From "Woodswalker 1968", my daughter and I drove to Bowling Green University in Ohio where it was "total" since my AOE was 90%ish in Michigan. Life changer for sure. I haven’t heard of “stocking caps” referred to as Toboggan’s since my German grandmother in the 60’s...I do remember seeing an eclipse many years ago. This time around I was far from it’s path and so cloudy I couldn’t have viewed it anyway. It would have been a great birthday treat.

"You can't bubble wrap the woods" - a perfect point as is, but I'll also suggest that you can't bubble wrap your kids or your dogs either. Don't _invite_ trouble but stuff is going to happen and that's part of learning life! Burger looked marvelous. We had clouds, but I could easily see the "near-total" eclipse here in NW Arkansas. Say howdy to River for us all! She'll be so excited to be camping again _(without the bubble wrap!!)_ that she may exhaust herself too much to fully enjoy that big treat planned for her! :D -- Oh, and the knife and portable fire-pit seem VERY nice! God bless and Happy Trails, Wade!

This was a great video, mate, I appreciate you sharing it with viewers at home. I've only ever heard those hats called "beanies" or "knit hats" out here in the southwest and western US, but I'm familiar with 'toque' from folks like you on KZbin. You know it's funny, we only got a partial eclipse out here and I nearly missed it, only really saw the pinhole images through the shadows of the tree leaves on the ground. My brother-in-law and my sister had a road trip planned to get out to path of totality somewhere in Texas but BiL found out that their destination was likely going to have a lot of cloud cover that day, just like you experienced. After some hemming and hawwing he ended up splurging on some last-minute plane tickets up to Maine so they could see the totality with fewer clouds. They rushed out there and managed to see it. Bit too rich for my blood but I was impressed by his dedication to seeking it out at least, he was a big astronomy and space guy growing up. Thinking about it now, if I could have the quiet solitude of relaxing in the woods while still feeling the chill of the great shadow of our only moon passing overhead, versus the last-minute stress of hoofing it out to an airport to be stuffed in amongst a sardine can full of people to go see it, I'd take your eclipse day over his. Looked absolutely rejuvenating. I'm sorry you weren't able to see the eclipse proper but I'm still pretty envious of this time you got to spend in the woods. Thanks again for sharing it. Take care.

The word toboggan to describe a hat is a carry over word from the Quebec Metis fur traders of the 1700's. "The word toboggan is derived from the French _tabaganne_ . The French word is thought to have derived from an Algonquian word, most likely Mi’kmaq _tepagan_ or Abenaki _dabôgan_ ." Its usage to describe a knitted cap or toque extends down to the Ohio valley but it is extremely rare to hear in Canada these days. The word toque or tuque has taken over as the word to describe a knitted cap in Canada. The usage of "toboggan" in Canada has diminished since WW2 but apparently its use has continued south of the border. A toboggan hat is a long toque with that tapers into a scarf about 3'-4' long. The scarf end can then be wrapped around your neck and face for added protection from the cold. I had one when I was a kid in Saskatchewan. Toboggan is also the word we use to describe a wooden sled. In that case the word is derived from the Innu and Cree of northern Canada describing a wooded sled with curved front - a traditional form of transport. Note: in both cases the origin of the word is from the First Nations of Canada.
@Woodswalker19656 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info my friend! Thats interesting for sure. I’ve seen those “toboggan” style hats around here but never knew what they were called! Shout out to our First Nation peoples👍

I watched to the end as I always do. 👍 I t is nice when people leave comments. I enjoy the part of to also. That really did look like a relaxing trip. Your burgers looked fantastic and the new fire pit stove looked just dandy. You looked so relaxed, stuffed from supper and just beat out when you were sat by the fire. Too bad the eclipse didn't work out for you. I saw it get totally dark here in Newfoundland but you know as you watched my video. Your breakfast must have been good. The home cured bacon looked delicious. I love an English breakfast but I prefer the white puddings. I've never been hungry enough to eat the blood or black puddings. The name and thought about what is in them is just disturbing 🤢 I could drink tea all day and love the smell of coffee but can't stand the taste so no coffee for me. Anyway, thanks for taking us all along via video......Take care, Bluefin.
