Episode #226 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures : Taking the Anchor For A Walk
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode I haul up anchor and make my way through the patchwork of coral reefs and point the bow towards the world famous Kaneohe Sandbar.
My friend Cy has anchored his Mason 43 here countless times and talked me through the process: Motor up slowly watching the depth sounder and the color of the water. Once you feel your hull "bump" the sand drop the anchor and pay out about 10 ft of chain. back down to slightly set the anchor, then pay out more scope and swim ashore and carry the anchor out as far as you like. (if the tradewinds were blowing this would have required 2 anchors to do solo, one to hold you in place while you carried out the primary)
It was SOOOO strange to intentional drive into a submerged beach and jump off the bow into 2ft of water! I had a wonderful 3 days anchored at the sandbar and look forward to returning!

Very beautiful. With each episode inside this bay, it becomes a bit clearer how impressive the mountain range behind you must be. It really must be something to see it in person and especially when anchored in a spot like this one here. You really are living the dream. I'm sure there might be lonely moments but that seems a small price to pay for such freedom, beauty and adventure.

Have you ever heard of boats being extended? Mines only 26 feet with a fast hull, I had considered extending the rear 2-3 feet. I would like a larger boat but a 26 foot costs less. Add buoyancy at the waterline. A 28 to 29 foot would be big enough. Even considered adding my diesel turbo from my car!
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 2 жыл бұрын
If you plan on doing ocean sailing I would say this is not feasible, the modified structure of the boat would likely break up in rough seas and sunk in quick order and if you were able to strengthen it enough the costs of strengthening it would likely be more than the cost of a larger boat, not to mention the design aspects of making it a balanced boat. The lines of a hull are specific to its size as is the shape below the waterline and ballast weight

@@SailorJames It's a nice shore boat ok when the seas are calm for exploring. I have visions of yourself with your leg in shark infested waters, so I priced a 15 HP outboard up which will offer some steering. Thanks. There is all of Scotland to view. Across the channel to France where i love. Great whites have been spotted off the coast of southern England.

I bought my boat for $2400 and refit it over 4 years (rough estimate $35k) but I did a lot of expensive upgrades because I plan on sailing in some extreme places. Maintaining costs are minimal after a refit as so many parts are brand new and will last for years.
