SAMAYA is the spiritual bond, commitment and loyalty between a student and his Guru, To maintain good, clean samaya is to engage in Dharma practice exactly in accordance with our teacher’s instructions, with the belief and faith that everything the teacher advises us is for the higher benefit of ourselves and many other sentient beings. It is to keep our promises, uphold our words of honor and carry out instructions perfectly.
To break samaya is to go against our words of honour to our Guru . It is when we are not honest, if we are deceptive or lie in any way, if we do not carry out the instructions of our teacher and do not practice what he has told us to. This collects a huge amount of negative karma because we directly contradict the Dharma teachings (truth) and go against what our holy teachers are telling us to do.
BUT WHEN THE GURU SHOWS HIMSELF TO BE A LIAR ..DECEIVER ..AND TAKE SEXUAL ADVANTAGE OF THE DISCIPLES ...THIS SAMAYA VOW BECOME VOID AND NULL (that the opinion of Henry )

II started off as a student of Sangharakshita with the FWBO. At first I was highly regarded. But then the FWBO began to change. Sangharakshita visited NZ and 'ordained' a lot of people as Upasakas, most of them friends I had brought into Buddhism . I was increasingly excluded as I was not only FWBO. I also studied with the FPMT, Theravadins, anywhere I could learn Dharma, spending 3 months as an Anagarika in Sri Lanka at the Bhikku Training Centre, a gift from the Sri Lankans in NZ because I had helped them set up their temple. I was increasingly critical of the FWBO. Especially I thought the ‘initiations’ into a personal deity during the Upasaka ceremony were probably not correct and real. When the FWBO (now the Triratna Buddhist Community) started attacking Christianity and preaching homosexuality, I left. Please note I have always encouraged LBGT freedom, but what was happening was abusive. And debating and criticising other religions is OK - but abusing them is not. After studying with Theravadins for 5 years I played some part in establishing Rigpa in Australia. In 1986, four Dzogchen masters came to Australia: Sogyal Rinpoche, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu , Dzongsar Khyentse.and Chagdud Tulku. I studied with them all and continued to study with them and support them for many years. Even though I was penniless, all of these organizations followed the principle that nobody should be blocked from Dharma because they were poor. After maybe 8 years, I concluded that things were going wrong with Rigpa. Geshe Dharghey , who was greatly respected by Sogyal Rinpoche, gave me a message for him: “Have more respect for your students”. This reinforced my idea that Sogyal Rinpoche was becoming abusive. I then left Rigpa and have since found my real guru, who is pure and unsullied, and I was accepted as a Buddhist teacher. I accept the truth of the allegations against Sogyal and am horrified. There is something I need to point out. If you look at the list f the Ten fetters in the Pali Canon, it is apparent that a person can have very great spiritual understanding and power and still be corrupt. A once-returner can still have sexual desire and inappropriate lust. The desire for power over others is in fact a part of the last fetter, ignorance. You can have a great guru and they can still be wrong or even go bad. I am less familiar with Mahayana, but if I understand correctly, a Bodhisattva at less than the 8th bhumi can go right off the track for a couple of lives. Sangharakshita is very intelligent, an important scholar, and quite a powerful meditator. Sogyal Rinpoche is not terribly intelligent but has deep spiritual understanding and power. This makes it all the worse when he uses that understanding and power to mislead others. I found that somehow, although we often talked and knew each other well, Sogyal never became a personal friend and formed the bond that I have with other Teachers. Both of these people established very good course and training structures, and vigorously spread Dharma throughout the world, but later used them as money makers (though courses were still at reasonable prices, not like the Scientologists), led by people who were not properly trained. Their retreats are not cultish. People are not ‘love-bombed’ but have plenty of time to reflect and think, and come and go freely. At least that time, up to say 1995, Sogyal very rarely gave initiations and told his students that he was a ‘fake guru’, definitely not Enlightened, and only worth studying with because there were so few real gurus left. Sogyal arranged for his students to meet genuine gurus, great lamas, and even to go off and study with them. He was awed, humble and respectful around such lamas. Sogyal also studied with Chogyal Namhkai Norbu for two or three weeks. whenever he came to Australia before starting his retreat lecture training. I don’t in any way excuse the crimes and damage done by Sangharakshita and Sogyal, (and am sickened by what the Khenpos say about cancer. I would not study under someone with such poor logic) If you call them (S&S) predators, abusers, rapists and criminals, I will agree with you. They both richly deserve excommunication and legal punishment. But they are not charlatans or imposters. They are people with true understanding who have gone off-track. I would never accept either as a guru. I am not trying to excuse either of them when I say they did set up well-run and useful organisations and that there was true Dharma in both for thousands of people. I have had almost no contact with Rigpa since 1996 and things may have changed a great deal, especially for the core group. .Sogyal Rinpoche broke the Samaya with students by undertaking actions for his own gain not for the benefit of students.. No Samaya now exists. The inner truth of Samaya is that it is to Padmasambhava and the Dharma. I’m sorry for the long comment, but there is info in there that I think people should know. I won’t return to read replies for fear of trolls. May all beings be happy and well.

