⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider DISASTER! Holding on to the mainsheet at all times is like a lifeline!
When you fall off the boat sailing solo it can be a really bad situation - losing contact with the boat.
Another reason why you should ALWAYS be holding onto the mainsheet.
On this occasion, you see what happens to the catamaran if you are holding on to the mainsheet. The righting process would have been fine had I remembered to take the bag with me!

Ha Ha I love it and wanted to add that the same thing happens even if the crew is out on the wire too. My sailing buddy Rock and I were double trapping in about 15 - 20 knots off the coast in the 1983 Worrel 1000 when Rock's trapeze came loose and in the water he went. He held onto the mainsheet and I went for a ride as the boat flipped immediately. Morale of the story is hang onto that sheet!

Just 1 day late joe! I had first hand experience of this in Rhosneigr bay yesterday. Failed trapeze wire and left holding the snapped off tiller extension in my hand with the boat drifting away. Burnt a few calories chasing the boat and getting her up, celebrated with lots of beer and a barbie.

I suppose you can be pretty sure the boat capsizes immediately when you hold on to the mainsheet, you could see how the traveller (and the mainsheet) is pulled in completely. Would be interesting what happens when you are so close to the wind that the boat does not capsize, I would imagine that the closed sheet and you acting as sea anchor at the back cause the boat to steer into the wind and stop. I'm looking forward for the video "How to stop a moving Tiger after the uprighting while you are still floating in the water and dragged along". What would help, to open (or close) the mainsheet, open (or close) the traveller, (evtl. get the mainsheet to the front beam so that you can manipulate it from the water) As the jib traveler restricts the angle the jib can open (and usually on the "traveller-jibs" there is so little slack in the sheet that it always has some tenson, some shape, some power), what, as the boat will always come up at some angle to the wind, seems to put some pressure on the bow (to bear away) and bring some power into the sail, will cause that the boat starts moving due to the jib: maybe one could unshackle the jibsheet, so that the jib can fly out freely. Maybe that would cause the boat to stop. From my Tiger capsizes also this year (at Wildwind) I can say this movement is a common problem and all struggle getting on the boat in this state. I am happy and surprised that I made it each time on my own, and recommend to all, try out climbing on board while the boat is on the mooring and you do NOT have ground under your feet. Sort yourself out BEFORE you out there in 30 knots of wind and the WW rescue service has not yet arrived, because you were too far out again...

Tiger video coming soon - just a bit scared of that one! I think in fairly strong wind the boat would still capsize even if head to wind.

@@JoyriderTV Admitted - throwing over a Tiger in high winds and getting back up on it is not trivial. On the other hand, you do pioneer work testing that - quasi a test pilot that, before other people fly in it, pushes a plane up to and beyond its limit.

Hi Josh nice tutorial. I think when using a bottle hoist set up with a palstek within the capsize line, it makes it much easier to adjust the position when rightening the Cat. What do you think?

do you have a recommendation for a trapeze setup? I need absolutely everything if I'm going to go for it. (and give it the beans) I've seen rope setups instead of wires and different vests but I always wear a life preserver as well, and tight like my bike helmet. If it doesn't fit it's not worth wearing. what would you recommend for hopefully both at once or fitting over my life jacket? i'll see you friday. you'll see me someday when I can afford to fly to greece! it's almost unbelievable how perfect your little bay is. sham-pag-nya is right, and no yat-chets in sight. looking forward to friday

Josh wonder if you could do a video with a scenario were a crew fell off in high wind on something like a hobie miracle 20, this is my fear that the boat is so over powered that I would not be able to come about without flipping the boat with my 170#s. Not goona lie I do not have a lot of experience in sailing it because of this fear. If a crew fell off at great speed a lot of distance would need to be made up and tacking or jibeing in wind say over 15mph would surely cause a flipping situation. In short how would one negotiate the boat in that high of wind to do a safe recovery, or what not to do. Thanks in advance love your content 😎😎😎

I've fallen off of an F18 (as helm) during the upwind leg of a race, in fairly strong winds. I managed to hold on to the mainsheet, and as a result the boat turned upwind and slowed down. Didn't capsize, with the crew still on board. Just hold on to the mainsheet guys :D

I wonder how far the boat goes with that 18knots wind speed without holding the main sheet. Could be a very long swim or bye bye hobie. So why sailors don’t strap themselves with a sheet to the boat ? incase they fall at least they are safe and can recover the boat.

Hey Joe, maybe I missed something, but at 6:15 why was your rope no longer over the top hull? It was over, then all of a sudden it wasn't anymore. Don't think it would have made much of a difference but it was a bit strange.

hey joe I have a murrays near me but I'm having a heck of a time finding everything I need to get out on the water. I have small rub holes in some of the leech batten pocket areas, and some on the luff, I'm thinking of sailrite for some tape and thread, maybe some more needles, but my biggest concern is the lower triple block w/cam cleats. there's one company in texas that makes them for 90 or so US, then it jumps up to 2 to 300 US. any recommendation on saving cost while getting a reasonable quality? I'm not racing, I want to fish and take it easy for the sake of my crew. Plus we have great whites here sometimes and I don't have trapeze wires so we're trying to take it easy. will these cheaper alternatives work? they have zero comments on quality, but it seems silly to spend as much as the boat and trailer cost on a few odds and ends. please advise.
