Memes are, ultimately, a way of communicating a message by piggybacking of a different message entirely. You can only understand the intended message if you already know the original message. This is a really strange way to communicate, and that strangeness triggers both the humor button and the happy-that-I-belong-in-a-group button in most people that understand them. They’re just inside jokes, basically. I should probably also mention the people that just enjoy seeing old, familiar jokes used in new contexts, either for the familiarity of the jokes or for the mental stimulation of connecting old experiences to new situations. They just tickle the brain in an “ah! I’m picking up what you’re putting down” kind of way. You can see a few times in this video when jimmy doesn’t get a meme and he’s just like “uhhhh” because he doesn’t know the original message, so the intended message is also lost. Most of his reactions are along the lines of “yes I understand the message. What you’re saying is true. The comparison you’ve made makes sense.” But sometimes his reaction is “oh! I really enjoy this comparison!” The difference between these two is completely subjective, it just depends on the individual’s taste
