At this performance, Sohyang was so sick with pneumonia. Just after this stage she left the live scene for about 2yrs cuz of health issues. She came back couple of yrs ago and she's fine now.

In the days leading up to this performance she had been hospitalized with pneomonia which she often suffers,after beating cancer when she was 20 years old. The doctors had forbidden her to sing but she didn't want to disappoint the audience because she NOT sing for fame but for comfort people who are going through difficult times. About that one note you've mentioned: At the time of this performance, she was very sick and her condition was at its worst... So the 'flip'. She said later all she wanted was to be able to finish it without her voice breaking up and was so relieved afterward. The lyric of this song matches perfectly the struggles she was going thru at the time.

I never say she is the best vocalist in the world. But it is undeniable that she is one of the best female vocalists in the world. Leaving aside her likes and dislikes for the color of her voice, her singing skills are almost perfect, and she sometimes even uses the twang technique, which can be criticized as nasal sound from antis, without hesitation. People are very passionate about her high notes, but every time I hear her songs, it's even more touching because it feels like she's singing right in front of me just for me. What I truly appreciate is that she, who is now so famous, still sings with her best, even on many small stages like in front of an apartment or at a village festival. She gets more respect because she is still practicing that she is satisfied that her song can give someone comforts and peace, as she has always said. Those would be the real difference that sets her apart from other singers who have a desire to be famous.

That is just wonderful isn't it? She is so humble and shares her gifts with everyone. I think a lot of singers would prefer the smaller stages and the more intimate venues however then often the fans get upset that the tickets are all sold out ;( She is really wonderful and I can not wait for her to come to Europe.

Zoe, it is not so much that So Hyang wishes she could have finished the song with a fuller final note. She actually had pneumonia when she sang this song. Her doctor did not want her to even speak. So delivering a performance like she did here is almost a miracle.

I remember a performance she did in early 2020 that they put up on KZbin, and then took it down again, IIRC, shortly thereafter. She had a hard time even smiling, which is almost unheard of for So Hyang.

Sohyang couldn't have children with ovarian cancer when she was young... I could always hear the voice of God when I heard her singing The over-scheduling and inclinations of the station's competition program she sang this song, until just before she was on stage in her very bad throat, she was torn between giving up and standing on stage...Despite the dissuasion of people around her that she might never be able to sing again due to severe pneumonia, she eventually sang this song on stage and couldn't see her for a very, very long time …It's been on the air again recently, but this could have been her last performance.crying

It's interesting how you kept this reaction on two separate tracks - one as a vocal aficionado eager to take in the technical excellence and beautiful artistry from the performance, another as a dedicated vocal coach in offering analysis and advices for those interested in enhancing one's understanding and skill to sing better. While there are other vocal coaches, you maintained both tracks so distinctly and yet so affectionally without blurring the focus of each. I was also intrigued by your remark on the finishing belt. This rendition of Sohyang's "You Raise Me Up" is so mesmerizing that I was emotionally spent about half the way through the performance. I could only sit back and marvel at the rest of the stage in admiration. However, I did get an inkling that the final note wasn't as grand as I anticipated, if only inferred from her past performances on IM2. As you mentioned, who would however dwell on that after what we just experienced from her? And later on I learned that Sohyang was suffering severe pneumonia at the time. I could even more readily to dismiss the notion of potential betterment of the song because of her health reasons. However, purely from the artistic perspective, without regard to the circumstances, I found your comment about Sohyang's would-be dissatisfaction with the final note resonating with my gut reaction. It is curious whether Sohyang would choose differently should her vocal condition weren't a consideration. Regardless, I felt blessed for having heard this masterpiece by Sohyang and truly enjoyed your reaction video. Thanks for your analysis.

Why blow out your instrument when you can invoke almost if not the same emotions from her audience, especially if you’re not feeling well? I think she said many times that she really valued longevity and that motivated her to be a healthy, very technical singer.

Yes that’s why she did this song this way! She was recovering from pneumonia! She was rather down though and really believed this would be her last performance! Thank God , it wasn’t and then she entered, King of Masked Singer, and she realized she did have a strong following and was moving people !

Ohh, Sohyang! Thank you for checking this out. Unbelievable she was so sick there and not even allowed to talk. If you're searching for a performance where she really wasn't happy but which is great (it's my favourite of hers next to Love Poem), then go with the highly emotional "Where are you", the climax is just heartbreaking. The stage is so underrated but it's so good, so powerful. Her tone is a bit fuller there. (you should go with the Vimeo version then, the KZbin one is cut with a talking part in the middle). ☺️ And have you heard her rapping yet? Like Day Day on KOMS or Begin again? :D And still waiting for Park Kiyoung, she was twice at immortal Songs the last two weeks again. Sure Spring Rain or Yeonan Pier are her signatures but she nails the notes here too. Her mix is ridiculous. Even though she's headier. Please check her out. Spring Rain or her new one: (not her best stage but it shows a good part of her range, especially in the high ones). It's hard to recommend something since she's originally a rock singer but does every genre. And nails everything. From jazz to opera, some funk. She was singing here while sick and thought this was going to be her last performance as she had pneumonia so many times she thought of giving up singing. She disappeared after this and regained her health. She has come back really strong over 2020-21. My guess is she wasn't able to deliver a good belt due to the pneumonia so she mixed.

