Sea Otters are my absolute favourite. It would be a dream come true to live on one. Small and compact, my kind of living.

Wet room with plywood walls etc, what could go wrong in a room that will "always" be wet.
@gegwen74404 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Balletto One a day is enough especially on a tiny steel boat that is surrounded by moisture to keep wet forever.

I'm in the US, but I plan on spending extended time in the U.K. In the near future. Intrigued at the idea of using a narrowboat as a temp home. Any advice? E.g. Financing available for non residents, or have to purchase outright? VAT apply? Insurance costs? Extended mooring costs? I know you can tie up anywhere for up to two weeks, but what about a spot in a marina with H2O, electricity and a shower? Does this even seem like a semi sensible idea or just plain daft? Would I likely lose my shirt if I bought and sold 12 months later, or is the market strong enough?

I would advise coming here on holiday and renting a few narrowboats to see what you like before making the jump. Marina costs are likely to be very low for a boat of that size especially outside of london.

I used to live in the USA, and now here in the UK. Be happy to aid you in any questions. I think first and foremost is your time here in the UK is on a Visa; so 6 months not 12 months (situation depending); is your limit in any one period. Go across the boarder and come back and they may have something to say... That said; we have plenty of friends who come here in the spring (my favourite time) and leave just after the summer (late August). Making the most of our better weather (that isn't always sun!)... The waterways are lovely; such a brilliant way to explore the UK. Boats can be financed; but from knowledge I'd say hard. The deposits; interest rates; and criteria on age will likely leave you scrambling to find the cash instead... Wouldn't want to spend my time in a marina. See narrowboats as an RV on water; all the amenities you need are within reach anywhere you travel. As for money; you can hire a boat... Or; you can always look go buy and sell again. Any boat; new or old can have issues. Using someone like RBS will benefit you; to getting a quality boat, that you can no doubt resell later when the time is right. The UK is a beautiful place to explore!.

Liam Hainsworth, many thanks for the detailed response. I went to uni in the U.K. (Scotland) and still have friends I visit regularly, so I feel like I have a grasp of the basics. Appreciate your thoughts on the financing and resale issues. My tentative, plan is to spend 4-6 mos in U.K. Then 3 mos on the continent in France or Italy, then back to U.K. For 6 mos. then decide if we (wife and I) want to come back to US, or extend living abroad.

@@makelikeatree1696 if you lived in Scotland you've no doubt seen the worst of our weather.. haha! There is an amazing waterway in Scotland id love to do. Timothy and Pru did a TV Show on channel 4 called "great canal journeys". If you can stream it; watch series 2, episode 4. They do the forth and Clyde in Scotland; my goodness it's incredible!!!!!!

Would you lose your shirt? I looked at a new 40ft Otter at £40k about the time this was built, that's ~£1000 per foot so that's lost out to any inflation. A boatyard mooring gives security BUT does tend to tie you to an area if you do short breaks. Renting would give you opportunity to decide where to keep if you do buy.

Nice boat wet room needs tiling though. Also they are made of aluminium good that they don't rust but also you can't weld aluminium.
@machiavellian74904 жыл бұрын
With plain chocolate
@JasperJanssen4 жыл бұрын
.... of course you can weld aluminium? How else do you think these boats are made? It does require different gear, so you won’t be able to get it done literally everywhere, like you can with steel, but it’s entirely possible to do repairs on it if necessary.

2000 engine hours is pretty much as i would expect ! If you say an average 4 hours running a day for 21 days a year you are looking almost 18 years, same age as the boat.
@maarten_notjustagrip4 жыл бұрын
Hours on engines are not calculated like that. They are a count of total revolutions and recorded on an hour meter, not a clock.
@JasperJanssen4 жыл бұрын
@@maarten_notjustagrip is there any documentation to support that? Literally everything I can find is that hour meters are literally that: hour meters. And not a rev counter that converts revs into hours.
