In the transition to approval why is the 'nextrevision' always used followed by increment revision? If the current revision is 01-WIP, it gets released to 01. Surely the 'revision' variable is used, and the increment is only done during the new revision as it changes state back to WIP?

@Adam In SOLIDWORKS PDM there is an internal revision counter and then there is the revision variable. The revision variable is what is displayed in the data card, in the folder column display and is tied to the file custom property. The user has the option to use any variable to hold the revision value so PDM cannot automatically update a particular variable with the revision. In order to have the revision variable display the actual PDM revision then it is updated just prior to incrementing the revision. Since it is updated prior to incrementing the revision the value used is which will set the variable to the value the revision will have after it is incremented. In order for PDM to update a variable it must check out the file. This is why variables are updated first, then the revision is incremented, then PDF files are generated. Using this order will have the revision stamp be the last entry in the history of a file upon release. To see the actual or internal revision of a file, look at the history of the file. It will display the PDM revision of that file. In the video (beginning at about 8:25) it shows selecting a revision variable. This is used when the revision is set manually in File Explorer. Select “Modify: Set Revision”. There is a checkbox to “Update variable”. The variable that will be updated is the one chosen in the video.
