Winter Camping on a Budget: Coleman 0° Sleeping Bag Review

Winter camping is a pleasure, and sleeping warmly is a key element of being able to enjoy the experience. Looking for a cold weather sleeping bag can be a bit of a shock if you're on a tight budget, so when I found this 0°-rated sleeping bag for just $40, it seemed worth a try. Here are my impressions after using this for a year.

To be clear, I've had it for a year now, but I didn't use it for summer camping...I used my old lighter-weight sleeping bag for when the weather was warmer. But anytime being cold was a possibility (fall, winter and spring) this bag has been my go-to.

I bought one of those recently and have no complaints maybe because I am 5’8” and I can comfortably sleep on my side and read my kindle turning the pages with my very warm hands (even without gloves in very low temps)that I can keep inside the bag with my tablet. I also must tell you that I started following your adventures last summer because you drive a Forester as do I. I even had a bed built for the back of it like yours, but I prefer to sleep in my Tipi tent. I am a 74 year old mountaineer in WV who only started camping in August of 2019, and your videos had a lot to do with that decision. Thank you!

I have this one literally, i live out of my car and i never have to turn my car on for heat it’s great.... for movement don’t try and move in the sleeping bag move with it like when you are on your side turn the bag with you, bend your knees with the bag not in it helps me a lot! This was the best review of six that I watched on this Coleman sleeping bag...your review has convinced me to pull the trigger on buying it, now on my "save for later" Amazon list. The price is $43 and that's amazing for a bag of this quality! I already store a 35 degree Farland bag in my Jeep but will add this Coleman for those extra freezing temperatures. Like you, I sleep in the back of my SUV on a Teton base camp pad in the winter months. In warmer weather I 'm in a Coleman 2-man tent or in a KampRite tent cot. I'm old school and have been using Coleman products for years along with my military gear. Sadly, my Coleman Peak One stove "died" after 35 years of intensive use. I have two Coleman single burner stoves, one black and one blue. I use two stoves to separate the methods of cooking, i.e. clean (boiling water) and splatter cooking (frying). BTW I love your adventures...used to live in Southern California and in Arizona. Camping in the Southwest is an amazing experience.

We have a Teton sports zero degree duo sleeping bag . It’s super bulky, but it does a great job of keeping us warm for a fair price. The heavy synthetic sleeping bags are perfect for car camping 👍👍

For sure! I don't have any intention of becoming a serious backcountry hiker where I'll need to schlepp all my camping gear on my back for miles. I'll have to check out the Teton bags - I wouldn't mind getting a roomier zero-degree bag for myself and just using the mummy bag when one of the kids wants to join on a winter trip. Either of them will be perfectly fine in that. :-)

I have been a gear snob since my mountaineering days in my twenties. I am now 54. I still own my $500/$250 gortex down Marmot, and old school North Face (when they made good gear) ....but now I am LARGER! Lol. I found one of these Coleman bags at a Goodwill while working out of town. The build quality and construction is TOP rate! It's hard for me to believe Coleman can pull this off for such a price point. I have slept at -28 air temps....I know good stuff when I see it. Price for mine ? $4.99. LOVE, LOVE it. I did get a 15% discount (unsolicited for "senior " ) on top of that!

That's awesome! I feel like Coleman is perhaps looked down upon by certain segments of the "overlanding" population, but I have had nothing but good experiences and good prices with Coleman gear, and the stuff just lasts. I have Coleman items I've been using for well over 20 years.

I purchased a more expensive and roomier 0° bag this fall because I didn't want to keep squeezing into the mummy bag and wanted a second warm bag if one of my kids comes along, but my perception is that I do not stay as warm and comfortable in the new one which cost more than twice as much. I've had to put an extra blanket over it most nights so far. I was also thinking about doing a comparison video, heh. :-) Bottom line though, the Coleman is an outstanding value, for sure.

