I have a SOG NW Ranger. I got it as a high school graduation present and that was 10 years ago. I still love it. I use it camping to baton wood and I carry it when I hike. It has never showed any rust, it sharpens great. I love this knife!

One of my students brought a NW Ranger to a bushcraft course. Though Scandi ground Moras and puukkos are more common, the SOG was an excellent knife. Strong, comfortable and controllable. For $50 it's a great bargain. Even $100 with custom kydex is a good deal.

I ordered one of these bad boys yesterday and can't wait. I have a remedy for the sheath. (I've don't this before) You cut 2 slits in the sheath, and insert a side keeper (ALICE clip) through the slits. Then you can attach it to your gear. OR, to keep the sheath nice, put a few layers of 100 mph tape on it, and do the same thing as above.

I've heard you say it before, "some knives just do it for me", and this one does for me. I love that raised jimping and that beautiful bowie shape.

I have owned mine since 1994 and it still serves me well. My knife happens to have half serrations which is ok, but I prefer that type of straight blade. Yes, a good kydex sheath would be awesome for that knife. I'm sure there are lots of custom sheath makers out there. Great Review!

Another knife that I love in this range is the Cold Steel Master Hunter. I was able to get one in the San Mai III for around $70, now you can get it in the CPM 3V. Has a slightly thicker blade and comes with a better sheath as well. It's half an inch shorter but has less choil giving you the same cutting edge. It also has the FFG as well.

@nutnfancy13 жыл бұрын
@rlaycock86 I might someday. It's a time issue and storage issue. I'm tight on space as it is and a Kydex press is just more stuff. Kydex is indeed easy to work with. Getting it perfect though takes talent and I'm particular in my Kydex.
@jpenna197613 жыл бұрын
@nutnfancy I have had it about 11 years and it has that old style kydex sheat. I just recently found out that they have almost tape thin diamond sharpener (adhessive tape on the backside) for newer Zytel sheat. I havent had need to sharpen my S1 very often, but it sounds like a useful extra feature.

Just got the satin version of this knife and it's awesome!! Lightweight, great handle, beautiful blade, super-sharp jimping and came hair-shaving sharp! like Nutn said, only downside is the sheath, but I also got the Nylon sheath meant for the SEAL Pup, Pup Elite and Pentagon and it fits this blade well! This will be my day-hiking and camp knife and I can't wait to test it out. Thanks for the great review Nutn, this knife is everything you said it was and more! Keep up the great work!!
@AirForceAce357111 жыл бұрын
FYI for any TNPrs that want a cheap sheath alternative: You can get a SOG Nylong sheath that is meant for the SEAL Pup Elite and it will fit the NW Ranger. I did that and it fits the knife well (not perfectly but very well), is lighter than the leather, doesn't absorb water and is MOLLE capable. I have a NW Ranger in that sheath in my BOB and it works well!
@nutnfancy13 жыл бұрын
@YochananT It's well spent. Expect to see a Kydex on these NWRs in the future. I ain't waiting for SOG to do it.

Be sure that when you buy this knife it is either sog model number s240 or s241 (the blackened verison) which have the AUS8 blade. I bought the NW ranger model s24 today and was disapointed to find out it had an AUS6 blade. I have found that there is a pretty big preformce difference between AUS6 and AUS8. Great knife design though and a great review.

so glad you finally got the tabletop on this knife!!! only knife by SOG that replaces my seal pup elite as a camp knife
@FallacyofMan13 жыл бұрын
The reason, I believe, that SOG doesn't do a plastic/kydex sheath is that to make the form/cast of the kydex or plastic can cost from $5000-10,000, and this would obviously increase the cost of the knife. At least, that's what Jeff Randall told me over at BFC while explaining why the ESEE-6 has a plastic sheath and most of the others in the ESEE line don't.
@giupio8813 жыл бұрын
When one of my knives has some rust (just spots or even medium-deep corrosion) I usually treat it with a cold diluited solution of phosphoric acid (3-5% in weight). The rust will turn into light blue-ish iron phosphate: it stops further corrosion and it's quite impervious to heat and mechanical stress. It's important to use a cold and diluited solution: heat and concentrated solutions will produce big crystals, which are brittle. (Probably there are better systems. I like this one, anyway.)

Just received mine today. Didn't think I'd care for the handle material but its not bad. Traced its outline though to make another after I bang it up a bit. Absolutely wonderful size, weight, and price. Don't like the sheath. Typical quality, with the black dye staining my fingers. No worry though. Have a kydex holster maker that will do one next time their sales rep is in and I can lend him the knife.

@jpenna1976 The Fällkniven S1 is outstanding, highly recommended. It's lam. VG10 is excellent and I've talked about it a lot in the A2 and A1 reviews. The advantage of the Fällknivens is excellent batoning capes due to their thicker blades. More expensive yes but I think they're worth the price.

For a similar option has anyone considered the Kabar Mark1? The blade geometry is almost identical, price is the same, pommel is flattened for smashin' stuff like most kabar knives, steel is 1095, and it comes with a plastic super secure sheath. 3 oz heavier though.

I'm concerned about the durability of that Kraton handle personally. I like the overall design, it's good to see a stainless option in this size and at this price point. I would pay another $50 if they'd put G10 handle scales on it and a decent sheath.

Gotta say, I had them make my sheath for this very knife and didn't love it. Wasn't as well made as one I had made for my Seal Pup elite by a normal joe out of Washington state. I ended up taking a dremel to the Armadillo sheath - made it better and I'm no expert. Perhaps I went in with high expectations, and I'm not exactly crapping on their product, but it just wasn't ideal. Their service and speed was very good though. I'd recommend them as an option but felt like I should have gone to the other guy. I could email pics or share on arfcom if you're curious what I mean. cheers.
