Gabriel Reyes was born in Los Angeles, California. When he was of legal age, he joined the US army and excelled at his job. He was hand-picked, alongside other soldiers such as Jack Morrison, to be test subjects for the Soldier Enhancement Program, which was America's way of dealing with the Omnic Crisis. After that, he and Morrison were chosen to be part of the six founding members of Overwatch, alongside Ana Amari, "Liao", Reinhardt Wilhelm, and Torbjorn Lindholm. After 4 years, the Overwatch Strike-Team ended the Omnic Crisis and Morrison was appointed new Strike-Commander of Overwatch, replacing Reyes. Gabriel was angry, and he was downgraded to be Strike-Commander of Overwatch's Covert-Ops division, Blackwatch, due to his more aggressive and merciless nature. Although they were best friends in the past, Gabriel hated Morrison and Overwatch now. 20 years later, after Overwatch had recruited new agents such as Tracer and Mei, and even Blackwatch got McCree, Reyes and Morrison got in a huge fight that blew up the Swiss HQ, killing Reyes. Morrison survived, so the body was never found. Dr. Angela Ziegler tried to revive Reyes, but what she got was a twisted shadow-monster knwon as The Reaper. The Reaper was madman seeking only one thing: revenge. He joined the terrorist organization known as Talon, and the rest is history.

No. He was in a gang, then caught, imprisoned. Reyes talked to him and gave him the choice of joining Blackwatch and giving up being a bad guy OR maximum security prison. He chose the former. After Reyes started plotting against Overwatch years later, McCree left Blackwatch because he wanted nothing to do with the betrayal of Gabriel Reyes to Jack and to Overwatch.

Actually, Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) was meant to become Strike Commander. Turns out, Jack Morrison (Soldier 76) did, and Reyes got jealous. This would destroy their friendship, and Reyes and his Blackwatch (the Black Ops division of Overwatch) followers would create a plan to bring down Overwatch. So, they blew up the Overwatch HQ.

Also, it was both Reyes and Jack were presumed dead when the Swiss HQ blew up. So while I suspect that Jack knows Reyes is alive, I am unsure if Reyes knows. Also, it should be noted that not every member of Blackwatch was on board with the the infighting. McCree, who was also part of Blackwatch, wanted no parts in Reyes's plan, and actually left Overwatch before the explosion at the Swiss HQ.

Overwatch was losing public support after the war, but Reaper (real name Reyes) who was a partner of Morrison and also head of the Overwatch 'Blackwatch' (black ops division) started to basically go rogue and operate under his own agenda bringing Overwatch down from inside, culminating in a knock-down, drag-out fight between Reaper and 76, which is how their headquarters got destroyed and was basically the last straw for the public.

noah ibrahim I get massive headaches at low fov, which is caused because I have an astigmatism in one eye from getting stabbed in the eye when I was 9. All it takes is an FOV greater than about 90 (sometimes more depending on the game) to prevent me from getting said headaches. With Overwatch, I've actually gotten serious headaches just watching the 10 minute previews and that is pretty bad.

The theory I've heard is that during his fight with Jack, he actually DID die, but Mercy revived him with a prototype of her Ultimate. It... mostly worked. Evidence often cited is their dialog together: Mercy: What happened to you? Reaper: Why don't you tell me, doc?

Something I noticed. 0:17- Along with Jack Morrison there was also the mother of the Fareeha Amari who would eventually become Pharah, Tobjorn, Reinhardt, as well as man wielding two shotguns who I believe will become Reaper. If that last part is true then I think that either Soldier 76 isn't the only one looking for answers, or the answers he's looking for may have right beside him the entire time.

To all those wondering: Obviously Blizz is going to make a full length OW film. After all this teasing short film hype, lack of actual single-player campaign story, generally being an awesome game, and the obvious fanbase thirst for more story content, it would be absolutely moronic of them not to invest a few mil into a full movie...they are going to make BANK. I, for one, would actually consider breaking my 5-ish year streak of not going to the overpriced theaters.

I think his line of ‘Call me a vigilante if you want. Truth is, I’m just a soldier.’ speaks to his character. He literally is a vigilante. Someone who takes on the role of dealing out justice on their own terms, with no formal allegiances is a vigilante. He’s delusioned himself so much into thinking he’s still a soldier who fights for a cause, one which no longer exists by that time.

I have this theory that maybe Soldier 76 got a visual disability as a result of the explosion. Might explain why he has those visors.