I agree with the larger rectangle bags losing more heat. Larger spaces take more heat to warm up. The opening is larger and less baffled. I still prefer rectangle or quilt. I put some extra clothes in the footbox to fill a little airspace, and sometimes something as a baffle near the chest and neck. Just like a scarf can do for a jacket, It gets a lot warmer if you can close the top well. I made my own bivy/ bag, and its rectangle. However the top is not completely open and seals up.

I accidentally bought 2 of these on an Amazon order (I meant to order just one), and I'm so happy with it that I've decided to keep the second one. Just sayin', it's pretty nice! Also, it's possible to get it back in the stuff sack (although it's a bit of a chore), but you have to pull up on the flap on the inside of the sack as you're pulling the tightly rolled up sleeping bag into it. You have to wrestle it a bit, but it works!

I have the very same bag and love it! I've used it sleeping in the back of my Jeep Compass on a Teton base camp mat and in a tent cot. The coldest temperature so far with my use was 31 fahrenheit and I was cozy warm. My issue is that being claustrophobic I use my sleeping bag like a top quilt, just create a foot box and pull the bag up around me and tuck it in as best as possible. I do keep a woobie, Snugpak jungle blanket or an alpaca blanket next to me just in case. I do have a couple of duck down sleeping bags and they're okay for backpacking but if I'm car camping I prefer the Coleman and I think it has to do with its weight on my body. Probably a psychological thing but it works for me. Like you I just may buy another one before the price goes up. As more and more people buy this it'll jack the price upwards.

As it happens, being weary of feeling like some kind of squirming larva wrapped in my Coleman mummy bag, I did purchase a different 0° sleeping bag prior to my recent winter high desert trip (I wanted a second one anyway so I would be able to take one of my kids along on a cold camping trip at some point). The bag I got - which was considerably more expensive than the Coleman - is much roomier, which was wonderful, but it turned out to have its own set of downsides. I'll talk more about that in a review/comparison video which I will try to squeeze in at some point soon. Ultimate conclusion: the Coleman 0° bag remains a fantastic value if you can cope with being mummified. :-)

Thanks for sharing! I'm sure being inside the car helps too. I want to go winter car camping some time. Just to go explore a trail or something. I figured I'd bring my husky with me and sleep in the back with her. I'm sure a bag like this and the warmth of the dog will help. Wish I could have a coat like hers though in winter. For sure, while it gets down to pretty much the ambient outdoor temperature inside, I am definitely protected from drafts and the coldness of the ground. Sleeping atop 5" of foam doesn't hurt either. I realize now I probably should have done an outdoor test in the tent cot before assembling this video. I think I still will give that a shot at some point and see how it fares. A big warm dog would certainly help a lot too! Thanks for watching!

Bought one a week ago and I really like it. I have been able to get it back into the bag but it is very tough and takes time. Because I am thin, I had no real problem changing position in the bag but I can see how a larger person would. I have wanted a mummy bag since I was a kid and it didn't disappoint. It was well worth the money!

FIRST! I have a similar cheap bag for winter. Same struggles, it is very hard to move around in. It works with backpacking but not perfect. I would get something more packable next time. Always good to start cheap and upgrade when you really need to.

The weekend of 12/20 me and my friend went camping at Green Ridge State Forest in MD. It was 18F overnight and my $40 20 degess mummy bag did keep me alive. However I was cold to the bone. We were in a 3 season ground tent and the little buddy heater stopped working. All was not lost, the night we stayed at Rocky Gap Casino which was about 12 miles away and it was 70F in the room. Next cold camping trip will be in some type of small camper. I really enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing.

Really not bad for a cheap mummy bag. I had a high quality mummy bag years ago that I used for tent camping in the snow yet very confined it definitely helped keep me warm. Not sure where it ended up so I might look into something similar to this one. If it wasn't so much rain right now I'd take the car out and go camping lol

Since youre out camping with a car, I would always suggest synthetic fibre sleepingbags: You dont have an inner/outer tent, ventilation isnt good, so your sleeping bag might get moist. Synthetic fibre doesnt care, down does lose its insulation capabilities and you will freeze. The positive thing for down is its weight and packing space, so it is good for hiking. But as said, youre in a car so it doesnt matter if the bag is slightly bigger and weights a bit more. Also, does your daughter know that secret about you? I swear, the first video of you I saw, I was like "he will start singing right about now". I didnt know James Mercer (Lead singer of The Shins) is into softroading with his Forester. Better dont let your Daughter know, or else you will be forced to sing non stop on your trips.

