Great comments at the end about creating value. Raghu is clearly knowledgeable when it comes to Electrical Engineering, and knows the specs consumers care about. Another solid and informative interview, Joe! Really curious to see if their is a market for standalone batteries once bi-directional EV charging becomes feasible.

I would guess that a home battery would still be valuable for back up, and offsetting TOU. If My wife and I both leave the house, battery would pick up and carry till one of us plugs back in.

It's come so far since I started in the industry, circa '07 thru '17. Back then SMA's were the Benz of inverters, and Sanyo panels were golden. I have a simple Enphase microinverter system now (IQ7) here in Thailand, and it works flawlessly. Love the monitoring platform too. These guys are pushing things further every year to provide the total Point Of Use system to satisfy any residential dwelling. Well done Enphase.

Thank you Joe for entering the lion's den. Visiting Enphase head office and shaking hands with Raghu, details from the man himself, you can not beat that level of due diligence. With two IQ5P installed does that mean a home owner could sell back to the Utility 10KWh worth of power during peak buy back 6pm-7pm in California for example? In theory?

Enphase IQ has the holy grail in being able to create a micro grid. Keep producing and using energy even if the GRID goes down. And of course you do not need batteries., but it is all the better if you do. No comparison.

Compared to the Enphase 10T, the Enphase 5P seems to be thinner so it does not extend out from the wall as much. That may be helpful with a garage installation.

This is what I am planning. I am building a small system with one 5P battery and Combiner 5/5C without the controller for now ( I can add later). That would enable me to charge the battery instead of exporting @ the rate of penny under NEM 3.0 and also use the battery power at night. I can later add another battery and solar panels and then export during the peak rate not at the low rate hours. Will see how much the utility will pay first under NEM 3.0.

@ThomMurphy
@ThomMurphy Жыл бұрын
Yes, and no. You can, as a totally separate system, but not as a single integrated system. Enphase doesn't offer anything to integrate wireless and CANbus communications. They don't even offer a way to move energy between this generation of batteries and their older batteries. That seems like a big miss to me. Surely, some folks may be looking to add these to an existing system. Especially so when at some point in the future it's likely the 3/10 are no longer available but this (or even later generation) are. It, also, seems to me that if they can offer vehicle (that they've got little to do with) to home (and vice versa) charging, they should be able to manage charging (and discharging) between their own systems. If they're not already working on a solution for this, then IMO, they need better vision. That said, they mentioned this battery and it's capabilities long ago. They do tend to mention future developments somewhat freely. So, it seems very strange if they've been working on a solution to integrate this but haven't mentioned it. It makes me think that they have no plans for this sort of integration.

@@ThomMurphy thanks for the feedback. in assumed the same based on communication protocols but it would be good to have a this question directly answered by them since with all the sales they have recently for the 3T/10T batteries it would no make sense in the future not allowing your previous customers to have access to these storage options without having to install a completely new system. Wait... why not just wire panels from the roof to the battery inverters so the inversion happens just once? While copper is expensive, you dont need 2 sets of inverters and you dont loose efficiency. . Still, great product. I think I might drop sourcing a Tesla.... once I find out how much this thing costs. You're a Product officer, so the answer will ALWAYS be "value-based pricing". What you could say is whether it's more, less, about the same as a Tesla as they are very public about their pricing and their battery system also provides A LOT of value.
@weaesq
@weaesq Жыл бұрын
Wire resistance and safety. Running DC current over long distances drops voltage and heats the wire - loss of efficiency - and if heated sufficiently can cause fires if the wrong wires are used. With DC systems a significantly higher voltage is used down to the central inverter (e.g., 360 volts DC) instead of 120 volts AC. When enphase was just starting, installers were skeptic. A central inverter system had fewer components and was more reliable it was beleived. Enphase has caught up on reliability over the years, particularly when DC to DC optimizers are attached to panels in a central inverter system.

You didn't once mention roof top solar output and how it would work with these? Wish I could find out more? I have 10kw (27 panels) of Enphase iq8. If I add one or two of these batteries can I basically run most of my house off my roof panels on a sunny day and these batteries will just sort of buffer?, like if a cloud went by the batteries will output more but if my panels produce more than my house is using then the extra solar energy will charge the battery back up? I am asking about for when the grid is down from a storm etc.

That was more of what I was looking for, namely if they created a REP, but I see they partnered instead. At $40 per month bill credit plus unlimited wholesale buyback credit, that looks close to paying for one battery over the 15 year warranty. Without solar, it might be difficult to get enough out of one battery to allow export to the grid in peak usage times.

So you cannot just use a simple battery? You have to have all that extra stuff, micro inverters, controllers, communication and more. Sounds like you are backwards updating and older system that was missing parts. Why not just make a single inverter with a controller that takes both AC and DC from panels. So mirco inverters if you want them and MMPTs if you want DC and do not have shading issues. Then you can DC charge the battery directly from Solar improving efficiency and allowing for direct energy to EV car charging. Or you can use AC from micro inverters if you have shading and want just a grid tie. Less parts and a simpler system. Not so many boxes on the wall. I can not wrap my head around it. You collect DC on the roof and convert it to AC on the roof. Send it down to a combiner box, then to a battery, then again inverting back into DC then for the battery? To use the energy from the battery you reverse back to AC when you originally had that coming off the roof rather than DC to AC to start??? Also having a bunch of micro inverters rather than one only increases the % of having at least one failing. Your battery has a ton of them, 12 per battery. Then what happens to the battery with a single micro inverter failure? You say pop it out, I doubt it will operate with one missing nor will a power company allow that. I mean one on the roof failing is not an issue, but now your battery has dozens of micro inverters as well? Why? Why not keep it simple, with DC. So lets say 24 panels on the roof all with micro inverters plus two Enphase batteries now you have 48 micro inverters? WHY?? Enphase wins for most complex system. Is Enphase battery Agnostic? Doesn't sound like it but I am not sure. I just hope you can use your EV as a battery without micro inverters as that is the current movement. Here is a simple idea, If you have an EV why not duel use your car as a battery without micro inverters?? Solar DC to car or car DC to inverter to AC when you need it. One box!! Simple. Less parts to fail.

They are behind the curve in getting "more power out of this battery". Gee whiz, even sogens, like the EcoFlow Delta Pro can give 3.6kw of power. Almost all the server rack batteries give 4.8kw out of their 5kwh batteries. I do not know why you are promoting this company. They are behind the curve by YEARS. You said in another video you were not a Solar Salesman but that is exactly what you are doing (IMO). Here in Northern California many homeowners do not need HVAC. Boy you must live in a very small portion of NorCal. Gee, multiple micro-inverters to get the power output they want. What a waste and complexity -- and thus I am sure cost also. What about a good inverter like from Schneider XW Pro or SolArk or Victron or the new EG4 18kwPV system. Several of these are all-in-one and UL listed for CA.
