Curved balls....you give the ball a spin when kicking it. The physics behind it is called Maxwell effect.

Some answers to your questions: 1. Curved balls: soccer players are trained to kick the ball in various ways, straight, curved with the inside, curved with the outside, with the toes, with the heel etc. They curve the ball e.g. to get around defenders and make it harder for goal keepers because the ball comes from a more difficult angle if it's curved. Another reason is to be able to pass to somebody when you cannot pass directly in a straight line because he is being marked by a defender. 2. Free kicks are awarded to the opposing team when a team commits a foul. They can be anywhere on the pitch. If they are close enough to the goal, the player taking the free kick might make an attempt to score directly out of the free kick. If the free kick takes place farther from the opponents goal, they will just pass it. If the foul takes place within the box, it's a penalty kick, not a free kick. 3. If you want to see raw talent and brilliance in all aspects of the game (dribbling, passing, shooting), watch videos of the Brazilian player, Ronaldinho. 4. UCL = UEFA Champions League. 5. Inbounding a corner kick: you don't have to be out of bounds. You have to be out of bounds when you throw in the ball after it had left the field on the sides. 6. Time limit on inbounds: no, there isn't, but the ref can take the possession away after some time if he feels like you are wasting time.

The guy at 18:39 (Trent Alexander-arnold) was going to allow another player to take the corner but he noticed that the opposition were not paying attention so using his initiative he suddenly took the corner and it lead to a game winning goal

It’s the combination of curve and power that’s truly incredible. That is arguably the greatest free kick ever. Fabien Barthez (the French goalkeeper) is no pushover but he was rooted to the spot. I remember watching that game live and everyone was thinking no way Roberto Carlos was even going to attempt that. Not from that distance, surely?! Cue a million jaws hitting the floor as the net rippled.

Just a nice little detail you didn't know. When Iniesta took his shirt off, he did it in memory of his friend Dani Jarque, who was a Spanish professional footballer who played as a central defender and was Iniesta's best friend. He spent his entire career with Espanyol, and was named team captain one month before his death from a heart attack at the age of 26. Iniesta's shirt said "Dani Jarque Siempre Con Nosotros" which means "Dani Jarque you will always be with us".

I remember asking my college physics professor back when that kick happened. He said Bernoulli's Principle was at play with that one. Roberto Carlos was a master of the free kick, and kicking with the center-outside of his foot with massive force!

@@djoscartj From what I've read, it was a combination of the physics of a curved shot and a knuckleball - the air bladder inside compresses when kicked hard af, and when the compression rebounds it exaggerates the spin on the ball. In a typical knuckleball, a la Ronaldo's best free kicks, spin is minimal, so the bladder compresses and rebounds kind of randomly, giving the ball it's weird left-right-up-down flight pattern. Someone nerdier than me will probably correct this.

Football, when weel played, is perhaps the most beautiful of all team sports. It doesn't have the rigid sameness of American Football, neither the constant scoring that dilutes the excitement in Basketball. It may sound odd to American ears to hear that a match tied at one goal each, but that's why a match can be so exciting: your team may score the match-tying goal at the last minute and avoid defeat, or better, score and win.

Milan Liverpool UCL final 2005, Italy France World Cup Final 2006, Barcelona PSG UCL 2017, Italy Brazil World Cup 1970, Italy France EuroCup 2000, Spain Argentina World Cup 2010, Manchester United Bayern Munchen UCL 1999. But more of other things, the great beauty of football is that everyone can defeat everyone. For example, in rugby the 14th team in the ranking (Italy) never won against the second (New Zealand), in football the 14th (Switzerland) defeated the 2nd (France).

10:43 "The announcer is about have a heart attack." This is Netherlands vs. Argentina, quarter final, World Cup 1998. (I.e. win this match and you join the group of the last 4 national teams still in the race for the world championship), so there was a lot of tension surrounding this match. It had been a nerve-wrecking game (at least for us Dutch) with a lot happening on the field. Playing time was almost up, there were about 45 seconds left, and the score at that time was 1-1 (i.e. undecided). So everyone was already figuring the game would drag into 2*15 minutes extra time when suddenly this decisive goal fell in those last dying seconds. The Dutch commentator then completely lost his composure and could only keep screaming the name of the player that scored the goal (Dennis Bergkamp). The goal has become legendary in World Cup history (especially the way Bergkamp is able to get the ball under perfect control with just that one touch from his right leg in mid-air after that long pass across nearly the entire field is seen as brilliant), and, at least in the Netherlands, this commentary has become about as famous as the goal itself. In 2018, on Dutch national TV , the commentator himself described his own commentary of then 20 years ago as 'perhaps slightly orgiastic'.

With football being the monolith it is, you've seen moments that will rank among the happiest moments in the lives of many many millions of people. It has one of mine too, the Bergkamp goal against Argentina.

The Bergkamp goal is one that doesn't look spectacular to football newcomers, because Bergkamp makes something that is INCREDIBLY difficult look easy. He just gets everything perfect in three touches, to conjure a goal almost out of nowhere. An experienced football watcher seeing the long pass is not going to assume there's a strong chance of a goal because of how difficult it will be to get that ball under control, get past a marker who is right on his shoulder and then beat the keeper from not the greatest angle. And then he just does all three in quick succession.

Usually after a pass like that and proper marking players just try to hammer it into the corner immediately which is a low percentage shot or control the ball, carry it wide and look for a cross. That Bergkamp found this solution speaks volumes about his instincts.