Haha, my daughter gets seriously annoyed if I sing or even hum. A lead singer I am not. :-) I've been compared to a few different celebs (most frequently Edward Norton) but James Mercer is a new one. :-) That's a great point about the synthetic fiber and condensation moisture...I didn't even know that could be an issue with down. I love down bags, but they’re not great in humid climates. I have a few fiber bags, and they’re ok for the most part. By far, the most important thing with *any* sleeping bag is to use a good pad/mattress that provides adequate insulation from the cold ground. Very good point about the temp rating! I slept on a thick air mattress in a ground tent in my REI 0F rated sleeping bag in the Sierras in September, and because I got cold from underneath, it was a pretty miserable night. I don’t think a bag rated for colder temps would have made much difference. A lot of people swear by putting a reflective mylar sheet between the ground and the mattress. I’ll definitely try that next time.

That's a great point about cold from underneath, and the difference insulating below can make. A few months ago when I took Lucie camping, I gave her the 0°F bag which she slept with in the car, and I used an old 30°F bag in the tent cot. It got down to around 30°F that night. With air circulating underneath me there was good potential for cold from below, but I put down a later of foam in the tent cot and was *perfectly* warm from underneath, BUT utterly freezing from sides and above. I even unrolled an entire extra 30° sleeping bag over the top of me, but still shivered through the night. Maybe next time I should also put a layer of foam on top of me, LOL. Anyway, my cheap Coleman 0° bag clearly gets an assist from the fact that I sleep not only in my car, but on top of 5 inches of foam. Absolutely no cold hitting me from below. :-)

Down won't keep you warm if it's wet. Does that sleeping bag have a little zipper in the back of the hood for a pillow? My 25 degree Coleman mummybag does and this looks exactly like that one just different colors. I love it. I'm looking for another one but this is the only one I can find.

For sure, I *much* prefer sleeping in my rectangular 30° cotton sleeping bag I've had for decades (also Coleman actually now that I think about it). Admittedly when I bought this, I was in a hurry because I had a last-minute opportunity to go winter camping for the first time ever, so I hit Amazon and searched zero degree bags. After being stunned by the prices, I was relieved to stumble onto this one and went for it, without really considering that the mummy form would be so constrictive. Ultimately I'm *very* satisfied with the value I received with this one, but I wish I had taken the time to delve into a little more research on sleeping warmly while winter camping. Might have come up with a different solution that would be a little more comfortable. I'll probably pursue this further, maybe for next winter. It won't hurt to acquire a second warm bag, because currently I can't bring a kid along for winter camping. Either of my kids will be perfectly fine in the mummy bag while I sleep in whatever new, roomier solution I come up with. :-)

Thanks for the review! Coleman for me, has always hit that “sweet spot” of the BEST of the cheap...which for me, has been good enough. Sure I’d love a mountain hardware, Marmot, or Northface bag -but can’t justify the price when I’m not really using it for backpacking. With car camping, you have the luxury of additional blankets, tent heater, etc

Indeed, I didn't specifically state that but hopefully it's abundantly clear in this video. :-) It does seem to get down to nearly the same temperature inside the car as outside, but being fully protected from any kind of air movement definitely makes a difference. I may give it a try in the cold but sleeping in the tent cot my son uses when he comes along, for more of an outdoor experience in this sleeping bag. I'm going camping in the Redwoods, California in January. its predicted to be 45 fahrenheit at night. I now no long think I would still be cold, but i guess my question now is: Is it overkill?

