I joined Girl Camper, a group based out of New Jersey, run by Janine Pettit. Many states have their own group leader. I'm in the Illinois Chapter. It has changed my life. I never camped before, or towed a camper, but I'm out there, making it happen. I mess up, but there's always someone who will help. I've had new adventures, made life long friends. There's no wrong way camp!

As a person who has had to rely on my husband for the last two years, it sounds exciting to be on your own. I'm not sure I can do that again. You know, Randi, you have all of us to tell us about your adventures and Thor is great company! Thanks Randi for doing what you do! ❤

I've been solo camping for 5 years with my 2 dogs with a 23' travel trailer. My wonderful husband doesn't really enjoy camping, but he's very supportive and always a phone call away, which gives me great peace of mind. You hit the nail on the head with every point you brought up in your video. It is very empowering to know you can handle camping on your own, but sometimes it does feel lonely. I especially miss having someone to talk to when I find a really cool place to visit and can't really share except through pictures. I rarely talk with other campers, because I don't want anyone to take note that I'm alone. I feel safer that way. But, I still love to go whenever the weather is good. Love your channel, you make camping solo really accessible!

I bought my mini max so I could camp knowing it would be solo. I chose it so I wouldn't be terrified towing, wouldn't need a special tow vehicle that wasn't functional in the city and it fits every where. In the beginning it was a lot not having someone to clarify things with IE am I on the right road. But I cook what I want, I can read at 2 AM, can camp where I want to, never feel guilty heading off to kayak. Taz, my dog and best traveling companion never complains and she protects me. For the most part people are respectful but there has been a couple of times I have been thankful for her. The challenge I face is going on hikes in bear and cougar ( more concerned about the cat ) country. I wish when people see you are solo they would turn and say tag along so you are safe. There have been trails I couldn't cause you need 4 or more. We just move on to something else but it is disappointing. I know people say I can join FB groups and hook up with strangers online for a walk but I am not comfortable with that, what if they no show, have a melt down about my dog, turn out to be an idiot. Just following a group already there means I am just a spare in the back we don't need to talk

I attended the NuCamp Rally, last June. There were over 200 campers. I enjoy camping alone, in groups like that, but I want to give a shout out to the 3 recently widowed women, who came to UCamp. One’s husband, made her promise to come to UCamp, not even a month after he died! She kept their promise! All 3 women came to me, at one time or another, to ask how I do it, camping alone. Losing your all time camping partner of 20 to 30 years, and then trying to camp without them, now that’s another kind of strength!!! I believe, all 3 had sold their large campers and purchased smaller ones. So, I call for a big shout out and hug to those new solo campers!! Thank you for this video, Randi!! Maybe someday, I’ll run into you in the big woods of the UP!! 😉

I too have so much admiration for those who have lost a spouse but have the determination to solo camp! Thank you so much for sharing this story with me! 💕

Thanks for this video. I’m 64 and often camp alone because most of my friends are non-campers. You’re so right, I love the freedom to do things exactly when and how I want to do them, and also miss sharing the experiences I’m having with someone else. A weekend alone can show you a lot about yourself. I appreciate you talking about this.

Finally! Someone has admitted the loneliness of solo camping! I’m guessing, maybe age has something to do with it. This is my third year of camping. I’m 73. I’ve already found the peacefulness, the quietness and appreciation of being alone. I consider myself my own best friend. When traveling with others, I always wanted to just get off the highway to discover what’s after that exit, but now that I have the chance to take that exit, I don’t want to. I also really miss the togetherness and sharing you have, with being with someone you love. I had 5 years of that life’s joy. But, when he passed away, 3 yrs ago, I found that loneliness, too. I live in SW Michigan. Look at all the beautiful places I could go, right here in Michigan! I even joined Girl Campers of Michigan, but they find it to difficult to get multiple sites in Michigan, so they go elsewhere. Next summer, I’m going to make myself go up north or maybe to the UP! Randi, you’ve convinced me that it’s time to move on! I know I’ll love it!!

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Grieving is necessary but it sounds like you might be ready to get back out there? When you are ready I know you can do it and believe you will enjoy yourself!

I am a solo female RVer. My first season was on my own. My husband does not enjoy camping. I am finishing up my third season. The last two seasons have been reserving campsites with my sister and brother-in-law, who own a travel trailer. It makes a big difference having camping companions. Although, like you said, the solitude is also enjoyable. Thanks for the videos!

Randi, you hit the nail on the head. I love Solo camping too but it has its moments of loneliness. So very true. I appreciate your honesty and how you still keep moving forward and not letting it stop what you love to do. I am sure once Tom retires you will be able to do so much more together! ❤

I have a husband that hates camping and so I recently bought a Little Guy Max and decided to go for it. Though I had a lot of anxiety pulling away from home the first time I really enjoyed the freedom and solitude!

Hi Randi, I try to do a solo trip in the spring and the fall. While I really enjoy camping with my wife, i like the freedom to do what i like on the spur of the moment. Plus, I visit with lots of neighbors, always like meeting new friends!

I might have missed it, but did you trade-in the RAM 1500 you had after your Gladiator incident? Looks like an F150 in your more recent videos. We have a Ram that we tow with and are looking to go over to Ford because 1: we don’t like the coil springs when towing in our Ram (feels less unstable), and 2: we like the idea of the pro backup assist on Ford for when our primary driver is unable to tow (backup). We’re looking at downsizing back to small trailer life but aren’t sure that we want to stick with our RAM. Did you swap to Ford for any particular reason?
