Question, I am looking for a circuit to run an .8 amp pump off of a battery charged by a solar panel and maybe add a timer in it later. Have you ever done anything like that?

Nice & simple. Most chargers use constant current until some voltage is reached. That would be a usefull design. I guess you would have to sense the battery voltage and adjust your charging circuit to provide a constant current while ramping up the voltage.

If I would like to make a 6V solar module charging to a 4.8V Battery what should I adjust it? The purpose is to do a primary school project of RC solar cell together with the rechargeable battery.

It should work.

Do we need a similar circuitry if we have input from an SMPS for charging 48v(series 12x4) SLA Battery? I had tried charging the battery pack directly from the SMPS, and I'm not sure its working as per expectations.

I am not sure about what would happen if the battery voltage is higher than 12V. My charge controller keeps the 12V battery floating at 14.1V max. If you had 14.1V at the B+ going to the battery, then you would have 0.5V dropped across the 2N2907 emitter to collector, 10V across the zener which would leave 3.6V across the 560 Ohm resistor. What if for some reason the battery voltage went higher than 14.1V. Could the excess voltage damage the Arduino? How would you insure that the input voltage going to the Arduino would never exceed 5V? This is a great video. However, this makes me think that I need to understand transistor and mosfet switching circuit operation better in order to understand what you are saying.

It is designed for up to 18 volts. Read the spec sheet.

Hi, I am having a go at this circuit, but having trouble with the zener diode part. The transistor switches on when base is high, and the circuit works, but the Zener in the top configuration with black line end to V+ won't clamp the voltage down as you describe, if Vin is 20V, 20V is seen on the gate. Its the same if I take the mosfet out and just try the transistor switch on its own also. Any advice

what is the voltage across the zener when switched on? What is the value of RZ? If there isn't a S-G difference of at least 5V the MOSFET won't switch on.

@@LewisLoflin Thanks for your reply. I found a similar circuit that showed a resistor across the 12V zener. This seems to make it work with clamping gate voltage down. Not sure if I have a different Zener, but works now using a BCX38C was the transistor. I used much smaller values. current limiting resistor os 270ohm, resistor over zener is 1K. supports switching up to about 1Khz. If we need to switch much faster is the only solution a proper Fet driver for the job?

@@DanSohan I was going to suggest that.

about the last circuit shown.. do you have a full schematic of the charger with those. and arduino code to support it maybe ?

Hi. So a pwm charge controller is just to keep the voltage at a constant level? It doesn't disconnect when the battery is fully charged and etc? With that is it correct to say that PWM charge controllers are used with series design.
@LewisLoflin6 жыл бұрын
No PWM limits the charge current. The Arduino reads the battery voltage with PWM off and leaves it off when the battery is at charge voltage - 12.8 to 13.6 volts.

Lewis Loflin so with a pwm charge controller, i dont need a series or shunt charge controller?
