I use C158 and 9310 bcgs and never had a problem with either one. I also use a little weapon shield gun grease on my bcgs. It doesn't evaporate off or burn off very easily and stays where you put it. I've used it after its been on the gun for 5 years in storage and it still does the job.

There is also the correct 3 bore sizes in the bolt carrier and having proper machining that meets TDP spec. Every SOLGW bolt carrier I have put on my bench has passed with flying colors..SOLGW puts out an outstanding product..

You are 110% Correct very few people know what Milspec is or isn't. Love it when I see NITRIDE BCG and says Milspec. I'm a sucker for TDP Colt M16 BCG / Bolt. Colt and LMT are the only ones I've never had an issue with . I do need to try one of SOLGW M16 BCG / Bolts. Colt gold spring is my go too for sure . I'd imagine yours is probably the exact same or better.

yup, Mike is laying down what SHOULD be common knowledge about a BCG. I use SOLGW and SIonics BCGs for any rifle I consider a "duty" grade rifle (sure, I have no problem grabbing a $70 toolcraft BCG when I'm putting together an Aero or PSA fun gun. I'm not so worried about the small chance of premature failure there).

As My time in the military has progressed and my studying of those specifications has progressed I have learned that “milspec” is not what most people think. Mil-Specis commonly confused with poor maintenance and repair. Mil-spec is not the common problem it’s components that have exceeded there intended life cycle.

Isn’t the viability of the magnetic particle test based on doing the high pressure test first? You’re looking for the particles to adhere to imperfections or failure points once magnetism is applied to the medium. Why would there be apparent cracks before the HPT?? What solvent do you guys recommend using when cleaning your Bcg's? I try my best to not use any kind of scraping tools or metal brushes to interfere with removing tolerances but with the phosphate coating it's murder trying to clean the bolt tail. Even soaking with hoppes I still have to aggressively scrub and there's still a nice layer of carbon...

9310 is used in m240 and m249 bolts and is just fine, a 9310 bolt heat treated right beats a 158 bolt with a mediocre heat treat every time. And we see sharps putting out bolts in s7 tool steel which is one of the strongest tool steels out there and barret has been using s7 for 50 BMG bolts for a long time with great success, again it matters how it's heat treated. Also you said 9310 bolts aren't HP tested but we're seeing Aero precision, PSA, and other companies doing those tests on 9310 bolts so I wonder if they have any data on what percentage fail. Now as far as c158 bolts go I would trust a solgw one more than most but just because something was the original formula (from the 50s and 60s) doesn't mean it's still the best as metals and heat treatments and coatings get more advanced. Remember stoner originally wanted a chrome BCG as it is more slippery than phosphate, and while phosphate "holds lube" better it better hold lube because it is a very rough coating and needs more lube than chrome or nickel boron or DLC. I agree coatings should be the last thing considered after materials, tolerances, and hpt/mp but modern coatings make these guns able to run far more rounds between cleanings or reapplying lube. My nickel boron bcg from stag arms is my favorite bcg, it will run with zero lube though I still lube it and will run dirty as hell better than any phosphate bcg I own.

Nickel boron is the absolute worst bcg coating and seriously any time you see a bolt that failed prematurely it’s always 9310. Check school of the American rifle out on KZbin if you actually want to learn something about bolt carrier groups

@@douglasm3310 i have i've watched just about all of their videos, it depends on who makes it. there are nickel boron ones that failed their checks and ones that passed every single check. and idk where you get that 9310 fails prematurely more often, that has not been my experience at all. 9310 is used to make bolts for m249's, m240's, and ar's and has more tensile strength than carpenter 158. the best bolt on the market is probably the geissele one that is carpenter 158 that he worked with carpenter steels to make with less impurities and it's a 100% forged bolt. but that bolt costs a ton, right now my two main rifles that have the most rounds on them have a sharps s7 tool steel bolt and a 9310 nickel boron one, the 9310 is approaching 9,000 rounds and is on it's 2nd sprinco extractor spring and second extractor, and my sharps bolt is in a rifle that i just re-barreled at about 27,000 rounds that bolt has been used since about the 7,000 round mark when my carpenter 158 mil spec bcm bolt broke while firing. take with that what you will, i've been building and shooting the hell out of these things since i was 8 years old and in my experience a good nickel boron bcg allows it to run far longer between cleanings and with more dirt and less oil, it will run without any oil but it's always better to keep it oiled obviously. i don't really need to clean my nickel boron ones but i do because it's an opportunity to see everything and spot problems before they arise

@@CarlPapa88 i wonder how brownell's bcgs are, obviously we can't know unless they're gauged like chad does but a few years ago a friend of mine wanted a nickel boron one (which companies tend to screw up as we've seen on this channel leading to failures or just sloppy tolerances) and i gifted him one from Brownell's for a really good price, 3 years later he has roughly 16k rounds on his, the original bolt is still going although on my advice he got a spare bolt that's been live fired to test with a couple hundred rounds and headspaces correctly for when that bolt does eventually need replacing. never an issue ever with that bcg from brownells, never so much as a hiccup. i've been keeping an eye out to see if one of them ever came across chad's desk to be gauged but haven't seen one. a lot of the same issues a manufacturer can run into with nitride they can run into with NB as far as dimensions go. obviously there's no way to make sure everything is in spec without having the gauges chad uses, but i can say the thing runs perfectly for that many rounds and we were both pleasantly surprised as they were priced pretty well compared to other NB bcg's especially failzero which we've seen fail on a few of chad's videos.

