What is great about this set up is that the plants that grow on top of the sheet are completely separated from the ground and its condition does not affect the plants (although I’d think some sorts of radiation will still penetrate). So it works even when the soil is otherwise considered unfit for normal way of agriculture.

.In real-life application, you first cover the ground with a sheet (black in the clip) that is study and not penetrable. Then you lay a web of tubes on top that slowly disperses liquid fertilizer. This is then covered by a sheet of felt so the liquid fertilizer spreads evenly. Now you put on this magic film and then plant seeds on top of it.

I might try to add subtitles, but for now, here’s the gist of the story. ----- Dr. Mori developed a saran-wrap-lookalike film which could revolutionalize agriculture. It is made of hydrogel, the ultra-absorbing material used in diapers. He carefully calibrated the size of the holes in it; it lets water and nutrients go through but not bacterias or viruses because they are bigger in size

This means you can grow plants this way in the regions that were hit by the 3/11 disaster in Japan, even if the ground contains debris, was soaked in salt water by tsunami, or has harmful bacteria. They have successfully executed this method in Oman and also in space.
