This is a rediculously fun review. I was looking for SOG Agency reviews and got lucky that you had this. I dig the first 10 minutes as well as the actual review and the fact that this wasn't a conventional review but something Nutnfancy just had a good time with this one.

In Vietnam, we made the same mistakes that we're making in Afghanistan now but to a greater degree. Special Forces is our unconventional force for combating unconventional guerrillas and insurgents, which is otherwise known as unconventional warfare. We have learned and invested more resources into specialized military units but at the end of the day, war is only a meas to an end, and that end is usually political in nature. Just because you win all the battles doesn't necessarily mean you'll

I actually own one of these knives, and next to my Kabar it's my favorite knife. One thing I'd like to say about the historical points before. They were good, but the Japanese learned to fear and respect US Marines as well. Wake Island taught them that, when 450 marines, held of an entire invasion fleet. My grand father was a Marine Raider, one the original bad asses, he respected his enemy, but knew his duty was to make them fear him, and the legacy he up held. Great vid.

i've come back to this video so many times because that knife just speaks to me. it's such a beauty, and then you add on its history and it gets impossibly cooler. still don't have money for a fixed blade over 100, but man, if the agency came with a kraton version of the handle and a kydex/plastic sheath? ...as it is now, it still may find its way into my collection, even with a low budget haha

Many historical sources cite the Randall 14 & 1 as the most sought after blades by SF Green Berets, "Snake Eaters." and carried by those who could save the money for one. I haven't found much that cited it as being very popular with SEALs, and like you said, KaBars were definitely the most common.

Blackjack really aren't too much more $ than the SOG, $50 or less increase. That said, no other company really mass produces these style knives, aside from the excellent, $220 San Mai Military. Classic. SOG does an excellent job making job knives at good prices, and they do an excellent heat treat. But if you're looking for a classic military blade on a budget, remember a lot of soldiers used Buck 119's and 120's, which are still made in the USA, still beautiful, great leather sheath, and sell for $45-70. Worth considering.

Great review. I'm concerned about the width of the blade. It's quite below what would be considered a "pry bar" combat/survival knife, like the Randall #1. .15 inches vs .25 inches...a big difference. I'd caution against relying on this blade in an extended survival scenario. There's a reason Randall went with 1/4" stock. Passable as a slashing fighter for a single encounter with a lightly clothed opponent, but a less than optimal combat/survival knife for extended operations.

As usual, very cool vid on very cool blade. I'm in the middle of a Vietnam War Class right now, and just happened to catch this today after a very cool lesson on the guerrila forces on both sides of the DMZ. I really enjoyed the historical take in the beginning, it really gives people an outlook and idea for the purpose of these knives. I myself am trying to get into one of the units you mentioned. Outlook on this really gives me some ideas, but personally I am a Demo guy. As usual, HOOAH Sir!

The Gerber Mark II was the second most popular fighting knife in the vietnam war and it wasnt even issued. Only second to the Ka-Bar. Its too bad he didnt mention the Mark II as it was much more widely used. SOG is an abreviation for Studies and Observations Group and thats where the original knife that is pictured here came about. They were made in limited quantities for the special forces; most of the materials coming from Japan.

Randall No 1 was an offshoot of WW II. True, hunting knives were often used as field tools and expedient weapons. The venerable K-Bar became recognized for it's usefulness in said role. But Bo Randall made fighting specific blades for the "greatest generation." In WW I; American forces were carrying "trench knives", in the American Civil War, many soldiers carried purpose made "Bowie knives" as CQC weapons. Nothin' new; but post-VN, we seem to have become more focused on knife specifics.

Titanium is an incredible material. It was used in the making of the surveillance plane Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird". The titanium was extremely fragile under some conditions (some basic tools made the metal to corrode), but what made it amazing was that after each flight (oh, and they had thousands of them) the titanium became stronger and stronger, when flown at high speeds. Now imagine if this knife was shot pass the barrier of sound, what would it be like, heh.

Great video. One small correction on your date for entering the Vietnam war. It wasn't 1965. My first trip to Saigon and then on to Phu Bai was in May of 1963. At that time I was told we had 20,000 troops in country, mostly MACV and Special Forces. I believe Kennedy committed us there in 1962.

Well speaking of tactical blades, during WWII, my grandfather a marine and 17 at the time (he lied about his age). His platoon would take the Ka-bar and grind down the top of the blade to make it doubled edged, because they found that when they tried to dispatch an enemy soldier silently the blade couldn't do the task that they work taught in basic. That being, you would sneak up behind the enemy and drive the knife into the spine and twist. So even back then we saw "tactical knife" use.
