When I see these interviews I see that most are defeated and really hopeless! My husband has been sober for 12 years off of Heroin he is a 43 year old man with two strikes we have been married 5 years and have a son who is 4. He has a great job and we were able to purchase our home not too long ago. He could not have done it with out Gods help. There is hope!

I have a friend who counsels troubled middle school kids, and I think she does a shit job. She is very snobby and doesn’t seem to try to remotely understand the kids she’s “helping.” I can tell her USC degree made her snobbier and more high-minded because she loses patience with her kids. She doesn’t understand that pain can’t be erased. You need to slowly recover. I myself struggled with staying in college because of similar traumas, so I know what pain like this can do to someone. If she got off her high horse, she’d help those kids a lot more. By the way, my friend and I are both from Boyle Heights. I graduated college just because my sister didn’t let me fall. If it hadn’t been for her, I’d probably be in Maria’s shoes💔💔❤️

That‘s addiction. You loose choice. Have the luck to be sober for 22 years now, crack, alkohol. But still remember very lively the lesson i‘ve Learned then, trying a thousand times to stop and failed in all possible variations again and again. One day was the day I could stop. What was diffrent? I have no Idea. I just don‘t know. Others I knew could‘nt make it, although they tried as hard as I did. The woman is very right, she knows that „it is the time, or it is not“. It is not in our hands, you just can try, thats all.

I was also abused by my uncle and my aunt didn’t believe me. When I spoke up about it she did everything to help him and he was found not guilty in court, very unfairly to me. She lied to family members and made them testify in his favor. Over the years she still comes around and I’ve moved to a different city. Like Maria, I also try to avoid my maternal family because all of the emotional and mental damage they’ve caused me. I was once in a bad place and I was lucky enough to get out of it. I feel for her because it could have easily been me. Sending good and positive vibes Maria ✨ it’s taken me 5 long and hard years but I have slowly healed. When you’re ready you can do it. I have so much faith in you.

You can’t get sober for anyone but yourself and that’s truly the only way we stay sober. She knows that if she gets sober just for her kids & not bc she actually wants and is ready to get sober, it probably wouldn’t last long. Sobriety comes first meaning we have to choose ourselves first every day. It’s something most folks won’t understand unless they struggle w addiction or have been around it.

What a powerful speaker and amazing educator. I can see her working with victims someday, helping them to heal. My experience in the life and the people I’ve known, plus a whole lot of studies and clinical experiences have found that sexual and other abuse and trafficking often come BEFORE the attempt to numb pain with drugs. A lot of people make the opposite assumption, that people turn out on the streets because they’re drug addicts. I know that HAS happened, but you never know what that person has been through first.

@Jane Doe I didn't know that. I'm beginning to think that the best way forward is to promote the stay safe programs for children in schools. At the very least, it gives children the language to explain what's happening. Child sexual abuse features in almost all of the interviews here. It appears to be a major risk factor for addiction.

My guess is she never went to school past the age of 13. She’s extremely articulate and self aware. Once she decides to do it, I believe she has the will power to follow through. She needs to get sick of the street and realize she deserves a gentle life. Her children need stability and a good education. I hope history doesn’t repeat itself. The children need to be protected from the same perpetrators. (First person I’ve ever seen that has my same hair)

I don’t have a father and a mother. I’ve been in very similar boat. Thank God I don’t like drugs, cigarette and alcohol. I love reading and I’m a very driven. I also love my son. I came close losing him. My son is my world. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for him. My best revenge making it and be a better person than the abusers. Don’t give up.

The whole time all I keep thinking about is how intelligent & fluent she sounds when she speaks. She makes it easy to respect her being. It breaks my heart to see someone so special have to feel the hurt she does. The world is such a cruel place. I see so many of these people self medicating just to try to feel a piece of happiness if just for a moment, when most chase that feeling because of something done to them by another selfish humans wants or needs. She seems as if she could be such a positive contribution to the world & she spends her nights in one of the worst places 🤔😤😔🙏

This is a woman I relate to 100 percent, she has spelled it out for exactly how I feel and what I’ve been through.. crazy. Freakin nailed it. Especially the part about not being able to remember fully and praying that you never do because it’s probably too much to deal with... I live with PTSD already and I’m scared that if I had to walk through the memories I would shatter. I really liked this woman’s integrity. She’s going to be ok. Prayers 🙏

This is what I believe. I can understand and respect someone who knows the position they’re in and is trying to seek help. Seriously Maria shared a lot of wisdom even though it was cloaked in sadness. Given that she shared that just the other night she was drugged and probably raped, she chose to focus on the bright side that she woke up on the steps of a church. She has faith that God is looking out for her. There's a certain freedom that drugs, alcohol, sex, food or any other addiction offers people who seek to escape suffering, sorrow and pain. Although those addicts who find the courage deep down within themselves to seek treatment and stay in recovery will gain a tremendous amount of self esteem from their journey towards sobriety. To not hide from woe but rather to face it head on by bearing the pain is a journey only those with inner strength and a belief in a higher power can usually overcome. The painful memories of the past will be like shadows of Heaven once a person reaches their goal of kicking their addiction. Plus it's an awesome story to pass on to their children that they could look pain in the eye and not be so scared that they need to numb themselves, but instead learn of be in control of their own emotions, drug-free. I send Maria all the blessings to find her inner strength, not just for her loved ones, but for herself as the best accomplishment she can ever do in her life.
