I listened for it but I couldn't hear it - and I did try about 6x. I might try with some quality headphones. I really want to hear it now. I feel I might be losing touch or something.

I live in the deep south and I have been thinking of getting a Simi trailer and painting it black and put a fan and a dehumidifier in it as a wood kiln

Great job. I've been air drying lumber for many years Plan to build this. You mentioned drying what you need for the project at hand. Question. If you kiln dry, and don't use immediately, but store in an outdoor coveted shed(East Texas), will the MC go back up to 14% range that I get with air drying?
@savageboner6 жыл бұрын
It will go back up to average humidity where the wood is being stored.

Interesting presentation. I knew of an old fellow many years ago who made a solar kiln using an old propane tank painted black, and using an old dairy vacuum pump. I saw some 2" x 14" x 12' cedar blanks he cured in that kiln without a check, warp, or crack. I was never able to find out about the longer term stability of the wood.

Hi there. what is right type of roofing material? Dual wall is better because of thermal isolation but on the other hand "wave" type should catch a lot more sunlights because of wave shape there will not be so much reflection in morning and evening like with straight material, right? Thank you, Tomas

In the south, all homes were built using green oak. They did this on purpose so that when the wood shrinks, it would aerate the home and allow it to breathe in the heat/humidity of the summer. Of course, this was before AC.

My guess is yes. Why would you want to go that low. Without any moisture I think the wood be weak.

how do you keep a solar kiln from case hardening the wood?

@@bierbarrel the wood I used was out of the solar kiln for at least two years. it twisted and turned when cut. show some examples of furnature made from the lumber. then put in a heated and air conditioned house. that is why I pay for Kiln dried Lumber
@TERRORoftheLORD2 жыл бұрын
@@dc9apu How the lumber is cut will affect the finished product more than the drying. Kiln drying bad lumber will produce bad kiln dried lumber.

I am taking down 3 large red oak trees, this is not time dated, I can wait a year or two if need be. I want to cut rounds 2 inches thick, no larger then 48 inches in diameter. I have been told that only a vacuum wood kiln will stop the rounds from splitting. Is this true or can a air or solar kiln dry the the rounds without splitting?
@fckmunch2 жыл бұрын
Did you ever find your answer?
@TERRORoftheLORD2 жыл бұрын
It will split no matter how its dried. The inside and outside cookie dry at different rates and something needs to give.

It's stupid that companies have to tell us that we're personally responsible for what happens to us. It's obvious. I blame the courts for letting people get away with the most frivolous and ridiculous lawsuits.

Sorry to ask: Why must lumber be cut in to boards BEFORE Klinning?
@gwinnettwoodworkers6 жыл бұрын
Air dried wood takes around 1 year per inch of wood thickness, A 4 inch thick board would take around 4 years to dry. Slicing the wood to thinner layers helps it dry faster. Even with a kiln a thicker board takes much longer to dry.

If you live in a desert it IS possible to bring MC down to 6% with air drying.
@ThePaulv122 жыл бұрын
3yo post lol, but there is an average relative humidity chart for all countries. Anyhow say you live in the desert and the average relative humidity is 5% then you can get it down to near that. However consider wood is a natural substance that breathes. If you lived in a 12% average relative humidity environment and you dried it to 8% then when you take it outside the kiln it's going to eventually get to more or less 12%. Point is don't dry it lower than your area average if used externally as it wastes time. For internal use dry it lower for sure.