It's important to know that samaya vows are ONLY taken when pursuing the most advanced, esoteric teachings in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Normally, students must have years, if not decades, of preliminary teachings, and intermediate teachings, before reaching the level of Highest Yoga Tantra teachings, which is when samaya vows are required. However. traditionally, not all students are deemed capable of learning and practicing HYT, and in addition to the guru not selecting some, others opt out of their own accord. It is not routine, that students would reach that stage, and receive those teachings. The sign of a corrupt guru is one who requires samaya in the early stages of teaching, or who tells his students they're so intelligent, they don't need the preliminary teachings--they can go straight to tantric teachings. This is a trap. A deliberate trap, to manipulate students, and to groom the women for sex.

It only took the Dalai Lama 30 yrs to directly speak up! He talked in general terms abuse but never addressed issues directly like Vatican covering abusive priests! So the sooner you throw the abusors in jail according to International criminal law ....get Interpol involved...the better! :) Gooodluck...thank you for wanting to help many many #metoo victims in Buddhism...I saw abuse. I reported the abuse but the victims often dont want to come forward. Totally true!

Accusing one's medical condition on others is a despicable act. I thought he couldn't sink any lower and it would appear I was mistaken.

I agree entirely with everything said in this video. I have been a student of a genuine Rinpoche for over 35 years and am appalled at Sogyal Lakar's behaviour and fraudulent claim to be a recognised reincarnation.

Sogyal is a despicable user of vulnerable sangha, if you see this sort of terrible behavior within the Sangha, no matter who it's from, whether that be a lama or another sangha member, stand up, let it be known, don't let it go, this abuse creates so much suffering. I hope Sogyal returns to health, and that he apologizes for the suffering he has put on to others.

Total nonsense. He gave himself colon cancer with his lifestyle. Too little exercise, life long unhealthy food choices and the stress of constant travel and jet lag. Under those circumstances, at 70 it's expectable that the body starts to quit on him.

Despicable to blame the unfortunate disciples like this. It's a good reminder for westerners not to go ga ga over anyone called rinpoche, or swami, or whatever. Often you can find more enlightened people working at the corner store.. . May all former disciples find proper guidance, peace and love within.

He's a nasty piece of work who has never shown the slightest concern for the students who have come forward. I'd advise anyone to leave and avoid Rigpa. And good for you speaking out yourself. Please don't be offended, but is your speech pattern a result of English not being your native language?? Thanks for making this video. It's the right thing too do for the sake of those he used and abused, and any future aspirants.

I think it's obvious that taking a vow to remain loyal and obedient no matter what to some fancified guru is a HUGE mistake. Don't give yourself away to the whims of someone else.

This is madness, but it was only a matter of time. Hopefully the beginning of the end of Vajrayana in the west.
