Today we are continuing our solo motorbike adventure in Thailand with the aim of reaching the Laos border, however we have a big problem up in the mountains of Lampang.
On route to Chiang Mai 'Zelda' my new Honda CT 125 decides to have a complete back break failure and so we are left stranded on the side of the road, how are we going to get out of this situation?
I have seen a few other motorbike channels suffer break downs in remote areas such as Itchy Boots in Guatemala, but how are we gonna get out of this one....

😂😂😂😂 get yourself on a motorcycle repair course and maybe rider training. You should be using front brake a little more than the rear.

Ditch that false tank and use the very practical rack that is fitted underneath it for holding a basic tool kit. Even if you can't use it most Thais are pretty practical people and will help you out.

Hey Paddy. You really make me laugh sometimes!🤣 You really did panic over nothing! Firstly, Zelda has a disc brake on the rear, not a drum, as shown in your footage. Secondly, you should always use the front brake going down hill much more than the back brake (except on sand), so you could have continued quite safely using engine braking too. The driver was probably right and it just overheated, if you were only using the back brake all the time (or the hydraulic fluid is low or the line came off). Anyway, no doubt you will have learned a lot watching Zelda get fixed. However, always better to be safe than sorry, so you did the right thing as you weren't sure. Lovely drone shot of Doi Suthep at the end too! I can't wait to be back there in November, and hopefully Laos in December! Carry on..!

God bless you Paddy. You’re keeping it real bro’. The tough times make the special that much more special. On a related note: you want to match your cc’s with the weight of you and of what you’re carrying in pounds (not kg’s). If you’re 200 lbs wet and you have a 100 lbs of gear plus modifications then you shouldn’t be on anything under a 300 cc. And that’s for your safety rather for any other reason. Secondly, your front brake takes care of 70% of your stopping. So, use it mostly and use the back brake and the front brake in emergencies. Use the back brake only also on a steep downhill especially if the tarmac is wet.

Haha! I'm very late to the party and probably just repeating what others have said but you would've realised it's a disc on the rear and has probably just overheated through over use...you should use your front brake a lot when descending...this also shares the load between the two and lessens the chance of overheating issues...btw my diagnosis could be completely wrong??! 5555

I really need your help right now on figuring something out for me. Starting October 1st you don't need any vaccination or proof of negative test result to enter Thailand. My issue is I get to Bangkok from America on September 30th 11:20 p.m.. that seems to be 40 minutes before they're lifting it. The question I have is will I need a negative test results since I'm unvaccinated will they still be enforcing it right up until midnight September 30th?

the greatest stopping power on any motorcycle is found at the front wheel. ideally use both brakes and on very steep descents, of which there are loads in thailand, it is best to use as much engine compression as possible in low gears to control speed and thus prevent the brakes from overheating. If we only use the rear brake, there is a high probability that the liquid will overheat until it boils and there we will no longer have a brake. In the case of your Honda Dream, since it used a drum brake, which is a system without hydraulic fluid, that did not happen.

Paddy your videos are absolutely awesome. I get the feeling of travelling with you, especially with the ups and downs. I just discovered you a few weeks ago. Loved your Vietnam trip. Going back and watching your Thai provinces videos now. You're production quality has improved greatly. I have notifications turned on now! Sounds like you've figured the braking thing out but yes, the front brake needs to do the vast majority of your braking. It's the more powerful brake. The back brake is good for stability at slower speeds. Questions, do you see many larger bikes around? How do you think a big new adventure bike like a BMW R1250 GS would fair on SE Asian roads? Would it handle them? Do you think it would get a bit of attention of the wrong kind? (e.g. theft or Vietnamese police wanting to see a Vietnamese licence)

As it seems you have no answer so far and I just came across your comment. As working as an expatriate in Vietnam for 3 years so I guess I have a right to give you some information. Riding a big bike in Vietnam definitely you will gain lot of attention not only from the passersby but theft also. We had a showroom when I was working in HCMC and we put many nice pots of plants in front of our entrance door, every time when we lost them we bought new ones until one day my staffs stopped me from putting anything outside our property. LOL 🤣 I was so stubborn by keeping buying new ones, they said. Well, for Thailand, don't think you will gain much of attention driving a big bike but Lamborghini. And if you get robbed here, you are so much unlucky in my opinion but it does happen anyhow as bad people do exist everywhere on earth. I got robbed once when i was in HCMC exhibition center early morning when the entrance door was not yet opened. 😅 The road conditions in Vietnam is quite difficult so suggest not to ride a long journey each day though. Wish you luck!

