An actor that can deliver a convincing performance without much dialogue is a key sign of a great actor, Kurt Russell again is great.

As someone who has done theatre, I know from experience that it is far harder to act without saying a word. Someone who is really good can tell you everything you need to know without dialogue. That's a real good performance by Kurt.

24:42 That bit where Todd cries for the first time in his life was sad. He's been dumped on the garbage planet at the order of Colonel Meckham and now the crash survivors banish him from the colony on the planet cos of his mental conditioning and combat training and that he could never fit into a peaceful community due to his violent life as a space marine.

30:20 You missed one of the best scenes with the black soldier. In the weapons training, when the enemy dummy moves behind the woman holding a baby dummy he takes his finger off the trigger. TODD then shoots through the woman and child to hit the enemy. The black soldier looks at TODD almost exasperated.

Bloody love this Movie. It has its faults, but it is a damn fine watch. The story works really well. A few of the action scenes look more like they were made for TV, but I just do not care. For your money you get: Sean Pertwee, Jason Isaacs, Connie Nielsen and Kurt Goddamn Russell. Absolutely Perfect. Why all the hate? I have no idea why so many people have thrown their toys out of the pram. Judging by their reviews, I do bot believe they have ever watched this Movie.

I watched this in a theatre when it came out in ‘98. I loved it then and Soldier remains one of my favorite movies. It’s a hero’s journey and character transformation in terms of Todd’s literal and metaphysical salvation. To me it could have been in the same cinematic universe as Joss Whedon’s “Firefly.” I love the fantasy of the Space Punk genre. I love Off the Shelf Reviews but this review is a little underwhelming.

“Soldier” may actually be my favorite Kurt Russell role. And I don’t mean that Todd is my favorite character he’s played, I think that honor goes to Jack Burton, but rather this is the best acting I’ve ever seen him do. Todd 3465 is such a diametric opposite from the kinds of characters Kurt typically plays, who tend to be talky in one way or another, emoting aggressively through their speech. I’m not trying to take away from the body language Russell exhibits in his other roles, because it’s absolutely there to support his lines, but here almost the entirety of the acting is through body language, and intentionally subtle body language at that. It really communicates the reality of Todd’s training that *any* form of emotive response was seen as a form of weakness and therefor a danger, to himself, to the unit, to the mission. It’s truly a feat of combined acting, cinematography and editing to successfully express that almost exclusively with body language. I genuinely got emotional watching this review, recognizing some of the same stunted social skills and limited translation of skills from military to civilian life as a former soldier myself. I wasn’t a front line fighter like Todd, but that mentality saturates the entirety of the military in one form or another, regardless of your role. Just as “Event Horizon” made me feel an extraordinary sense of dread, “Soldier” hits my heart for those of us trained to sublimate our humanity for the express purpose of fighting other people’s battles.

Two senses in this movie hit home that weren't touched on; the christmas party and the work out. Todd's both memories and reactions, kick in. PTSD, is very real for SGT Todd. For the people around him, they are clueless. Why they seemed unanumuis in kicking him out of that community, is not a surprise. Be for the war on terror, I'd never heard, "Thank you for your service". When I came home from the Marines, no one said that. The reaction was, fine what ever or surprised you're not dead. A sad truth is from the end of Veit Nam to 9-11-2001, nobody gave a shit. Nobody wanted to know what happened to you. Nobody wanted to hear about Central America, Kuwait, Lebennon, Somalia, Bosnia. Nobody cared that people died and some watched and couldn't stop it from happening. The peoples reactions to Todd and how to some, saw him as problem, his first meal in the cafiteria and that cock-breath, fuck-face, getting in his face. Then later, same said cheese-dick, "Need any help fella?". Priceless, for me! I still like this movie. Always will!

The space battle isnt that like when they are fighting on different planets in the beginning? I think that part should have been in there. About the babies in the beginning when they are picking candidates that is showing that they are not crying, those babies are disposed of, that is why the nurses look like they do.

To this day it’s still Paul WS Anderson’s best movie (behind Death Race) for me. Yeah it’s hardly a cinematic masterpiece; but it’s got well shot action and great performances from Russell, Isaacs and Busey. Glad that like most of Russell’s movies it’s been better received with time and got Cult status.

I've seen Soldier listed as the worst film ever! It may not be a great movie, but it is an average movie, or on the better side of average. I really like the different feeling of the movie from most action movies, the lack of one liners and testosterone, just do what you do best without passion, which happen to be killing people.

It's hard to put into words why this film doesn't work, it has many great elements and terrific potential but somehow it just doesn't all hang together right. Did you spot Michael Chilkis from The Shield amongst the colonists? It's an interesting contrast with the old sci-fi series, Space; Above and Beyond episode 'Who Monitors the Birds?' which deals with the character of Cooper Hawks, an artificial human created and trained to be the perfect soldier.

I'm surprised to hear it's regarded as so bad. I don't think it's brilliant, personally, but there are many many worse films, and this one actually has quite a few fans. I think the disaster that wiped out the outdoor set must take some of the blame for the film not being better, as they had to stretch an already thin budget to compensate. The replacement set just didn't look very good.

I agree. 'The Thing' is f*#%*£g awsome dude. John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and 'Bladerunner' are my sci-fi favourite films. I can only sub-categorise them rather than choose my no.1. One is existential sci-fi and the other is horror sci-fi. Both beautifully crafted and brought together by extremely creative, hard working, talented and passionate individuals working together in a team. Keepo up the good work bud. I look forward to watching many more of your reviews.

I'm always amazed how aging Peter Pans doing these reviews constantly abuse scenes, props, and characters from vidiot games (that stole most of their ideas from movies such as Soldier) to deride the films as derivative. Millennial Disease is a very real thing and we have a generation with a bizarre mental model of history. I can see where it will only take another 15 years to end up as the world of Idiocracy.
