A Landscape painted and sold in one hour.
My next Zoom class is on September 28, 2024 and I'll be painting my version of a Dutch scene with a windmill by Willem Roelofs, 1822 - 1897. The link to that class is here: momence.com/s/...
KZbin has a good video of Willem Roelofs' work: • Schilderijen van Wille...
This technique is not really suitable for acrylics.
Thanks to those of you who attended the class! I don't usually upload my Zoom class videos because the video quality is not always OK. This one, however, seems to be good enough.
If you would like to get involved in my online painting lessons, here's the link:

Colours used: Ultramarine Blue, Royal Blue, Payne's Grey, Sap Green, Red Ochre, Japanese Red and Titanium White.

I watch all your videos, I think you are a great artist and a great teacher. What I would like to know is what canvas are you using? Is it a Loxley or a Winsor & Newton? If not, would your technique work on these boards? I have tried using your technique on ampersand and failed miserably. By the way, I watched one of your wife’s videos recently and really enjoyed it. What a beautiful person (inside and out) your wife is - you are blessed.

I don't often paint on canvas. I prefer 3 or 5mm plywood.

I'd avoid boards (canvas stretched over cardboard) if you can, they tend to be too absorbant, soaking up oil paint giving you a dull finish. It's always better to go for a stretched canvas (cotton or linen) or a genuine wooden board, properly prepared with Gesso. Use Artist's colours, they are the best and most consistant quality.

Lucky buyer! And how cool to own a great painting complete with a detailed video of it actually being created. You purchase the physical painting and also receive the voice, the hand, and the mind (AKA the thought process) of its creator. That's rare!

The biggest problem with watching your videos, Stuart, is that you make me want to start a new painting right away, to try what you have demonstrated. The problem is, I have no room left for wet paintings! And I mean none! Come to that, I'm out of space for dry ones, too. Any suggestions in that department? I only have a tiny place. You're downright addictive. Maybe you should post a warning! 😁

@DeborahHamilton-q1w

@@Broody58 I have the dry ones on a shelving unit 4 feet wide (5 shelves plus the top), with some hanging from it on hooks. Wet ones on what's left of the walls, on spare tabletop easels (perched on a couple of those tray tables that fold) and leaning against things, including a box of other dry ones. I'm in a tiny apartment, and have dogs. I can only use the one tiny spare room for storing, and not all of that! Since I rent, I am limited as to what I can do. I think I've reached saturation point! lol

You could drop some off at a local donation center (like a Goodwill store, Salvation Army store, or whatever is close to you) and let the poor enjoy actual hand painted art at a discount. Just a suggestion, take it or leave it.

@@DeborahHamilton-q1w storage, de frame & roll? I was going to have an exhibit, but the place is too small. So I have to go ask an old friend for his big space & his percentage of price.

@@whytchywooo crazy coincidence..I shop there! I'd buy back my work at a discount. Crazy like a time warp..I could buy completed work cheaper then it cost in materials & time! Thanks for the suggestion.

This was the shot of inspiration I've needed for a few months, thank you! Here's a question for you - have you ever painted a foggy/misty scene using your technique? I can't remember seeing any videos on that, but I'd love to see how you'd tackle it.

Paynes Grey. Named for William Payne who was looking for a more atmospheric looking grey that was unlike a more blackish grey that he deemed unsuitable. Not sure but, I believe he predominately painted in watercolour?

Hi Stuart, great video as always! Question about drying time: every time I use a lot of walnut oil or linseed oil for glazing or thinning paint it takes an eternity to dry. Is that normal ? Anyway around that?
