Solo Backpacking the West Rim Trail: The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

I have to admit that this solo backpacking trip of the grand canyon in Pennsylvania, located in northern PA along pine creek, had considerable diversity in wildflowers and wildlife. When the vegetation gave way, amazing views of the canyon could also be seen from along the rim. A mysterious effect was created on my second morning by low lying clouds which also helped to make hiking more tolerable in the east coast summer heat. I was fortunate enough to see a bald eagle, porcupine, deer and even a rattlesnake. The soundscape was incredible in the woods with birds singing along the entirety of this trail. The trail totals 30 miles and I was able to complete this trip in 2 days and 1 night. Be sure to stop by pine creek outfitters to arrange a ride at the end of your trip or to simply rent some of their extensive gear to either bike, tube or raft the river. Another one checked off the list!

Very well done. We enjoyed your video very much. Filming was a huge of effort! We live in Wellsboro and have a place on Pine Creek that we visit almost daily. Grew up fishing and floating on Pine Creek. Pine Creek and the gorge area is a jewel that makes Pennsylvania special. ( Also; bears are not uncommon and a special treat to see along the trail.)

What happened to that young lady's hip at such a young age? Wow, this was so cool, I lived in Philly for three years, but never made it out this far. I wish I could have visited so much more country when I lived in that state. That was big snake. No bells on your ankles? I live how the hills are mounds....nice flowing hills all around.. What a good feel, not a jaggy, dangerous land, but more mild then Alaska that is for sure. You are brave to go it alone.

I actually had service at every Vista and alll camp sites on the ridge. I would say I had service 40% of the hike. So it depends on what provider you use. I loved this trail. I do it once a year for my birthday in June. Nice footage also!

Does it come into contact with the actual Pine Creek that runs through the gorge? I'm doing this in August and was wondering if I should bring my fishing rod or leave it at home.

That’s a great question man. I don’t have a good answer for you there. Haven’t researched the rivers/creeks for fishing spots.

If you have two cars just park one at start point and the other at end point. Otherwise prearrange a pick up from a taxi or pine creek. No cell reception. Bring a water filter. Wait until you get a good sight overlooking the canyon. Should be able to find a good one this time of year.

When I did it in 2020 it was 45 I believe. I’m not sure if that’s the current rate or not. Might have been their covid rate too since all business were hurting and they discounted it.
