Would love to see more off-grid setups like you are doing here. Thinking about going off-grid more and getting out and enjoying the backcountry would love to see how he would work off the power grid

Glad to hear it! I’ll probably to a proper camping trip re-do of my original idea sometime, the idea of an extended trip with full power for my office to work remotely sounds really fun.

Thanks so much! It was too bad my original camping trip didn’t pan out with the wildfires, the idea was to live out there for a while and make the full video over a week. Hopefully next year I can make it happen!
@marlenakauer52625 ай бұрын
@@joshfenn yeah definitely! I hope you get to too! Definitely grateful wildfires are rarely something we rarely have to worry about in the Blue Ridge. But safety first! Not sure if you already have one but highly recommend a garmin Inreach or something similar. I hiked all through my 20s solo but when I turned thirty and got married I finally got one. I was out on a trail in winter and realized I’d be getting back to my car a little later than I expected and there were some slick rocks on the trail I almost rolled my ankle on I realized if something happened and I was out there I could probably survive the night but my wife would be so worried! Really nice peace of mind to have it with me now anytime I’m doing more than 2-3 miles or if the conditions are dicey at all.
@joshfenn5 ай бұрын
The inreach has been so great to have in the kit! I picked one up a few years ago when I started doing more substantial solo hikes, well worth it for my own piece of mind but my wife’s too. Definitely better safe than sorry, I love being outdoors but try and mitigate my risks as much as possible.

For outdoor setups, it is necessary to have some sort of overhead tent or sunbrella to provide shade.
@joshfenn5 ай бұрын
A tent would have been so nice for this setup, important not to overheat the computers too

Great video - love the change over your normal videos. Content fits in well with what i'm currently polishing off and that is using my phone and tablet for a complete setup. Just got to get an off grid way of charging batteries and a replacement headset. I run android and windows rather than apple.

I’ve got a heater! Actually brought a big box fan with me but I didn’t set it up since I wasn’t staying overnight and didn’t want to mess up the audio

That’s great. I think the only thing that would make it better is if you had Starlink.

I know! I checked into it and it was way too expensive for a one-off thing like this, but it’d be so great to have

So I’m near a beach, I’ve been trying to build a similar configuration but more for programming at the beach. Not as crazy of a concept haha. I do have the same pocket router, I intend to use it for smart home purposes at the beach.

That’s awesome! Almost made this a beach-side video instead but was worried about the sand getting into everything - probably really great though

Wouldn't call this idea silly. I really enjoy unconventional ideas like this. I've been thinking about doing something like this in the garage instead of having an electrician come out to add more outlets. The clamp as the headphones stand seems so obvious (walking over to get one out of the garage right now). Great video!!
@joshfenn5 ай бұрын
Something like this would be great for the garage! I’ve been using the battery more and more at home too as I push my home office circuit, I’m renting and can’t make any electrical changes unfortunately. Love having clamps around though, I use them constantly for all sorts of things. Appreciate the support on this one!

Thanks for the video. Wondering what kind of wattage you are pulling from all the devices/appliances? I'm looking to power a shed for a home office and looking into a similar setup. Thanks!
@joshfennАй бұрын
It depends so much on the specific devices, but I was pulling around 200-400w most of the time for this setup when the computer was running. I’d recommend grabbing a meter to test everything you want in the setup beforehand and see - should help make the decisions a bit easier.

How many hours does it last with all your devices
@joshfenn4 ай бұрын
Depends a lot since the wattage varies so much when gaming or working, but with the solar the charge stayed pretty level the whole day so pretty much indefinitely with solar and probably a full day or two under max load without?

Great Video. Glamping with Gaming and Productivity (or not). If only Anker would make a bug repellent system to make camping bug free.

Thanks! Would love a really effective bug repellant setup - the flextail/thermacell/Nitecore units usually work pretty well for mosquitos and flies

Hey i have a question which anker would best fit to power my console (ps5) i only need it to really power my console as i get power outage on my game
@joshfenn5 ай бұрын
You’d probably want to aim for a 500w or larger and you should be good. The Anker 535 is $299 right now with 512wh capacity, that should do the trick but probably would only last for a couple of hours. The c1000 or above would get longer usage, something like mine could probably run all day. Alternatively, they make ups power supplies that aren’t really designed for use like this but help protect from bad power, the battery would just give enough time to power everything down in the case of a power outage

Thanks for the great content! I think you should do any video idea that interests you. If people don’t enjoy it, that’s too bad for them.
@joshfenn5 ай бұрын
Totally agree! That’s how this idea came to be - definitely won’t be a crowd favorite performance wise if these first couple of hours are any indication but I had fun with it. Specifically for the ebike idea, Ive been really wanting to test one but haven’t been sure how I want to make the video quite yet. Gauging interest is just fun for me, I ultimately have final say but like the idea that we’re all part of a community around here
@deveyousness3 ай бұрын
I'm wondering how compact you could make it, say just an efficient computer like one of those Macbook M4's and XR glasses for extra screen. How small could you get the battery pack and solar cells? 🤔
@joshfenn3 ай бұрын
You’d probably still need a pretty big solar panel, but with a big panel you could definitely shrink the battery down quite a bit and be set indefinitely. Power input/output was about even for this setup - would be cool to test the idea though
