Climate change is a complex phenomenon. One of the things we already understand about it is that we have unbalanced the carbon cycle, having more emissions into the atmosphere than sequestration. We know that we will need a combination of approaches to balance back this cycle. A big opportunity for sequestration is to improve the way we do agriculture and therefore sequester carbon in our soils. This is not a task that we are to relegate to farmers, they can achieve it, but as a society, we need to support them, the first step is to learn how our food is grown and why we care. Bernie is a proud husband and father of four, and a passionate Argentinian agronomist driven by excellence and service. He has more than 15 years of experience in agriculture working in different capacities-from technical advisory to enabling farmers in Precision Ag and Conservative Crop Production, to developing business, operational management, and emerging technologies both in Latin America and the United States. With a strong sense of moral responsibility over his area of expertise, Bernie works every day to ensure continuous progress toward sustainable food production systems. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

One thing we absolutely know is that, if we don't stop animal agriculture, we will not avoid a climate crisis. Vast amounts of land are cleared for grazing, one of the ways we remove the carbon machines mentioned in this talk. Also, crops to feed farmed animals are usually monocropped, therefore generally involving massive tilling, also mentioned in this talk. If we all switched to a plant based diet we'd save about 75% of current farm land. That land could them be returned to nature with trees and other native plants.
