Sogyal Rinpoche in opspraak. Deel 1: De Middenweg van Jan Geurtz

In juli 2017 publiceerden acht voormalig studenten van de Tibetaans boeddhistische leraar Sogyal Rinpoche een kritische brief over zijn gedrag. De leraar werd beschuldigd van seksueel misbruik, fysieke mishandeling en een extravagante levensstijl. Wat doet dit nieuws met zijn leerlingen en andere betrokkenen? Menno Bijleveld interviewt een aantal van hen met elk een verschillend perspectief.
Radio- en filmmaker Menno Bijleveld was 22 jaar student van Sogyal Rinpoche. Na het lezen van de eerste brief is hij opgestapt bij Rigpa. Met deze serie wil Menno ervaringen en visies van (voormalige) studenten en andere betrokkenen van Sogyal Rinpoche aan bod laten komen. Bovendien hoopt hij dat gaandeweg slachtoffers van zijn gedrag zich melden, zodat hij ook hen kan interviewen.
Deel 1: De Middenweg van Jan Geurtz
Jan Geurtz was van 1998 tot 2015 student van Sogyal Rinpoche. Ook Geurtz kreeg te maken met de opmerkelijke persoonlijkheid van Rinpoche. In dit interview vertelt hij over zijn eigen ervaringen, die deels raken aan de openbare aantijgingen. Geurtz heeft geprobeerd zowel de positieve als negatieve confrontaties met Sogyal Rinpoche aan te wenden voor spirituele groei. Waar een deel van zijn volgelingen het gedrag van Sogyal vergoeilijken en critici het veroordelen, bepleit Jan Geurtz “de middenweg”.
Achtergrond: Sogyal Rinpoche in opspraak
Sogyal Rinpoche was van 1979 tot augustus 2017 spiritueel directeur van Rigpa, een boeddhistische organisatie met inmiddels 130 meditatiecentra wereldwijd. Daarnaast verwierf de leraar internationaal bekendheid en aanzien als auteur van de bestseller “Het Tibetaans boek van leven en sterven.”
De schrijvers van de brief zijn zich in hoge mate bewust van Sogyals positieve publieke imago. Aan het begin van de brief benadrukken ze dan ook hoezeer zijn publieke voorkomen contrasteert met zijn gedrag achter de schermen:
“This letter is our request to you to stop your unethical and immoral behavior. Your public face is one of wisdom, kindness, humor, warmth and compassion, but your private behavior, the way you conduct yourself behind the scenes, is deeply disturbing and unsettling. A number of us have raised with you privately, our concerns about your behavior in recent years, but you have not changed.”
Het gedrag waar de acht studenten hun leraar op aanspreken, wordt in de brief zeer expliciet beschreven. Van het slaan van studenten met rugkrabbers, via verzoeken tot strippen en orale seks, tot het urenlang televisie kijken onder het genot van dure maaltijden. Hoewel Rigpa en Sogyal Rinpoche nauwelijks serieus reageerden op de aantijgingen, stapt Sogyal in augustus 2017 op als spiritueel directeur van Rigpa.

" The trouble is I love you so much" is the classic refrain of an abusive narcissist. How many people have been subjected to constant physical and emotional abuse only to be told it is coming from a place of love? It is sad to hear this being given as the explanation by a man who clearly had lost all sense of reality as power had corrupted him and his shadow had emerged to rain down misery on others. The teachings are one thing - the abusive behaviour of the teacher is another. It's a familiar story the world over and will continue so long as people fail to stand up to these people and call them out.

Watched the entire series, thx for posting. Pretty much sums things up, parts 1 through 4... I felt like I could be a part 5 while watching. My big take away was in what Tahlia Newland admitted, which I do as well (however, from within the Shambalian tradition). Love that there are four parts of lama (in case one part fails), with KZbin being part of those backups.

The answer to that question is a big NO. SR didn't even do that with his oldest student of 40 years, never mind allowing this guy!!!! Jan used to spend his time chasing all the young females in Lerab Ling, who were very much creeped out by him. Don't think he got any as he was too creepy for them.

It's comprehensible. Denial comes from pain. And it' is terribly painful. Already in 1994 the abuser paid 10;000.000 dollar to silence his acts. And continued in acting as an enlightened god. For the next 20 and more years, denial and silencing was part of his game. Probably convinced of the fact he was so enlightened that he could follow his instincts blindly. I guess even Trump would doubt himself more, than this guy did. Until now he never apologized : it's still revictiming stuff: talking about "allegations" and suggesting "students" are still not understanding his holy wisdom. Even now some lama's are accusing followers for his illnees : those who broke their samaya (eternal obedience) to this abuser, would be giving "negative karma" and therefore the responsiblity the cancer he's receiving treatment for. If this would be a victim-blaming contest... The guy didn't even write his own best-selling book. It turnes out to be a salesman wearing monk clothes, with more western scholar hours that his little buddhist training. And I know; hard to believe. There must be a middle way...
