couldn't have explained it better. a few extra tips: - Make sure you work in a well ventilated place or use a vapor-sucking-machine-thingy.. - Extra Pro Tip: breath in before soldering and slowly breath out through the mouth in a focused stream to blow away the "toxic" vapor - When using solder wick, apply a bit of solder to the wick before using it, because this way it will transfer the heat to the acutal solder below the wick much faster and suck the solder in better. - Flux is lethal to the solder iron tip. get it of there ASAP after you are done soldering. - Do not heat up pads that are close to semiconducters too much, as the heat will transfer into the semiconducters and potentially destroy them. - When soldering through-hole components, make sure not to use too much solder, because it may flow through the hole and short with an adjacent hole on the bottom side. Hope this helps guys :)

Right, it's the flux or rosin that makes the smoke bad for you. However, to keep your tip working for the longest time possible you should tin the tip of it a bit when you're done soldering for the day, even if the solder has a rosin core.
@XaserII8 жыл бұрын
yep, this will way, the solder tin coating will oxidize when the iron is not used and can be cleaned of the next time the iron is turned on. just make sure that you use just a bit of solder and that the flux has evaporated fully from the tip.
@si-fi8 жыл бұрын
Fume extractors are cheap and easy to make from computer fans, and most geeks will have the parts lying around, so all you need to buy is the carbon activated filter. Some good tips there Xaser. For sensitive jobs (FC, ESC, VTX, ...) I put electrical tape on top of the bits not being soldered to help avoid solder splatter. Another tip I've read is to leave any ground/negative soldering work until after signal/positive soldering has been done. Rationale being ground is shared on the PCB, so more metal needs to be heated, and getting heat into the board first will make the job easier.

You listed flux as part of the process and discussed how you clean it off, but I don't think you ever showed how you use it or discuss when it should be used (particularly given the fact that flux is already in your solder). I've been soldering up FPV rigs for a few years now and have never used extra flux. That being said, your trick to tin up a bare wire by rotating it with your fingers and touch it to the extended solder wire is genius. I'm definitely incorporating that into my normal operating procedure. Thanks very much.
@FinalGlideAus8 жыл бұрын
Sometimes when I add servo pins to the FC I find some extra flux added before I solder it on helps make the job easier. Some guys like to add flux before each time they solder something new to aid in the process. I like to add it in situations I know I will have trouble doing it quick enough.

Great tips for beginners. One I would add is you should consider the soldering action a 3-step process: preheat, apply solder, afterheat. Of course it's not quite the same if you've already put the needed amount of solder onto e.g. the PDB pad but the idea stays the same.

1. Do not inhale the fumes. Do not inhale ANY fumes. If you smell something, that means you're *more likely than not* inhaling it. Put a fan or whatever to blow it away. 2. When soldering the tinned wire onto a pad or other wire: do not hold the wire with your hand. The solder must solidify without ANYTHING moving. Any movement, no matter if it is imperceptibly small, compromises the quality of the joint. Heat up the pad with the soldering iron ("one thousand..."), *place* the wire onto the pad and feed it solder ("... two thousand...") and finally remove the soldering iron ("... three thousand.") 3. Notice how he places the soldering iron tip *below* the wire. That's the correct way. 4. The temperature must be *just high enough* to melt the solder. Not any higher. If you feel like you need to go higher, then you need to change the tip or get a better soldering iron. 5. This kind of editing is fun for the fun videos, but for explanatory/tutorial videos it is downright HORRIBLE. Sorry for being blunt, but that's how it is.
@LenfredDueck8 жыл бұрын
wow you know sooooo much.
@GeorgeTsiros8 жыл бұрын
does solder melt at a different temperature when soldering thicker gauge wire? No, it doesn't. Setting it to a higher temperature is a ghetto way to approach this issue. If you want to do it properly, you use a higher wattage iron. Have you not noticed that soldering irons come in various power ratings? Guess why that is. Lenfred Dueck ye, I do, in fact.

Such a good video, only complaint, is that you tell me that Flux is very important, but you never show when and how to use it at all :)
@pdgiddie7 жыл бұрын
Separate flux is rarely needed, as Chad has said in another comment. It occasionally helps when the solder won't flow well, but often a bit more solder will add flux and get things moving.
@propeine7 жыл бұрын
I know this is from a few months ago but what iron are you using/does rotor riot recommend?
@pdgiddie7 жыл бұрын
Anything from Weller is great. You can go cheaper for basic jobs, but avoid anything where the iron plugs straight into the wall. Get a soldering station with an adjustable temperature dial and you'll probably be OK. Also, check out the EEVblog YT channel. He has a great series on starting out soldering.
