Great video. I generally think instructional videos are better when they are narrated in post production.

Great video Matt! These swing transformation videos that explain your coaching approach, issue analysis, and drills are a great resource that help me learn how to be a better coach. I watch all your videos but videos like these are my favorite for learning how to diagnose and help a player make adjustments.

You did and amazing job with her. Looks so much better. Nice and balanced and that swing path is improved dramatically. Appears to be the type that will work her rear end off to continue to improve upon this, along with your tutelage. Definitely has some great athletic genes. Dad with a nice tenure in the NHL and currently the coach of the Capitals.

Must players swing to the left of their body in stead of inside and through the ball like you explained here, thank you for all you do in the baseball community!!!

I *THINK* the two big things I see are #1 at front leg block there is cessation of forward movement and the initiation of tilt and rotation of the trunk and shoulders... Head is perfectly still and body rotates as soon as front foot strike. Just like Trout... versus head and body collapsing forward for a couple frames after front foot strike. #2 Interestingly... you've synced the before and after side by side comparison at initial bat forward movement...that's so awesome! In the earlier swing her left leg has almost completed it's internal rotation already by initial forward bat movement and her heel has disconnected from the ground! Man.... there is so much correlation I see with how high level pitching is described and hitting... You guys are great for posting these videos and explaining whats going on!! I think I would cue her to avoid thinking about collapsing that back side but instead driving it forward against a stiff right leg to create rotational speed and power. Her swing looks very Bryce Harper...

Great job explaining how and why these particular drills help with dialing in the problem this player had with cutting across the ball, this is one of the biggest issues I’ve seen with most players both in baseball and softball; a follow up video would be interesting to see how this player has been buying in and how she feels about her change

Nice explanation and video! My 11 year old son is doing the same movements-getting on front side too early and creating a wide casting movement with his arms. You mentioned using 5 or 6 drills. Could you list those drills below so I can search your videos by drills please? Also, how are you delivering the balls-coach pitch, pitching machine? How would you recommend with an 11 year old? Thanks so much for your great content and taking the time to reply!

@Antonelli Baseball I initially watched this video because I think left to right and your thumbnail had what I thought was the better swing on the left (or in my thinking the before swing) and the one on the right was weaker, but then I watched and that's just the way you positioned them. You might want to put "before" and "after" above the corrected swing and the weaker swing. :)

My daughter almost has the same exact swing. How do I fix that? I asked if she can tell that she's doing that and she said she can't feel. She doesn't know how to transfer her practice swings into game time swings. What can I do to help her understand the swing better?

What are your thoughts on making these types of changes during the season verses leaving the swing as is until the end of the season?

Depends how bad the hitter is struggling. No since in waiting if the swing isn’t working. If the hitter is doing ok then they can wait if they want

The most obvious change to me is how much better she's firming up her front side/leg, old swing her front knee is soft which is why her weight keeps moving forward and her upper body is straight up and down, new swing front leg straightens nicely and everything falls into place, bat angle better, attack angle better, stays behind the ball, hands/barrel moving up through the ball, looks great.

Any idea if this girl was turned around to the left side? (Natural Righty) we fight a front side dominant pull out with my girl who was converted. Gets better at times and then it always creeps back in her swing.

Nice vid. I agree: the batter in the video is pulling the bat through the zone evidenced by grounding out and/or weak pop ups. The pull is everywhere. I disagree that the cause is shifting forward and/or swinging “down” as suggested. I also disagree that the cause could be staying on the back leg and/or swinging up. I believe the cause of pulling is mostly attributed to the batter not being connected: the elbow/upper body gets ahead of the hips. I see this in my 11 year old. Where tension goes energy flows. If the upper body is not “connected” to the lower body, the tension is upper body with energy across the lower body and with it the hands. Pull city: the bat cuts across the zone at a unfavorable angle. A connected swing uses the whole body to turn the knob of the bat to the ball: the top hand elbow is tucked in, anchored to the side, while the whole body turns the knob to the ball. At extension, the top hand (palm up) pushes the bat straight out- not across. The latter creates a cascade of levers, the wrist being the last of them. The product of this clockwork is efficient rotational acceleration marked by a whip. If the timing is right, the batter is long in the zone and squares the barrel to the path of the ball. When done correctly, the swing looks effortless and resulting impact with the ball looks and sounds pure. The latter can be accomplished whether the batter shifts forward/down (traditional) or on back leg/up (newer). A video showing the cascade of levers described above- without focus on whether the batter swings up or down- would be a great benefit to young players. MLB players are very good at creating this lever system which ends at the wrists. Getting rid of a pull is key. It takes a ton of tee work to get the feel.

I always assumed many SB players had a different bat path (appears chopping) because the angle of the pitch is flatter with ball going horizontal to the ground or rising even, vs a baseball coming from high mound and high release point to low. Granted I know nothing about SB :)
@AntonelliBaseball2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s what most assume, but watching the top players in the country, they have a positive attack angle just like baseball players

Great transformation. I'm frankly shocked she's a D1 player with those mechanics. She still has some pretty bad drag she needs to fix - in my experience, draggy players tend to jump or lunge forward because they are often late

There's D1 and then there's D1. In other words, what you see on TV and what you see with programs with big enough football programs to bring the whole athletic program into D1 can vary widely on their other sports. I coached at the world university games in 2001 at U of Providence and the high school players I was coaching in California were better than their college players.