Here is a really long geek question. First, I knew, or thought I knew, that there were different types of steel used in the construction of the bolt carrier group. But seeing your parts list really put into perspective. Does the differing steels of the carrier 8620 and gas key 4130 come in to play when they heat up? I guess as one steel becomes heated and expands at a different rate than other type of steel, could that create an issue that over/under gas's the BCG? Now if this does not play an issue with the SOLGW bolts, and other high quality bolts, could this be an issue that shows its ugly head on low end builds that use cheaper steels?

Not all LPKs are the same, in fact you can tell the difference between a SOLGW kit and many others just by the weight and fit/finish. I have the notes somewhere from the armorers class I took where Mike taught, but they don't cut corners by using cheaper metals in anything, especially in their LPKs. Some companies use a cheaper metal in their LPKs because it's a corner they decide to cut to maximize profit, and for the casual shooter who is only putting at best a few hundred rounds a year through their rifle will probably never notice. I have yet to see a SOLGW bolt catch break, but I've seen plenty of others break, especially SI parts.

@@FinalLugiaGuardian, yes, as long as the bolt headspaces correctly you're good to go. Granted, the chances of getting a bolt and barrel that is going to fail headspace in any AR15 is pretty slim but when I build a gun I always check to make sure the headspace is good. SOLGW BCGs and all their other parts are for sure in mil spec tolerances and usually much better/tighter tolerances. I've never had any real issue when using their parts, but there is a thing called tolerance stacking, where you can have all in spec parts but all the small variations on dimensions of the parts add up to cause an issue. I've seen it most with the lower receiver and it's extension, (the buffer tube), when the variation in dimensions can add up to there being not enough room for the when the BCG comes back and it can smack your lower. With the buffer and spring installed take your BCG and push it in as far as it will go, the BCG shouldn't touch the lower and there should be enough room for two quarters stacked together to fit between the BCG and the lower. If there is not enough room for the quarters then take the buffer and spring out and place a quarter in the buffer tube and test again. You should really look up School of the American Rifle, he has a TON of videos on youtube and instagram and he has his own forum thing that is worth every penny, (it isn't much), to join. Lots of good people and TONS of knowledge there, and they'll answer any question and help anyone out with any build problems. Hope this helps!

hello, I just got my first ar-15 and I purchased a Springfield saint. It seems like a nice rifle but what would be an internal upgrade to that gun to make it more reliable? Im not sure what kind of gun this is, is it military ready, would it be reliable enough to do so or is it more of a budget rifle?

I'd say check the springfield website and read their specs. The Saint is a entry rifle but on the higher end of entry rifles. I'd make sure the rifle isn't over or under Gased (check the ejection pattern). Most importantly you need to shoot the rifle to see if their are any wear issues. If your looking for an internal upgrade a BCG from BCM or SOLGW would be a great choice.

I purchased your bolt carrier and put inside my BCM upper. Ran fine until it ran into some hornandy 62 grain ball Ammo. I put the BCM bcg back on no problem. I believe your bcg are high quality also colts bcg could not fire that round reliably either.

l 800X no problem I did not all I know is the BCM bolt performs no matter what. Same thing happened with my colt bcg as well. I use hornandy 62 grain as a test because the ammo is no good. Out of a 150 round box at least 20 of them won’t fire. Also Daniel defense bcg same thing. BCM was the only one that fires all ammo in the box no problems on first strike. This is unscientific I did not check bolts on why it just is.

Used both 9310 and 158. I think bolts are just like most things the better specs, tolerances and quality control are what matters. Most people that say 158 Carpenter nothing usually follow it up with military uses it but doesn’t understand the history behind why. If you didn’t know it is because the technology back in the 60s 158 Carpenter was the better of the two. Now technology has progressed and 9310 specs are better, if it’s from a reputable company like Aero. But hey this guys got to sell his product so no bias from him ;)

If the cryptic coating bcg weren't $300 and the specs were similar or better I don't see why someone wouldn't choose the bcg. For some who shoot suppressed and have cans with a lot of back pressure, burning off or drying out a phosphate coated bolt can be a pita to clean. This is not to say that a CC bolt isn't but it is a lot easier by comparison. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a DD, BCM, SOLGW bcg, but if my cleaning schedule is more robust than yours perhaps no matter what I choose I'll likely want it to be easier to clean/maintain in the long run. If all I have to do is take a rag or a paper towel and wipe down the bcg and re-lube, I'd say that short amount of time is worth the added cost so long as performance isn't sacrificed.
