499,000 would not even get you a condo in Southern California nowadays. I like how the price of my house has gone up to over $1 million in my house payment is $2000 a month cheaper than an apartment.

If that home were in CT , in an average Mil Rate town, the taxes would be far more. So hard to stay in the Northeast to retire.

Look up 158 Auburn street in Portland Maine,.27 acres,3 bed one bath cape on busy road ,1000 square feet…..399 thousand…..this is a bargain,no noise and waterfront to boot
