seems like they failed to lubricate the bearings AT ALL during manufacturing it. I have one of these AC fans, I used for the same purpose when I solder, I also stick it in the kitchen window when cooking, came from a very very old photo copier, I guess they would sell after market cooling for them. 120mm, It sat outside in a shed for 15 years and made sounds similar to that failing fan until I took it apart and cleaned it and re-lubricated it with sewing machine oil, that kind of oil is my main go to for all fan bearings.

This is extremely useful fan maintenance lore

I had a Howard Industries brand 120mm AC fan when I was maybe 6 years old. Solid, made in USA. I still have it and it still runs today. I have seen many a "muffin fan" as we called them in computers over the years fail, mainly due to lack of lubrication. But how would they expect to sell you a new one if they lubricated it to begin with? That tiny, tiny cost savings bring in dollars worth of revenue.
