Solo Hiking and Wild Camping the Beacons Way in Wales - Day 1

Solo hiking and Wild Camping the Beacons Way which is a 99 mile trail going right through the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. It starts in Abergavenny and works it’s way all the way across the Brecon Beacons to Llangadog.
This is my first multi day solo thru-hike and it was an awesome and unforgettable journey.
The hike started at the Abergavenny train station. I made my way out of town, through a golf coarse and then up to the summit of Skirrid Fawr. Then made my way up into the Black Mountains where the views were incredible. The Beacons Way then took me down to the remains of Llanthony Priory. I topped up the water then headed back up into the Black Mountains to wild camp for the evening. A very enjoyable first day on the Beacons Way.

Fantastic Ryan. I saw the thumbnail and thought this sounds good. It's my back yard and I always enjoy seeing other peoples perspective. It's a grand old hill the Skirrid - can see where I live from there. The conditions were great for you as they were into the main range. Nice video - planning on doing this trail in the summer. Have earmarked the Priory as a decent endpoint for day 1, would you say there were decent wildcamping opportunities around there, or would you recommend pushing on and climbing up into the Black Mountains?

It is a great trail through the Beacons. I would say directly around the Priory is very public so not sure if it’s good for wild camping. But if you push past it and up the first climb there are plenty of places to wild camp. I spent my first night about 2 miles after the Priory. Also there are toilets at the Priory and a tap to fill water up, which is great. If I did the trail again I would bring a water filter as the Pen y fan section didn’t have many options for filling up water (unless they’ve finished building the toilets at the car park) but there’s plenty of rivers and streams etc to filter water from.
