Thanks very lucid presentation, Arvind, I am transitioning from 2D to SW as I am smitten by the magic of SW and its power, and hope to be as comfortable as you are would you suggest a learning plan, that would be a big help, Does Go Engineer help?

Go for SolidEdge, it doesn't crash as SolidWorks does. Plus both use Parasolid 3D geometric kernel, except that SE is made by Siemens, to which belongs the property of Parasolid, so you'll benefit of the full features and latest developments. If you're more into design than pure CAD, go for SolidThinking Evolve from Altair, still Parasolid but NURBS oriented and very powerful. SW is nice when we begin, but it's a real pain in the ass on a longterm. I'll never recommand it until Dassault change its geometric kernel for the CATIA one. Should happen in the future, to unify their products line and lesser the software maintenance costs, but nobody knows when will it be released. So, simplify your workflow : give a try to SolidEdge, it really worths and you'll be able to open your SW parts and even edit them directly without the history tree in a fingers snap.

The optimized part looks really weird. wouldn't you expect the most material on the outside like an i-beam? can the optimized part be explained with some intuition?

The optimised parts often look odd, I think it changes from an I-beam to more of a circle because the load is mostly torsional, but correct topology optimization depends on many things which are hidden behind the scenes in these programs, you're right not to take the solution at face value without seeing actual quantification of the solution's performance.

You can use polynerbs without crashing your computer and every other computer in the building!?