For a 45° night (especially a damp one in the forest) I personally would opt for my 0° sleeping bag and not my "summer" bag (which is a 30° bag and useless for keeping warm). Temperatures can always drop below what is forecast, one can always sleep with less clothing on, the bag open, or just over the top as a blanket if truly too warm. Every time I underestimate how much warmth I need, I regret it and sleep poorly shivering through the night, heh. :-)

It depends on how cold it is. I usually start out wearing a sweatshirt and sweat pants, and if it's not excessively cold I may shed some of that during the night. If it's down in the teens or lower I might be inclined to go to bed with long underwear plus the sweatshirt & sweatpants just to be safe. Always easier to shed a layer if I end up too warm rather than wake up chilled and need to add something.

I have a 25 degrees Fahrenheit Coleman and it got down to the single digits last night. I slept with all my clothes on minus coat and boots and it kept me warm. When I woke up my water was frozen solid and I was nice and warm minis my face. I usually throw a Afghan blanket my mom made me over my head to keep my face warm. I can breathe and it keeps me warm. I don't know if you consider that cheating or not. But I had my sleeping bag for 3 years now and I love it. I can't believe you got that sleeping bag for 40 bucks. What a good deal! They are selling for $80 now. I'm going to buy this one. Hopefully it's as nice as my other.

Believe me, I hear you. I had already decided I wasn't going to do another winter in this bag and have just purchased another (large rectangular, not mummy) 0° sleeping bag. I'll be testing it out on a high desert trip soon that should see some pretty cold nighttime temperatures.

Does this bag have YKK zippers? I just received the Snugpak zero degree bag (which is twice the price as this one) and I'm really disappointed they put tiny zippers on it and they're almost impossible to get back together if they come apart... in room temperature weather. In weather where you'd need a zero degree bag? Forget about it. This one's going back to Amazon, so I'm looking for another bag.

Unfortunately I have this bag stored in another location and can't look at the zipper at the moment...I don't recall if it's YKK or not. Never had any issue with it though, aside from needing to take care to not snag the adjacent material in the zipper. It's a solid, heavy-duty zipper. Even the zippers on the old Coleman 30° bags I use in summer (which I've had for 25 years) still work just fine.

I got my wife this exact bag. However every time I've taken her out in the cold, we had our Portable Buddy heater. She has yet to need to zip up in this sleeping bag. I have figured out how to restuff it though. Most of the time we double over a bag before stuffing. Not this one. Roll it up flat, that will have it skinny enough to fit half way into the bag. Once I've got it half way in, I stand it up and start to use my upper body weight to smash the rest down into the bag. I've done this twice now with success.

I had to look up my Amazon order, and yes, I'm stunned to say, it is indeed labeled *"Coleman 0°F Mummy Sleeping Bag for Big and Tall Adults | North Rim Cold-Weather Sleeping Bag."* Wow. If this is "big and tall," I would not want to see the "normal" version, yikes. I can't remember if I said in this video, but I'm just 5'9" and ~160 lbs. I wouldn't call that being a party pooper my friend! That bag sounds awesome to me. I enjoy sleeping in cold rooms or the cold outdoors, but I want to be super toasty warm in my bed when I do!

How do you make out with condensation ? Do you use a source of heat?

Once or twice I've run the car for a few minutes before bed just to take the chill off, but no heat during the night ever. I keep two or three windows cracked open when I sleep. Most of the time I'm cold camping, I'm off in the desert side of Oregon and get almost no condensation just because the air is so dry. Up the mountains I'll get condensation on the windows only but not on anything else.

LOL...between the bag itself and my coffin-like sleeping space, it's a touch claustrophic. On winter nights the cold tends to overpower the claustrophobia however. :-)

I was with you guys. Then my uncle, who is a climber, let me know I was going about it all wrong. Don't try to keep the bag still while you adjust inside. If you want to sleep on your side, roll to your side and take the whole bag with you. Bend your knees and take the whole bag with you.

If your a woman or a small guy this would be a fantastic bag but if your over 6ft 200lbs don't waste your money.
