Something I forgot to mention is that after you have done steps 1 - 3 and you are ready to start applying to jobs, do not start with your dream company. I would start with companies I am less excited about so I can get a feel of what the interview process is like! Also the reason why networking is so important is that it might be the software engineer you added on Twitter or a friend that you met at a Hackathon that gives you a referral or helps you to land an interview!

great tips. totally agree on waiting to apply to your dream company until after you have some experience. hopping the first couple of jobs gave me more broad experience quickly then helped me settle into a better position with better pay.

yeah from taking math classes I learned the importance of doing A LOT of problems. I remember sitting in my college dorm room and just going through endless online problems and each problem even if it had just a small tweak challenged me. I feel like it's the same with interview problems. A lot of interview problems look the same however even just a slight difference can require a totally different solution

Thanks for sharing! This was very helpful. I definitely need to add Data Structures and Algorithms to my list of things to learn. I wasn't aware that would be such a big part of the process. I'm from Code In Place as well, I was surprised when I saw your intro video since I had already watched your YT and IG videos, it was a full circle (small world) moment for me. I'm also a student of Unlock Academy, it's a dope coding community.
@MayaBello
@MayaBello 4 жыл бұрын
Knowing those data structures and algorithms are no joke!! The great thing about code in place is that you have already been introduced to two of them, dictionaries and lists! Also for one weeks section we worked on a question called FizzBuzz. That is actually an interview prep question that has been asked at companies like Microsoft and Google (according to Leetcode): leetcode.com/problems/fizz-buzz/

@@MayaBello and I know right! There were so many people in it, it def would've been cool to mix up the sections a little. No problem at all, I'm happy to support! Unlock Academy is dope, Antoine.Digital (Antoine Patton) runs it and he teaches in a way that's easy to get without all the "jargon". He's made it way more accessible for me to learn coding in a way that I couldn't get in college. The Slack community he's built is awesome and everyone is always positive and helpful. He's trying to create more opportunities for POC to succeed in a space where we're the minority. I think you'd be awesome as one of the coaches if you have the free time.

I have been working on being more active in my field while in college to build on my resume and skills and I have definitely considered going to a hackathon but I’m so nervous bc I won’t know anyone with me moving to a new state and all and I also question if my skills are up to par. Have you ever been to a hackathon? How does the process of joining a group work?
@MayaBello
@MayaBello 4 жыл бұрын
great question! I went to my first hackathon after only learning to code for a month! I went with some people from my school and we ended up creating an oculus game. At hackathons you can team up with people you know or you can find people there to pair up with. For example, for in person hackathons they had a room where you can go talk with people and start forming a team. Let me tell you, my first hackathon I sucked! I was coding in a new language and was all in all very confused. Luckily the people I went with were so supportive however at the time I remember beating myself up for not being able to contribute more code. However it's all part of the process and I still had a project to put on my resume!

@MayaBello
@MayaBello 3 жыл бұрын
that is such a good question and so hard to answer!! One good thing about going to college was that my school had a lot of career faires so I could network with different companies and that is how I got my first internship and my first job! My mentor, however, works at Google and he is completely self-taught so I've seen success stories on both ends. Some jobs list you must have a Computer Science degree (or related) to apply however when I talk to self-taught people they say they still apply anyways and its no big deal! I feel like school might be the safer choice, however, paying for school is also a whole other battle! I would say definitely talk to more people as my answer might be biased!

Did you find your degree really helped you get your job? After speaking to people in the industry the overwhelming majority of people believe that the degree is mainly a way of getting your first job... subsequent jobs look a lot more at your experience rather than what degree you have. Do you believe that to be true?
@MayaBello
@MayaBello 3 жыл бұрын
yeah! I feel like one of the benefits of going to school for Computer Science is that top companies would come to my school for career fairs. So what people would do is that they would print out like *90 resumes* and visit all of the different companies. This helped a lot with getting internships and full-time roles. However one of my friends currently works at Google and he is a self-taught software engineer (@champagnecoder on IG). When you look at his resume it's interesting to see the company he started with and his career progression. Another one of my friends (@gitfitdev on IG) is self-taught and he started with contractor jobs in order to get his foot in the door. Some of the people I went to college with are now going through the interview process again and they say that recruiters spend the majority of the time talking about their last work experience and don't bring up college
@jlm_001
@jlm_001 3 жыл бұрын
@@MayaBello I definitely think that’s the common theme now - companies are putting far less emphasis on college degrees simply because they can get talent who are self taught and (I don’t know where about you’re based in the world but in the UK) seems like less people are going towards the traditional uni path just because of the amount it costs to get through the process. Careers fairs is definitely a good shout though - especially if you’re in a “prestigious” uni then you’d get a lot of top companies coming there. *90* resumes seems like an awful lot though 😅. I’ll check those people out on Instagram too! Been wanting to follow more devs in the industry.

@@jlm_001 yeah back when I went to college, boot camps weren't as popular. I was talking to my friend Meezy about this and she was saying if she could do it all over again she wouldn't have gone to school to become a software engineer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIO2dJKIndOjiK8 (haha shameless plug 🙈) I've been wanting to do a video with a self-taught engineer, bootcamp student, and computer science major and compare some of their experiences. I.E. do recruiters reach out to you on Linkedin, how long did it take to find your first job, what were some big surprises when you starting working in industry, etc
@jlm_001
@jlm_001 3 жыл бұрын
@@MayaBelloI definitely feel that boot camps only came about in the past 10 or so years, or they only became hugely popular then at least. One of my friends and ex colleague went to one and he got as much/probably more from a 3 month boot camp than I got from three years at university.
