It was the song that gave me an opportunity to find her for the first time three years ago. This video was recommended because of an unknown KZbin algorithm and I was bored because I didn't really listen to pop songs, I pressed it once and I fell into her trap. After that I almost became a lunatic. I searched all her songs and found and read all her interviews and writings. The sleeping time was such a waste. I'm in my fifties. I really didn't know I'd be as enthusiastic as a teenager. I've barely come to my senses lately. The biggest reason I admire her is not only her amazing singing ability, I admire her consistency. Her goal might be to build a kingdom of God on earth. In an interview with a pastor in 2018, she said: "In my third year of high school (1996), I went to a church retreat and met God personally. I was really crazy then. Should I explain that everything shines, the world looks different, and that I am in the world, but it feels like I don't belong to the world?" After that experience, she decided to serve God her whole life. But she doesn't conduct aggressive missions. Just she has been keeping the promise she swore in her teens for 30 years without wavering. Whenever I look at her, I only bow my head to the greatness of human belief.

This song was originally written and recorded by the Irish/Norwegian duo, Secret Garden, in 2001. In 2003, the song became an international hit for Josh Groban. In 2005, Shane Filan and his band, Westlife, recorded the song. He is the man featured in the audience throughout the performance.

As a huge So Hyang fan of more than 10 years I would put this performance in the top ten but definitely not in my personal top 5. My top 5 is Bridge Over Troubled Water, Everyone, Dream, Home and Arirang Alone. Many So Hyang fan's lists will be totally different since So Hyang has easily over 50 phenomenal live performances to choose from that are in the legendary status. Other than Dimash I don't know any singers that can boast of having more than 20 spectacular and amazing live performances since so many singers are scared to sing live.

Her goal is to comfort people who are going through difficult times. When I listened to her amazing and breathtaking performance, I couldn't stop shedding tears in my eyes. Because it reminded me of mother who passed away after suffering from incurable disease for a long time. She is just amazing and looks like an angel. She is a great humanist before a great vocalist. Thank you for the reaction to the amazing So Hyang. It is established that she had just come off of a bout with pneumonia and doctors advised her not to sing this performance. But she felt she would be letting people down and went on with it. Though this is an incredible performance you can tell she was slightly strained, especially when you listen to some of her countless other otherworldly performances. No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of. The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh? The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to really pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message. Sohyang was named by her grandmother, whom she believes God inspired with the name even though neither her parents nor grandmother were Christians. Her name means "enjoy the light" as people have correctly informed me. Sohyang's favourite movie star is Brad Pitt. Like "duh," eh? What woman doesn't love Brad Pitt? Ha, ha! 😎 Sohyang is a 100% self-taught singer except for a handful of sessions with Seth Riggs, which she didn't talk about in the interview I learned this from, so I think she had her Seth Riggs lessons after 2009 when this interview was recorded. She said she spent time with one of the producers of Boyz II Men while on vacation in California and learned either vocal technique or audio recording technique or both because he had a home recording studio. When she watches movies she doesn't take her hubby along because she wants to concentrate on the film without anyone interrupting or talking to her. Sorry hubby, but you can be so distracting and annoying at the movies! 😝 Sohyang likes action movies! She carries her Bible with her most places. It is an English New International Version and she tries to read five chapters a day, because it helps her stay fresh on her English. Oh yes, Sohyang wanted to be involved in musicals on stage but was offered the role of Carmen, which she turned down because Carmen was a prostitute. It sounded like she was offered prostitute roles repeatedly, so she more or less gave up on anything operatic. Though, of course, she did appear in "The Sound of Music." She is just one of those naturally wholesome women, and I think that is one of the reasons we like her. 😇❤ Sohyang is also analytic to the nth degree! She will listen to a song she likes over and over until she is satisfied she knows it inside out. The bass line, the drums, the vocals. She keeps going until she has almost worn out the recording. Well, she didn't say that last part but it is pretty obvious that she knows her music and when she decides to cover a song, she is going to cover it like it has never been covered before! And don't we all know it!?!! 🎸👍💘🎸

She is singing to God. What makes this MASTER CLASS performance by the PHENOMENAL So Hyang, even more impressive, she IS NOT well here. Some time prior to this event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from one of her numerous bouts with pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her physicians advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, she believed her singing career was over, and she wanted to sing one last time. After this performance, she was readmitted to the hospital. So Hyang disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. She returned in 2020. From her return through present day, she has proven her technique is ROCK SOLID. Her vocal range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE. She turned 45 years old on 04/05/23, and it appears she is aging backwards.

A couple of things, firstly, at the beginning, I believe it was a treble recorder, which is the size above the standard recorder we all learn in school. Secondly, she was actually I’ll during this performance & had been advised not to perform by the doctor because she wasn’t yet recovered from her latest bout of pneumonia ( disastrous for a singer) but she didn’t want to disappoint the people who had come to see her. As a Sohyang admirer of many years, I adore this woman, I don’t think this is one of her best performances vocally. I think that anyone really familiar with her can see that she looks very tired & looks like she has lost weight in her face. I don’t know why this would be the most requested but just because I can name many more performances that put this in the shade but I do realise also that this is my opinion & not everybody thinks the same so some people, like yourselves , may not have seen the quantity of ‘mind blowing’ performances that I have therefore they have little to compare it to but having said that it is still an amazing performance by anybody else’s standard, it’s just that this lady has so many exceptional performances to choose from. FYI the ‘English/American’ guy the camera kept going to is actually Irish, he’s the lead singer in an Irish boyband called ‘Westlife’ & they had a massive no1 hit in the UK & all over Europe with the same song, albeit a version that was more like the original. I like your comments about the reactions of the crowd & I always wonder what it would be like to experience a Sohyang performance in person because we watch her from afar via video yet she still has the ability somehow to ‘move’ us through a screen so it’s hard to imagine how she would make you feel if you were actually on the same space as her. I know how she makes me feel now so I’m not sure that my heart could actually cope with seeing her live.

I just left a recommendation under your 'pinned' message. It is a bit different than what we just watched. I think I referenced something about scalding your eyeballs. She knows how to push the performance line. I also want to re-iterate that her back-up singers are amazing. What they do to make these performances keep moving is special. Some of the harmonies they produce are as beautiful a line of music that anyone can sing. There runs behind her solos are so intricate and delicious to hear, you almost want to hear them do a song on there own kind of like Voctave. Great Reaction You Two! As someone mentioned she Was told by her Doctor not to talk for a couple days and absolutely no singing! However SoHyang knew somebody in the crowd might need her to take away some of their stress and may be counting on her so she must sing! Did you notice the man in the suit the camera kept panning onto?! That is Shane, the vocalist from Westlife! They recorded this song after Nosh Groben and had a mass hit with it! He was invited as the episode was on Westlifes Hits or Originals ! He was shook,by this Performance! How about a fairly recent Performance well fall of 2020 from Begin Again Korea! An Jazz Classic from 1959, made Famous by Johnny Mathis, Sarah Vaughan even Ella Fitzgerald! My favourite was Johnny Mathis till I heard SoHyang Perform it, on this made for TV Busking Show during the Pandemic! She can sing anything !
