Great comparison as usual! I really like the way you do this videos, they're very honest and they keep me coming back for more :-) Listening to your comparison I agree with you about anything but the price difference being worth. I mean, here the real deal sounds better and the nuances you mentioned are obvious. The point is the digital modelers are all about mimicking real devices, and here you're getting 99% of it with the FM3, without messing with more advanced parameters that may help improving the sound, at a third of the price point. Moreover you get portability, as you said, a ton of top quality effects as well as hundreds of other amps. But, in my humble opinion, you forgot the 2 most important differences you get with the FM3: sound consistency and hardware reliability. While the latter could be discussed, the first one cannot ;-) You will get the same sound in your records and live, no matter the ambient temperature, the mic positioning, etc. etc. All in all I see more pros in the modeler than the amp. The only scenario I prefer the amp is when playing for my own pleasure, in the room. So, again, something I am the only one to benefit from.

I don’t really agree on sound consistency.,.. Over the updates on my AxeFxIII I had sometimes completely lost the sweet spot amp sound I had because they changed their algorithms in a bad way. I had this horrible feel when I had sold my AxeFxIIXL to get the AxefxIII which IMO was better... more bass response and high were more musical and pleasant. The Kemper in another hand is just what the profile dictate. Profiles don’t change over updates. That’s the reason I sold AxeFxIII for Kemper.
@FabioCattaneo4 жыл бұрын
NO TALK Guitar Amp Plug-ins Reviews I see your point, but I was talking about amp sound vs modeler sound (generic, not specific to FM3). Of course if you keep updating the firmware you must audition your presets everytime and this is not ideal for the touring musician. However, Axe-FX is the flagship processor and it’s the one constantly introducing new algorithms. I think the FM3 will be much more conservative (just look at the gap now...)
@2084144 жыл бұрын
I think your point about consistency is a good one. With a real amp / cab / microphone setup your tone is going to be inconsistent from stage to stage. Moving a microphone a few cm in any direction can dramatically change the tone heard by the audience. You also have to deal with issues surrounding bleed from other instruments into your mic and balancing amp volume with the needs of the venue. The amp modeler will be the same every time (though you may need to adjust global EQ to fit the PA / room). It also gives you total control over stage volume without any bleed from other instruments.

You did a great job of dialing in the FM3 on this demo. I think matching the impedance curve helped a lot. You might want to turn off the input gate on the FM3 (which is on by default) so that it will ring out more similarly to the real amp.
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, thank you! you actually helped me a lot in setting up the FM3 with your suggestions! As far as I know, in order to turn off the input gate, we should turn its threshold at zero and by default it is at -60. In my tests, even if the gate is set to zero, the fluctuations are still present and they are more evident than the real deal (at least in comparison with my Soldano). Actually with the threshold at zero the fluctuations are even more evident in my opinion. In this test I've reduced the threshold at -80, which in my opinion is the sweet spot... or the best result that I have achieved (still in my opinion, in terms of noise and fluctuations). Thank you for your message!

One of the things i would like to mention is the high and low cut in the preamp section on the FM3. I tend to turn them off (set them at 0 and 20 or 40k). It gives u more top end "liveliness" and less of that mid range hump. Another thing i like to do sometimes is to set the output EQ on the amp model in the Mesa Mark series mode and set the 750hz slider on -2 or -3 db. That eliminates that boxy mid frequencies that some of the models have. Cheers!

As always, Leo does the most in depth comparisons focusing on things that really matter to guitar players. Super channel that deserves a much bigger audience! One thing that would be great is a set of tests comparing modellers to amps in a live setting. @@LeoGibsonGtr VS the Fractal, if you have a good FRFR wedge that actually can move some air, there is really very little difference, and in fact the fractal cuts through the mix better in the front of the house. Its just super clean. But again the trick is for anyone to have a GOOD (and I do stress GOOD) FRFR. If its missing its balls on the low end and can't move enough air that you can "feel" it, then its a lost cause.

Great comparison as always. Yes, the Soldano is worth every cent. The minor things you mentioned are very important at this level and can make THE difference in feel on stage. You play the way you feel and this again will notice every audience. Would I bring it on stage if I could have it much more convenient? Only if I had people carrying and setting everything up for me... So the answer is no. I would still take the small digital solution, especially for small venues which make at least 80% of my gigs. Actually, the muddiness of the FM3 is one of my problems as well. It has some kind of blanket over the sound. It wasn't there in the AXE II but is present for FM3 and AXE III. Maybe the master volume is adding just too much virtual power amp breakup which actually could be the reason. The master volume on the AXE units is a fixed log10 taper whereas on the real amps it differs.

I thought the tones were very similar between the two units. The differences were not significant enough for me to purchase the Soldano. I thought the main difference was that the Soldano had a longer, and smoother sustain/decay than the FM3, that that was quite evident in a couple of the tests. The FM3 was much quieter than the Soldano, something that I value very highly. I much prefer the small size of the FM3, its features, versatility, and price. I prefer to listen to music, including my playing, through headphones, and don't have much use for an amp. So, I'm not the best person to review various amp, but I do know what I like and what I think sounds good. Both units sounded good, and I can hear why you purchased the Soldano - its got a beautiful sound. I prefer that kind of sound much more than your Marshall. I don't know if the FM3 would be able to more closely emulate the Soldano given more time to adjust the settings. I'm not wedded to how amps sound. I only care about that the sound I hear is what I want and I like it. Thanks for another excellent review. You're the best!

I STILL can't tell if the upper mid bump in the modeling units ("honk"), that seems to also mask upper frequency "openness" is a result of aliasing. Axe FX II, for instance, is locked in to run at 48k. We guitarists use massive amounts of saturation as the cornerstone of many tones. Suffice to say, the result would end up being aliasing or smearing of upper frequency content with very steep filters. If modeling companies can figure this out on hardware units, then it might make all the difference. Until then, we cannot know if it is the algorithmic programming or aliasing. Although, as I just said, there's no way that aliasing is NOT a noticeable factor. (I have started using Neural DSP natively in my DAW running at 96k for this reason).

I always found digital amps sounds congested in the mids. That's why real amps appears more 3D I think. Fractal for live is perfect and a real soldano for the studio with some pedals is the only amp one would ever need. Save those Neve preamps for later and get a real Soldano first :P

Leo, its only worth it if you have the sort of income that you do :P . You really get a lot of sounds in the FM3 for $999.

😊...yes, the FM3 is a tone machine...the Soldano is a kind of investment.. and it is really inspiring and well sounding. Thank you for your message!

hello, IMO not worth the extra money, i think within 10 years from now digital is goiing to match up to analog if not even better, i own a FM3 and also some tube amps, friedman, marchall,.. and to be honest some presets sounds even better than the real thing IMO, poeple who say that analog is always going to be better are poeple who are really shortminded and don't want to explore the digital world, i was one of those people a few years ago, man am i happy i did not stayed sticked on analog, but hey that's just me

The SOLDANO is better at being a SOLDANO but the fm3 is close. The fm3 is more versatile. At the end of the day it depends what you can afford. Plus you can sell the fm3 when the fm4 comes out and still get half of your money back. You could also keep the SOLDANO for ten years. But I think that amp modeling will improve a lot in ten years and eventually it could get as good as the real thing which is good news for guitarists. Personally my ears prefer the sounds of real amps. But my wallet and back prefer the price and weight of the fm3.

Leo Gibson i literally don’t like 80’s metal, poison and kiss style hair metal, maybe that’s why i don’t like soldanos sound?? It really doesn’t touch me.
