bendegros6 жыл бұрын
I tried this one with thunders too. Still sucked. It's almost not even good enough for a cruiser deck! I think maybe this was just a dud deck. The angle of the tail was different than the nose which is rare.

ive had some 78a smls and they slid pretty well for the duro, and in my experience with a little wax they slide fine on ledges. The only downfall is weight, flatground tricks, and drops.
