Ryojun Shionuma is the head priest of Jigenji temple, located in the Akiho district of Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture. He became the second person in history to complete the Sennichi Kaihogyo (the Omine Thousand-Day Circumambulation Practice), which involves a 48-kilometer climb repeated every day for one thousand days. In the following year, he completed the practice of Shimugyo (the Four Deprivations), which involves reciting two hundred thousand mantras for nine days straight, with no food, water, sleep, or lying down. Having completed such intense practices, Ryojun Shionuma shares his insights into the three “mindsets” which we should all have, and which he believes will eventually help connect the world.

若い頃と違い、年齢を重ねると苦労の経験も増え、苦労がある度正しいあり方を考えさせられます。自分の人生を振り返る。人が幸せを感じる瞬間は、お金でも贅沢でもありません。いつも、感謝の心、素直な心、反省する心、相手に対する思いやりの心、人を許す心、目の前にいる人を大切にする心それを続けていれば、生きているための真の幸せを感じ続けて苦労がなくなると知りました。自身を見直せるきっかけを有り難うございました。

素晴らしい和合の精神をありがとうございます。民族の基本になる精神をもって生まれたことに感謝です。つねに敵をつくる事でマウンティングしてきた人類の歴史を反省し、人間としての生き様とは何なのかを追求してゆくことが必要です。ありがとう。

全体的にこのお話は、難易度の高い登山に憧れていたShionuma君の冒険＆サクセスストーリーとして楽しく拝聴致しました。ただ、他人に敬意・思いやりを持つ事が大事と言う「実感」を会得されたらしいので、それは素晴らしいと思いました。私のような凡人には、そのような簡単な行（心がけ？）ですら、1000日やそこらで達成できそうにありません（笑）まだまだ修行中の身で御座います。精進致します。

私は特に宗教というものに興味がありません。このお話も最初は典型的な仏教のきれい事か、という気持ちで聞いていましたが、静かで淡々としていながら、その中にほんのりと体温を感じられるような柔らかい声に耳を傾けるうちに、自分の心がだんだん癒されていくのを感じました。表現しがたい包み込むような力を感じ、涙がこぼれました。

It is commonly understood that politeness is a very important concept in Japan. As a foregner it is easy to be percived as rude. However, on many parts of the word a more direct form of communication is accepted than from what is customary in Japan: There are several issues related to Japan's past that makes millions and millions of people in countries like Korea, China and Taiwan rather dissapointed. Mostly it is felt that these issues are not only unresolved but even denied by people in responsible positions in Japan. This is my question: How does Japan plan to share harmony with the world when the terrible wounds that were caused by the Japanese occupation in the neighboring countries are completely and perfectly ignored as if they have never happened? I greatly appretiate that I could express my opinnion and concern on this forum. Thank You... I sincerely wish Japan finds a way to deal with it's past and moves forward honestly and bravely also by addressing existing issues in Japanese society such as gender unequality, high sucide rate and extreme low birth rate. Sometimes the best way of teaching is teaching through example. THE WORLD IS LISTENING THANK YOU

Thank You for Your response. Sadly I do not understand exactely. I understand the characters "atomic bomb". What happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki is truly a great tragedy that everyone in this world should be sad about. In Europe countries have been much more successful in cooperation and forgiving than China, Korea and Japan. I wish these countries find the way to harmony. I am sorry to say that this monk does not always give the impression of a fully grown up person. An average Japanese worker or farmer seems to have more sincerity and common sence. What I understand that he has the ability to read. Even that ability should be greatly valued. There are still many people who cannot read and write. Those people should take the example of this monk and learn to read and write. Thank You

Great talk, but, unless I misunderstood something, 1000 days is 3 years, not 4 months. That aside, he is an amazing guy.

To my understanding, he seems to have walked only 4 months a year (May 3rd to September 3rd) with a total of 1000 days in about 8 years.

おばちゃんに…の所。いつも涙が出てしまう。私なら大変なんだよ!！と態度に出てしまう。出してしまうだろうなー。私は思いやりのつもりでも、中々相手に分かって貰えない。私の人間力の無さかなぁ?皆やって貰って当たり前という顔をするよ！「私(=相手)に価値がある」から?大事に気づかってもらって当然という態度だよ。たった今だってそうだよ。家族宛(私は全く関係ない)に品物を持って来て渡してくれというから、預かって。。。わざわざ来たから、大事に飲もうと取っておいた特別なコーヒー1瓶上げた。その人、黙って受け取って、お礼の一言もないよ。愚痴を言うくらいならやらなきゃよかったんだね！いつもこんな感じ。なんでかな？

Is that Japanese with actual Japanese or potentially simplified Chinese subs? That's just bloody useless, now isn't it? If you talk about "connecting the world" it would not hurt to make most of the world actually understand the message. Addressing only 110.000.000 people would be embarrassing under that tagline.

人は簡単に知らない人を批判したりバカにしたりします。どれ程この様な人が立派なのか分かりませんが，塩沼大阿闍梨の生死を掛けた，この過酷な経験が当たり前のこと感謝，ありがとう，すみません心を広く等を，こころの底から学ばれた事で，私も今一度自分の人世を振り返り自分に取り入れなければいけない，と思いました。塩沼先生の，私などには到底考えられない御経験に心から心から感謝申し上げます。

祈りという行為はその人自身の自己完結な行動だと考えていましたが、思いを噛み締めて祈ることでそれが行動に繋がっていくのだと感じました。だから共に祈る事によって、人々が平和について考え行動に繋がっていくのだと、この話を通じて感じました。

僕はこのお坊さんのなされた修行と心掛けはとてもリスペクトしている。話も悪いものじゃ無い。というのを前提に思った事を書く。お話は宗教家らしく過去によく聞いた感じの話だ。世界平和、隣人愛、どれも当たり前で素晴らしい。しかし、宗教が広まり2000年経っても平和はいまだに訪れていない。第一次大戦、第二次世界大戦、またそれ以外の戦争からアメリカ？の学者による研究で、民主主義国同士はあまり戦争をしない、独裁国家が戦争をする事が多いというデータを出したそうだ。そこには貿易も絡み、貿易が強く絡むと戦争もしにくいというデータも出ているそうだ。これから戦争確率みたいなものも計算できるらしい。ただ、祈るだけでは平和は訪れない。国家間の友好には仕組みが大切で、そういう事を念頭にこういうお話を聞く方がいいと思う
