In June I solo backpacked the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island in Canada. 50 Miles through forest, along beaches, climbing ladders, crossing bridges and traversing roots and logs on one of those most exciting and beautiful thru hikes I have done to date.
This is part 1 of the journey, chronicling days 1-3.

No camp food pouches sold back in 1979, we had to bring actual groceries and create every meal along the way. Had a big chunk of triple smoked bacon for storage reasons but it tasted great once sliced and cooked up.

That was awesome Alice. I was patiently waiting for this trail report. There is so much to see. I am glad that there is more than one part to this adventure. Very well done, as usual, and the safety comments are greatly appreciated. The West Coast Trail is more than a walk in a park, it is remote and no exit points along the trail. A person has to be self-sufficient for a whole week, to be compatible with the elements and with the wildlife. Good gear is so important, the best quality a hiker can buy and has to depend on. I am glad you did it, you are a tough Lady. Determination is what it takes, the rest follows one step at the time. Hiking solo is difficult, more weight on your back, nobody to share with, especially the food although it is dehydrated most of it, still. I can't wait to watch Part # 2. 🇨🇦 🥾 😎 🇺🇸

So good, Alice! That cable car crossing was beautiful but seemed rough. Not exactly a zip line. The waterfalls where you swam were really cool and looked cold. Hot chocolate after that sounded like a good call. In fact, there wasn’t really much footage of this hike that wouldn’t call for some hot chocolate.

I just flew out of Florida today. It was over a 100° heat index. I’m in North Carolina now. A little cooler. But I’m heading further north tomorrow. I can’t wait to get to get back in the Colorado mountains though.