That Liverpool Corner kick you paused on @ 19:00 was a great goal, Barcelona thought they were changing the kick taker and were relaxed, when Alexander Arnold realised none of them were looking he quickly ran back to take it after him and his team mate Origi had locked eyes. There were 2 legs to this game to go to the Champions League final and Liverpool had lost to Barcelona 3-0 at their home ground and they had to overcome this deficit and score 4 goals to win which they did in amazing style in Liverpool.

16:48 - that was a crazy moment. Bayern was down 0:1 at half-time, then Lewandowski came on as a half-time substitution, and 6 minutes later scored a goal. 9 minutes after that, he'd scored 4 more times - insane.

I always smile when I hear "the greatest player to ever live". Don't get me wrong, Messi is a genius. But so was Stanley Mathews or Ferenz Puskas or Alfredo de Steffano - in their day. Josef Masopust, Bobby Charlton, Garrincha, Best - in their day. Claudio Gentile, Rivelino, Pele, Beckenbauer, Moore, Johan Cruyff - in their day. Schuster, Zico, Lothar Matthaus, Marco van Basten, Shearer - In their day. Should I go on? It's impossible to say who was 'the greatest of all time'. The best might be the greatest 11 of all time. But good luck with that!

@@nari5025 Usually the rule is if the ball left the field you can put it back in without a whistle from the referee, be it throw-ins, goal kicks or corner kicks. Corners usually just take time to take because most of the time the center backs go for the header so you have to wait for them, but I am pretty sure that if you wanted to you can take the corner pretty much insantly.

After that you can study all the physics behind, but doesn't matter, the ball was deviated by the wind. Roberto Carlos himself admits that it was thanks to the wind. Every player use the Magnus Effect and the Bernoulli's Principle kicking a free kick (the ball is an object in a fluid), but in that case was thanks to the wind if Carlos scored.

When the ball is turning, on the surface at the side the rotation is toward the direction of the ball, the air moves quicker over the surface of the ball than on the side the rotation is against the direction of the ball where the air moves slower over the surface. The side of the quicker airflow is exposed to some under pressure, which modifies the direction of the ball. See the Bernoulli Principle in physics. This is the same law which makes airplanes fly, that are heavier than air.

To add to this, it is basically impossible for a human to shoot a ball without any sort of spin and therefore curve. So while adding a certain curve to a shot is a skill deliberately used, every shot will have some sort of curve, becoming more noticable the longer a ball travels. Also wind becomes a factor aswell on longer distances.

The majority of scientists explains the pressure difference by the Bernoulli principle. So maybe your teachers were no proponents of the prevailing theory. Of course, any scientific theory may be falsified and replaced by a better one. As I am no aeronautic scientist, I stick at the prevalent theory, till the majority in the subject change their convictions.

Yes most of the stuff is really recent when the game is not as beautiful as it was imo. Some of the stuff Cruyff made in the 70's was really groundbreaking and i doubt few players if any can really replicate it today and even if they do they are just doing something that someone did before and did it better.

@@jinujoju8183 I'm 60 and I most certainly remember as a 9yr old in the summer of 1970 when Pele was the star of that great Brazil team at the Mexico world cup. Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto, Gerson, Tostao, Rivelino, Felix etc. One of the greatest teams ever at a tournament. I also remember as a 13 & 17 yr old the great Dutch teams led by Johan Cruyff in the world cups of '74 & '78. I was also privileged to see both Cruyff and George Best play during their careers. Sadly I never got to see Pele in the flesh but thankfully there was this wonderful invention called the television.

absolutely. Goalies are often discounted but there are really great players on that position such as Bartez, Buffon, Cassillas, Čech, Kahn, Schmeichel (senior) or Neuer. Especially Neuer has redefined how to play as a goalie and many are trying to imitate his style of play.

Oh, they included the infamous "Hand of God"! Well, I don't know if that can be counted as "one of the greatest moments" in football. In the quarter finals of the world cup 1986, Argentina was playing England. In the shown situation 10:15, the Argentinan player Diego Maradonna used his hand to achive the goal, as video evidence clearly showed. But the referee hadn't seen it clearly, and of course he had no direct access to the TV images. He considered it a header, and thus valid. Maradonna also scored a second, very impressive goal in that match, ultimately resulting in Argentina's victory, paving the way for her second title. Maradonna of course knew it was an invalid goal, though he explained it at that time as "a bit of Maradonna's head, and God's hand", thus giving rise to that term (and his nickname). He also later wrote about that it was for him a bit of a revenge for the Falkland war, which had happened just four years earlier. It wasn't until the early 2000's that he admitted his misplay, and finally expressed regret.

9:00 the mario götze one in the world cup finals in 2014. i still remember this game. it was minute 113 so only 7 minutes to play and it was just perfect and in that moment we knew we won and even Angela Merkel (who was in the stadium watching the final) was celebrating that goal. it’s been a couple years already but it was the first world cup i remember watching and being excited about.

If you would like to see what, in my own personal opinion, is pure footballing poetry in motion, do yourself a favour, and watch the 1970 World Cup Final. Brazil vs Italy. The Brazil team contained some of the most talented players the game has ever seen, including Pele, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino, Tostão and Jairzinho. Brazils 4th goal is still one of the most breathtaking ‘team’ goals I have ever seen. I’m sure you’ll appreciate it.

Really interesting for a European to watch an American discover our world :D Yes, you can make the ball curve by kicking slightly off center. That will cause the ball to spin, and the spin causes the ball to curve towards the one side or the other. Basically the same as a baseball player who throws the ball with a spin, as you point out.
