I actually this new version is a bit of an improvement. The old/original Scout had a tiny button compass vs the larger compass in the new version, a notable improvement. You can tell new vs old at a glance- the old had the SOL tag in blue in the corner vs the black tag on the new. I have a few of the older ones (got a good deal on 'em) and feel they're pretty good for the money. Not everything you need by any means but a good foundation to build on. Add a bit of real cordage, a Mini BIC, a small knife and a water bag and you're in pretty good shape.

This would also be a great little kit to throw in a bug out bag. Say you leave where you have set up base camp to go get food. Take this kit with you in your pocket so just in case you get in a bad situation you have something to help get through. Thank you for the great review.

I would have left out the knife as we all carry one anyway and you can't forget to take it out when flying. I would add matches or replace the plastic sparkwheel with a Clipper lighter as they sometimes break. The Clipper lighter has a replaceable sparkwheel so even when out of fuel you can still use that as a separate lighter.

That is a decent starter kit. Before these were sold I built something like this 15 years ago lol. I used the UST tube tarp which I though was cool since you zip it up and could stay off the ground if it was damp with that design. I still have it but I use a rip stop nylon tarp that is less weight and more packable.

I have one of those tube tarps in my old camp pack still lol. Thanks for checking out my video!

This one just came up in my feed. You went from less than 500 to over 1,800 subs in four months. Outstanding! I like the “survival kit” videos as I’ve been making kits like these as a hobby for over 25 years. I like to see what different companies, and individuals, put in their kits. I liked the add-ins you used here. 👍🏻👍🏻

Ive been using these kits for years. Great items. The compasses wear out after a year or two.

Very good video. To the version with the added things, without thinking too much about it, I think I would replace the sparker with a bic lighter, I would add a few feet of bankline, a SAK or multitool instead of the knife, (if both things do not fit.) I think it has potential and thinking carefully you can substantially improve the original kit to adapt it to your own needs

@@Matt18.6 while I agree the it’s very low quality, it’s still better than nothing. You’d give your right arm for this in an emergency situation if you had nothing else.
