To put the 1,500 gp per week training costs into context. It costs, 1,350 gp to build a round tower 30 foot diameter and 30' tall. So, training to high levels is the equivalent of building a castle. This isn't just a weekend doing pushups. This is tuition and learning ancient secret arts.

In my opinion, the one-XP-less-than-2-levels is correct. I like the players deal with treasure, all XP split evenly convention. The training time and cost is a good rule. If a figure cannot afford the training, he can spend half the money and twice the time to self-train. If you go BTB then getting to 2nd level is even more of a miserable slog. I had a Mythical Black Book (but I lost it in my divorce.) it’s such a cool neo-artifact. If I were to run basic, I would purchase one for myself and show the several players where they can get one. Atm OSR tabletop is very difficult and I’m not sure whether it’s going to come back or not. The men who play the game are old and our numbers are dwindling. It’s difficult to persuade someone over 30 to roll funny dice and talk like an elf.

“Treasure must be… turned into a transportable medium or stored in the player’s stronghold to be counted for experience points.” And just like that, Gary has the :”Rule Zero” and the “Rules-as-Written” crowds pulling their hair out. This is definitely one of those areas where the DM must adjudicate. Yet now I understand that if you include patron play the “stronghold” part is solved. The PC returns to their patron’s stronghold (whatever that might be) with treasure for XP… and for training. “Player’s stronghold” can imply ownership or simply where the PC is from.

Caleb Hines points out a passage in the PHB on page 106 that saves our bacon: "Thereafter, as he or she completes adventures and returns to an established base of operations, the Dungeon Master will award experience points to the character for treasure gained..." Whew!

Loving the videos.. I'm agreeing with the group about only one level raise at any one time. On another point, is there a weather chart you should be rolling on?. This would change travel times , visibility , tracking chances, attacks etc. You might get advance notice of monsters in the area out of the ordinary and track them to their lair.

As a note: Spell scroll XP is only awarded to characters who can use the spells. (this is under the scrolls table in the trreasure section, DMG pg 121). Yep, bug. Chainmail is 75gp, splint mail 80gp, banded 90gp. Chain is fairly bulky and 30 lbs, splint and banded bulky 40lbs and 35 lbs. Chain and banded base 9" movement, slpint 6", Platemail is 400, so that would be almost half.

Once you own a legally purchased PDF, you can have it printed on demand anywhere you want. You can even string a bunch of them together in a single-file, and have that printed, and bound in the hardback.

So, transportable medium. Jewelry and gems are already a transportable medium. So, do the XP hit immediately or must they be converted to coin to get the XP? One one hand I've had PC travel long distances and have many adventures just finding a place to sell jewelry. It encourages adventure. Plus, gems and jewelry thus also become XP in limbo. They haven't hit so you can still get XP for other things in the meantime. On the other hand, they already are transportable so if they hit immediately you may become XP locked right away. And, the bookkeeping of what XP has hit becomes simpler. I like the first interpretation as it encourages more adventure while giving the players strategies to maximize XP. The more complicated bookkeeping IMO is worth it. On the other hand, the second interpretation seems both simpler and a more straightforward interpretation. What do people think?

In AD&D, at lower levels a below average player might as well not even play. They need more gold for training than earning the levels.

Shouldn't your Dogs be Training with you and maybe gain +1 hp per your level advancement, not overpowering but a bit more survivable, at the end of your current training they would only be HD 1+3. If you want another Merchant in Town, next time you run into the Caravan, try asking them, they liked you, so maybe they can give you the name of a Shop to visit.
