As typical, Nutn doesn’t apply his criteria across the board. Bashes the finger cutout, but it’s great on the Spyderco Street Bowie. It’s too heavy, but the CS SRK is great, and it’s like 2 Oz heavier. Just say it doesn’t appeal to you.......

I just bought this same SOG Pillar knife in the same S35VN steel but in satin polish, not black, for $157.00 on Amazon. The manufactures stated weight is 7.3 ounces, far from the heavyweight you are suggesting it is. What am I missing?

Just came back to this review, didn’t realize I commented on it a year ago. Nutn needs new frickin scales, this knife is not anywhere close to 11 Oz, it’s 7.3 and the kydex sheath is as light as they come. Maybe the handle is too short for him, but plenty long for me, and while I agree somewhat about the finger bump, it works fine for my hands. The finger bump on a Benchmade super Freek is far worse as it rubs my middle finger. Frankly, you could tell he didn’t use it and due to his close minded biases, he just wrote it off. Nevermind with careful shopping, the stonewash version can be found for $130, the kydex sheath is light, easy to mount, with excellent retention AND it’s quick and easy to draw, just push away with your thumb and no strap to unbutton. I too like SRKS, but they are noticeably heavier, the sheaths are much worse, and the SK5 and San Mai versions have hollow grinds making the tip very weak. The only ones to get are the 3V with sabre grind and get a kydex sheath. The bark river is also noticeably thicker and heavier, especially with the leather sheath, which he usually rags on. And the cheapest version is $230. Perhaps a more comparable knife would be a Benchmade Nimravus, but it’s got a shorter blade with a shitty nylon sheath that weighs more, also has the finger bump and costs a ton more. I find the Pillar a comfortable knife. I dig the pointy blade, and while stylistically overdone, it works to scrape off bark or strike a firesteel. The pommel is also overdone, but it offers a less lethal striking option and could be used as a glass breaker. I just think this is Nutn’s absolutely worst knife review ever. He was biased against it from the start, was too lazy to weigh it and never used it. I don’t even know he even bought it.

That is a really tough choice! I have the esee 6 and it is perfect. Esee 5 and Izula are great as well. My Tops B.O.B. is my goto for fire prep, and Tom Brown Scout for edc. Esee and Tops make such quality knives. Thinking about legion 6 or dawn warrior for next buy... The problem with tops is that they make such a large variety of fantastic options.

ESEE makes great knives and is famous for its warranty, but for me, the knife is what counts. I’ve trusted my life with TOPS Knives many times over the years. Never had one fail me. Although, I would probably pick the ESEE 6 over the TOPS Legion. But only because of the aesthetic value. I like it’s looks better.

Nice 2nd cool. My context is that I always prefer to have a similar sized fixed knife along when I hunt. I'll sacrifice extra knife weight for that. (I have an SRK, and low and behold, I see one here in your review) Not for game, but as a just in case. My hunting walk or climb is usually inside of 2 miles. Others carry a water bottle. I carry a mini back pack in case I find out the local town was overrun with lizard people, and I have to camp out overnight. (Some day I might seek counseling for my disability, but I'm good with it for now.)

I would direct people to the Becker knives made by Kabar. I'm definitely a fixed blade guy, and only go to a folder if deep concealment is necessary. I open carry a BK15, which has a 5.5 in trailing point blade. 1095 CV steel, flat grind, and coated with a black bed liner type material. I daily it in the sheath it comes with, and put a small can of mace in the outside pocket. They discontinued the BK15 blade shape, but you can get the BK16 still. Same length, but it's a drop point instead. I got mine on close out for $62, and all the Beckers are made in America. Going price is around $100 I believe. $230 would make this a no go for me to carry everyday, not when Kabar is putting out quality American blades for less. When I was in Afghan my bayonet served as my tactical blade. I strapped it upside-down to the shoulder strap of my plate carrier. That way I could reach up, unclip the sheath, and pull it downward out of the sheath. I didn't want the weight on my belt or on the front of my plate carrier. Already had more than enough weight there from all the mags. I just carred a leatherman wave as my utility blade.

Becker, meh..... the only one I dig is the BK9. For wood processing, I like the saber grind. It splits wood better. Otherwise, they have shitty handles, are too heavy, and come with garbage sheaths.

@@donrichter3523 to each their own. Mine has done me well. I don't spend $150+ on knives, and the Beckers are a quality American made blade for a decent price. I like the sheath, open carry it on my belt with a can of mace in the outer pocket. It's lasted years in daily carry. Flat grind is strong, which I want in a tactical blade. I don't split wood with mine. Collapsable saw and a hatchet are less effort.

Living in Texas has its perks.... I rotate two fixed blade knives every day. One is a TOPS Brakimo. The other is a TOPS Prather War Bowie. Every day. Rear scout carry, inside the waistband. They never get in the way. In fact, I usually don’t even notice them. The only folding knife I carry would be one with a marlin spike. That comes in a hella lot more handy than anything on any multi-tool that I used to carry.

