I get those same feelings every time I harvest a deer and it never gets any easier. I appreciate the fact that you brought this topic up because it’s something no one talks about but most people feel and it says a lot about your character. I think if you don’t have compassion for the animal you hunt then you shouldn’t be hunting. Anyways just remember it’s ok to feel these feelings and also congratulations on the successful harvest!

Allie, As Tim below said, It is ok to be emotional about taking a deer. I still do myself. I give thanks to the animal for what they have provided for myself and my family. It is part of being a hunter. It shows that we care and it is not just about killing. It is not. It about life. One gives to provide for the other.

I just shot two bucks here in NC but I passed up on so many doe because i couldn't stop the emotional part of hunting from getting to me. One doe was with a littler doe and the little one was just prancing around with its little white tail wagging in the air. I couldn't shoot the bigger doe without feeling guilty over it so I refused. My mom and I have been hunting for the past 5 years and these two bucks we got alone with each other. She really is the best part of hunting because we do it together. I'm glad you talked about the emotional aspect of hunting because I really needed to hear someone else with that same feeling I've had this season so far. Congratulations on your hunt!

the hunt is what it's all about, to me. the hiking through the woods, the excitement of cutting a fresh track in the snow and following it. all the things you see and experience on a day spent in the woods. for me, the kill signifies the end. that's why i pass on many shooters through the season, not wanting those days afield to end. just this season, i've already passed on several shooter bucks. one, provided me with an experience that i'll never forget, and would have never imagined was possible. i kept glassing ahead, as i was hiking through the area. i was taking a new route, side-hilling my way in and slowly angling higher. and it's all gentle slopes with drainages. as i crest one, i glass everywhere that is coming into view, before advancing further. i spot a buck on the other side of one drainage. i hunker down so i'm not visible and continue glassing the deer. i had already decided i wasn't shooting it. i waited for it to work it's way lower and then it dropped from sight, so i continued my trek upward. just as i was moving again, i spotted a deer coming straight down toward me from above. it was only about 70 yds away when i spotted it. i stopped and raised the binos, to watch it up real close. it was a nice 4-pt muley.{that's 4 pts on each side} again, i had already chose not to shoot this one either. the deer was clearly seeing me and knew i was there. it just stared for awhile, during which i started to second-guess maybe taking him. but then he started coming closer. i figured he was unsure what i was and was trying to wind me. but he came to 25 yards away and in clear view of me. and i wasn't even trying to be motionless anymore either. it then turned, seemingly fine with me being there, and it walked upward, staying within 50-60 yds. it fed back and forth as i watched. i finally decided i might as well keep moving on with my hunt, and i thought i'd see just how long it would be fine with this. so i started moving with it, as it moved upward, i followed, and as it would walk along the sidehill, i would walk with it. it was going my direction anyway, so i'd see how long this would play out. i'll be damned if i didn't spend the next 40 minutes walking alongside this buck, through the woods. and this isn't forested hills, this is a 3 year old burn, where you can see long distances. so i'm never out of sight ever. i was thinking, hey, this might calm any other deer i might see, having a buck bird-dog through the area with me. throughout that walk, we were as close as 20 yds from each other, and never more that maybe 60 yds. when i finally decided not to follow anymore, he walked up a knoll, along the top, skylined for me, then eventually disappeared over the top. i was completely astonished at what i had just experienced. and probably three times, i had changed my mind and said "okay, i'm taking him", but just as quickly decided not to. i worked my way around the back of that knoll and over around a second knoll, then stopped for some more glassing. as i'm taking off my pack to sit for a bit, and i'm talking to myself about how crazy all this just was, i look over and there he is, still in sight, just walking along. it was like he had been still staying within a certain distance of me, even when i had assumed he had left. and i watched him then move on completely, as i sat glassing the area. it was crazy, and i couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the day.

So for 40 years I have used the tack method. By a pack of white or chrome tacks. As you walk in put 1 on a tree on the side closest to you and on the far side every 5 or 10 ft. Now you can walk in when its dark and out when its dark just by shining your light. Crazy how much one tack pops when the light hits it.

For the Muzzleloader. I keep a roll of electrical tape in my possibles bags and you can tape the muzzle to keep dirt, rain, snow out of the muzzle. You can shoot with it on and no difference to point of impact. Pyrodex is a little corrosive but 777 and BH209 you should be able to go a few weeks before cleaning without worry. I don’t know what’s advertised but speaking from many years 20 plus experience with 777 specifically. Always love the content of your videos! Great stuff always!

Allie, I don't know of any hunter that enjoys the killing. We hunt for a means of procurement of food. Any and every deer you can ethical and quickly take is a trophy. However my grandfather's and my father stopped hunting. Both my grandfather's have passed and my father thank God is still here and just turned 73. Point of this mini novel of a comment is, we will all reach a time when we will know it's time to hang it up but still be involved with the outdoors albeit conservation or teaching the younger generations. However, it's up to you and only you when your time comes for that decision.

Great job! I get the emotions.. just keep in mind what you are doing is completely natural. The deer are a prey species.. also known as a food source. They are here to be eaten. That may sound unfortunate to some people, but that’s reality. In the deers world, they seem to know this. Lions, bears, wolves, and humans eat them. They are delicious, nutritious & abundant for just that reason.