There are a couple of singers everyone is so familiar with and I too agree with everyone that they are amazing at what they do, So Hyang and Morisette are two of the finest and I am crazy about them. My all-time favorites are ones that hardly anyone ever reacts to and they are Cho Yong-Jin aka ALi and Keiko Necesario. ALi I have known much longer and completely love her singing voice as she is able to sing any genre from pop to Pansori and all beautifully mixed if I am not mistaken she is known as the crying voice of Korea. She knows exactly how to make anyone cry with her amazing voice, IMO there is no one better. I feel she is a very dramatic and sorrowful singer I have 213 of her MV on my channel and I never get tired of watching, one who loves to add skits to her performances, but one who uses her emotion and passion so well. As a long time Sohyang I don’t think this is her best performance by far. It’s still a great performance by a ‘normal’ vocalists standards but I think a bit of that Sohyang ‘magic’ is missing. She shouldn’t have even been singing as she hadn’t recovered from her latest bout of pneumonia & the doctor had advised her not to sing, but typical of Sohyang she didn’t want to disappoint the audience, so she went ahead.you can see that she looks tired & as if she’s lost weight in her face.

At the time of the performance, Sohyang had severe pneumonia and was advised not to broadcast. Sohyang who conquered cancer at the age of 19. At the time of the song, Sohyang stopped her activities for two years after the performance and started her activities again.

One way you can tell she wasn't totally happy with this performance is that while YRMU is part of her regular set list she's never actually used this arrangement again (although recently she's incorporated the section where she's vocalizing with the flute.) As others have said she was quite ill in this time period and it's a testament to her skill as a performer that she got through it as well as she did. You wisely warned your students not to sing when they're sick. If you listen to this again, note that she had pneumonia and wasn't supposed to sing. (She did take an extended rest afterwords.) It's a wonderful performance but you can see the stress in her face and hear it a few times in her voice. That may be part of the reason for the heavy sound processing at the beginning, but then, they may have just wanted to create.that environmental effect.

So hyang one of my favorite female vocalists. Her performance of “ everyone” is beyond amazing. But I have a request that you react to her closest and best friend, “Park Ki Young”, I prefer Park Ki Young because they have about the same vocal range but Park Ki Young is a tad more versatile and can belt them with equal emotional impact and power in rock, pop, soul, jazz flamenco, and classical ( opera). And her vibrato is a bit more rounder. A few of my favorites that are worthy of reacting to: ( either privately or publicly) KZbin: “I dreamt I dwelt in Marble Halls” ( 5:02 duration. A rare hidden gem that she performs the way it was intended to be performed : as an opera in English. Anya’s Version is the standard but sung more as a ballad but Park Ki Young opera style takes you to church and beyond. “ Nella Fantasia “ ( 4:08 best version ever and I’ve watched and listened to all the world class vocalists perform this) “ Goodbye a word that’s too short” ( click 5:08 one she’s in the celestial realm and sustains the last note a long time. An Soul / R& B masterpiece. “wound” ( emotionally impactful 5:57 duration with the blue strobe lighting. Another amazing soulful performance ) “Hit hee Park Ki Young” (one of my favorites 5:18 duration) So hyang” receives a lot more reactors and reactions than Park Ki Young” because of her ability to sing many popular American songs in English which she performs with emotional impact. But please don’t judge a vocalist by the number of requests you receive-altho your fans are usually right. But my singing friends unanimously agree that both So Hyang and Park Ki Young are not only world class vocalists but equal in talent. What I’m trying to say is I believe Park Ki Young deserves far more reactions and I promise you and your subscribers who love So Hyang ( and I am among them) that you won’t be disappointed listening to a Park Ki Young song. They are both about the same age ( early 40s but look amazing for their age!) and the closest and best of friends. Please start your Park Ki Young Journey with 2 opera-like songs“ Nella Fantasia” ( click first vid 4:08 duration) which I consider the best rendition I have ever heard of this song and I have heard all the world class vocalists perform it) You’ve just begun your journey. Staying with semi-opera please consider next a rare masterpiece titled “I dreamt I Dwelt In Marble Halls Park” ( 5:02). Hi Zoe.. I never got the reminder, so I kept checking ur videos but nothing (so I assumed it was blocked). BUT finally thought to check your SoHyang playlist & YAY … found it & not blocked! Are you aware of this? This was a show paying tribute to Shane Filian from Westlife who covered You Raise me Up in their 2005 platinum album. Not sure if ya know backstory.. ♥️ SoHyang had severe pneumonia during this perf. She in fact could barely speak, but left hospital against Dr’s advice to do what she likely thought was her LAST perf. She actually begins in prayer & cont making the song 1 long prayer as she praises the Lord no matter what was to come. This is why I 💯 believe we see something special happen… as SoHyabg takes a leap of faith & soars! FYI, that white man is Westlife's Shane Filan. This performance was an opportunity to perform the immortal song 'You Raise Me Up', and the famous singer who sang 'You Raise Me Up', Shane Finan of Westlife, was invited to enjoy the performance together. However, this performance almost did not happen because Sohyang, who was supposed to sing this song, developed severe pneumonia symptoms. In this situation, Sohyang went on stage praying to her God and asking for her voice to come out, and she finished her performance very well. I don't know if you know, but it is said that You Raise Me Up has been arranged into about 165,000 versions. After this performance, Brendan Graham, the original composer of this song, who heard Sohyang's You Raise Me Up, found Sohyang's contact information through the Korean embassy. If you love SoHuang, then you might want to take a look at Hua Chenyu (also know as Hua Hua). There are great singers, and then there are great artists. Hua Hua is the definition of a great artist. His skill sets include: flawlessly mixing genres within songs, exceptional stage presence, delivery of emotion, brilliantly recomposing songs, and composing his own masterpieces. In some of his songs for a competition, he has to rewrite covers within 24 hours, and he developed new masterpieces.