I have a fixed blade I made from a truck spring . It has a 3 level torch hardening prosses . 3 levels of hardness . Spine is same as the spring , and slightly harder for the second and edge . I made it in 1978 , I have sharpened it 3 times and skinned countless deer and other animals . It's not a ax so I don't use it for one but I do cut leg joints and rib and back joints . I don't split wood by buttoning , it's a knife . Last time it was sharpened was about 10 years ago , it shaves now . The handle is stacked aluminum and brass shims with a piece of elk horn in the middle . The finger guard was made from a block of aluminum and the pummel was made from a block of aluminum all ground to match the elk horn . I have been offered $2K for it and passed . It will be handed down to my grandson and he will hand it down to his first grandson , and it will still be a great knife . My folder is a Benchmen spring assisted and it has a ok blade but it's my work blade haven't broke it yet but needs sharpening often to keep it sharp .

Sent back the Crusader, and it was just grinded down to a leaf thin blade when got it back. One would think they would just send a new blade to satisfy customers over sea,but doesn't seem that way. People still really seem to like them,so maybe I was just really got unlucky with the steel and the customer service.. Who knows, but that's my experience. Maybe I'm just spoiled with Scandinavian quality blades. Never getting a Bark River ever again, much rather spend the money on a Fällkniven or something that can actually handle to be used.

What steel was your knife made from, sir?
@Cid_1

@@charlessalmond7076 1 In CPM 154 & one in CPM 3V. The one in CPM-154 was really chewed up,the newer one in 3V seemed a bit tougher but got a few dings at the front. Over all not really impressed with the quality. And especially how I got the one back all grinded down to pretty much half it original thickness. The sheet also had imperfections but held the knife in place so it didn't bother me that much. But for the price I would really expect more, like I have gotten from pretty much any other knifemakers in the same price range if I had a issue I usually get a new knife or a refund. But I ended up selling them at a pretty big loss. But at least now we have Norwegian knife stores selling them,so people having issues can at least do the warranty through them which makes a lot more sense due to EU warranties. But for me It just put me off the whole brand. When I buy a $300-$400+ knife I expect to be able to use them (specially when advertised as "bushcraft/hunting knives" ),and not as something sitting in a drawer or a shelf. People seem to really like the knives, maybe their standards isn't as high as mine. Or maybe their use is different than mine. Maybe I just got super unlucky with both my random purchased knives. But I got $80-$100 scandinavian knives that's held up a lot better like a good old Lapp/Puukko knives or Brusletto Bamsen. And the Knives from Lon Humphrey have been a joy to work with compared to Bark River.

@@Cid_1 i am sorry to hear that, sir. I ask because I just purchased my first bark river. The appearance on mine is impeccable. I guess time will tell about durability. Thank you for not being defensive.

@@charlessalmond7076 No problem, sir. One win some and lose some,in the knife game. I'm glad to hear that, hopefully it serves you well. People wouldn't have kept buying them,if they were bad knives. And I would say from the people I see and know owning them is usually overwhelmingly positive feedback over all. Though I do feel some might be holding back a little,it's not easy for some to admit if they put a lot of money into something they not 100% happy with. But I'm more of the type that speak my mind and move on :) Getting nowhere dwelling on something one can't change, better to find something one like and keep it moving ;) I'm super happy with the Lon Humphrey that uses the same steel and they also look beautiful,so will pick up a few more of them when I have the chance. Cheers

Just go to a junk yard, buy some broken leaf springs for nearly nothing.. Buy a few old flat files.. grind down a couple knives, heat harden it and be done with spending hundreds and thousands on knives. Metal is cheap.

I don't see it as a wood working knife It looks too good (and is too expensive) to actually use lol I'd carry it once in awhile just for 2nd cool as a secondary or tertiary knife

It goes without saying that your opinion is respected, and I find most of your reviews to be genuinely objective. However, this review of the SOG Pillar appears to be a glaring exception. What you have done is basically decided, for whatever reason, that you do not like the Pillar, then proceeded to completely ignore it's primary appeal to potential buyers- That being a great 'all-around' knife that, while perhaps not the first choice for any single purpose, is an excellent choice for the buyer who wants a knife that can fill all roles adequately. Instead of recognizing that, you trotted out THREE other knifes that can perform various tasks better than the Pillar. Your Bark River is too heavy & too long to wear comfortably around the waist when hiking or Camping. It's blade, while possibly a more versatile shape, is too too large to be a legitimate bush-crafting knife. Your Seal Pup has an inferior steel, and while it will suffice well for bushcraft/camping and even skinning/gutting in a pinch, can't match the more challenging tasks to qualify as a survival tool, while the Pillar can. The SRK is an excellent choice and comes the closest of your 'alternatives' to matching the Pillars overall appeal; however, it again has an inferior steel and costs nearly the same as the Pillar if you go for the better version. Sorry Dude, but I think you've let way too much bias slip into this review and, in doing so, missed the true appeal of the Pillar!
