This is really a Trini/Guyanese Roti. None of my East Indian friends who are not from the Caribbean know about dalpouri Roti. It is definitely the Queen of Rotis!
@ibisem74702 жыл бұрын
What's the region of India? There are so many types of roti and techniques in India, South East Asia, the Caribbean, etc. and some of the ingredients vary. Roti canai in Malaysia/Singapore for example is more of a laminated dough process. This roti recipe is Trini - and even the Jamaican roti slightly differs from it. Type in the region of India and add 'roti" and you should find the one closest to what you tried. But the Trini version is amazing too - just different. Good luck!
@sewbeautiful21742 жыл бұрын
This is just a trini variation of a combination of stuffed paratha and bedmi roti . Usually it’s completely cooked and a binding chickpea flour is added . Bu5 when the first Indian came to trini they adapted to use what was available . The corn mill method is the trini adaptation. These originally were made like stuffed pooris and eaten with potato / aloo curry . These have been adapted to stuffed parathas. This version is not made typically in India but is uniquely trini. Great recipe and quite healthy . Use ghee instead of oil and it will taste even better .

Ria I am a retired Field Engineer having worked in the Petrochemical Industry for over 42 years, during which time I did a lot of overseas traveling, I came to the US in May of 1970 . In those days there was NO West Indian Indian restaurant or West Indian places to eat . I truly missed my West Indian foods such as Baigan Chokha, Tomatoe Chokha, Zaboka Chokha, Curry aloo, Saigan, Same and Aloo, Bodi and aloo, and of course Sadaa Roti and Dhall Purie with curry Aloo. Dasheen Bhaji with Dhall and rice and chourai bhaji with Sadaa Roti. I lived on Sardine and Crackers for a long time something which I love. It was cheap and I had limited money to spend while studying. It was tough ! Now that I am retired I truly enjoy watching your shows and learning to cook. I love your Tomato Chokha with Sadaa roti just like my mother and nane use to make. I love your presentation , its highly professional and most important you are a very simple girl . Ria could you please do a segment on roast coconut chokha with bandhani with dhall and rice. I have eaten in some very expensive and high class restaurants on companies expense, and I am fed up of meat. I am trying to live a vegetarian life or a healthier life style. (Organic ) I still take a little thing on the side which my wife detest, but what the hell I intend to enjoy my live what ever is left. KJSINGH whose ancestors came from Bejuical.

First, thank you for the upload. Dalpuri (with Kuucha or grated mango pickle) is still a very popular breakfast dish in Bihar, India. When the people from the state migrated (taken by the British!) to the Carribean (and Fiji, Mauritius!) they took their food habits and the recipe with them. The only difference being we use Channa dal filling (dehusked and split brown/red chickpeas). Understandably since Channa dal is found/grown in the Indian sub-continent they, ingeniously, used the next close thing- split yellow peas. The way your mother-in-law filled and balled the dough is exactly how my mother did it (I still struggle with it- my filling always 'oozes' out in multiple places when I roll my dal-filled dough ball!) Alternatively, for the filling part (the most tricky step!) one can roll out two-thin-equal- in-diameter-tawa-sized 'rotis' : spread the filling evenly on one, drop the second 'roti' on the top, and pinch the edges shut (The Jugaad technique).

Smile With Poonam Dearest Poonam, Thanks for sharing that info! Very interesting to learn about the variations and similarities around the world. The jackfruit you refer to is called chaitaigne (pronounced Sha-Tyne) in Trinidad. It is simmered with coconut milk and simple seasonings and very tasty! We enjoy it at weddings and prayers along with a variety of other dishes, however paratha is usually the roti of choice used to scoop it up with! Also instead of cooking in small chunks we release the layers which I imagine come apart anyway during cooking? You have made me hungry for curry! 😘❤️👍

Sorry, I lost the will to live watching this ! One could die of hunger with the time it takes. I’ll just stick to chapati flour and water !!

Curries With Bumbi Hi. I read that it’s not the same. You need yellow split peas.

It’s called dahlbhari roti in Fiji. Your technique for filling the Dahl in the aata is perfect!

Brought back childhood memories of attending a fair and eating dahlpuri in Kathmandu. Strangely I never connected the dahl+puri to realize it was made with dal. Will try it tomorrow, thank you! Interesting to see you fill the wrapper as if it was a dumpling or momo :-) Your mother-in-law definitely has a distinct technique involving three fingers and almost a clapping motion.

❤TYVM. I learned to make from a Caribbean Auntie. The filling. I was buying the Dhalpuri from the market. Went there a month ago and shot up. $27 for 12.

Hi, that looks absolutely yummy. Daal puri/paratha is a festival staple here in India. The daal puri is the deep fried version. We use Chana daal, as in your recipe and usually a dough of whole wheat flour. Your filling was just right, though you thought you were not happy with it. Daal ground in a food processor will be a bit gooey but while you cook it with the tempering on low heat, it becomes just right. Earlier when we were young the cooked daal used to be ground on a flat grinding stone, hence grainier. I still have one of those and use occasionally. Now we all just dry it out in a non-stick wok till it comes to the required texture. ❤