To be fair it's good that this happened because it's an important learning experience. Most likley you overheated your back brake. I know it feels natural to gently press the back break the entire way down, but you can't do that. Very dangerous. Stay in a low gear and use engine breaking as your primary break going downhill, and only use front / back when needed. And never rely on your back brake as your primary, it's your weakest one.

Hi Paddy Just had to laugh at your motorcycle "breakdown" not really knowing why the food brake would have stopped working either, but as a long time motorcycle driver (big ones) I can tell you that it is wrong to mainly use the food (rear) brake. It is more safe and more efficient to use the front brake, in particular since it is even ABS supported. The biggest effect you would achieve with both but more force should be applied on the front then on the back. Number 1 rule for safety if an emergency brake needs to be done. Just try it out and don't be afraid to apply heavy front wheel braking. It is actually good if you test in a safe environment such manoeuvres and become confident for the day you may need it. Again, stop using the rear brake as your main braking tool. The opposite is who real biker do it! But most of all safe keep having safe travels. Enjoying your videos a lot.

Oh Paddy I feel for you. I tried to visit the sky temple in August (unfortunately it was closed due to bad weather) and took them same route. I hired a car from Chiang Mai and it was pretty hairy to say the least going over that mountain road 😮 Just me and my two children, dodging boulders, landslides and driving through streams! Our highlight was the night market in Lampang, we were the only western faces there. It gave my kids an authentic look at local Thailand. Love your content. We explored many amazing place this summer after watching your channel for recommendations 😊

I get tired seeing these steps again. Hell of a climb but surely one of the most breathtaking locations of Thailand. Its a must for anyone visiting Northern Thailand. Those bells have such a relaxing vibe to them.

This is why we all told you from the beginning you need a 300CC or REAL motorcycle for long distance travel. You argue, get mad but over and over this is your situation. I have 140K miles on my CBR 300. No issues, just oil changes and 1 set of tires.

Thanks Paddy for this very informative video. I think 250cc would make a lot of difference, however, perhaps then you would lose agility due to the extra weight.

Love ya vlogs, Paddy. We will take in mind your hints regarding Vietnam north - we will be there on a Benelli TRK 502 in april 2024. Being a Motorbiker with nearly 42 Years of experience, actually driving aDucati 1200 Multi with 160HP & lots of experience in Mountainbiking: Have always your center of gravity near front wheel. Why? It´s the only wheel, which reacts on your decided direction. If you have to brake, more and more weight of you & the bike will be distributed to the front wheel. I do not use the rear-brakes of all my bikes - except the Harley Roadking - the center of gravity od the Roadking is more on the rear. Back to your issue: In this situation, you´re not trapped. Move your ass over the tank-dummy and focus on your front wheel. It´s comparable to skiing: If you do fear the steep decline, and move your ass to the rear - you will crash. Face the decline, fold your arms gorilla-like, move your ass to the front, and drive that bike to down the hill. If your balls tend to turn into rubber-erasers, you're on the right track.

At 81 years old, I have learned that the hardest lessons I experienced, & the most embarrassing lessons I had were always the ones in which I learned the most. From those times, I transferred concepts into other experiences to bolster my success on other problems completely unrelated. So, do not be too hard on yourself. We all live & learn. That's life, as Frank Sinatra sang the lyrics written by Paul Anka many decades ago. Life is a process. Enjoy the mistakes as learning experiences. It's what we all do while we are busy living life. Enjoy the journey of life itself. And never be embarrassed of your mistakes but embrace them as though they are gentle nudges from the gods above to remind us, we are only human. BTW, I wish so much I could do what you are doing, so I am enjoying your videos so much. I really love your experiences. Be cautious and yet, still enjoy your journey. An Addendum: OMG!!! Your staying in an absolutely HEAVENLY resort with a gorgeous babbling brook to enjoy with beautiful greenery all around your DELUXE accommodating room with all the amenities as you're about to partake of a scrumptious burger with ample fries and a cold beer, and you get excited over a skinny stick bug? I love it.🥰😂🙂😍🍺🍔🍟 Well, now I'm just plain jealous.😄

M8.... In motorcycle safety classes you learn 70% of your braking is done with the front brakes.... Going down the hill with only front brakes shouldn't have been a problem if you would've simply used a low gear as an "engine brake"....

The fancy cup holder, what a win 💪 For a phone holder/mount, consider buying quadlock mate, i think it is the best one out at this moment 🤔 Anyhow, i think you need to design a sweet zelda name/logo/sticker to go on her 🤫 Back on topic, realy love that view and droneshots from up above that sky temple, the serenity 😯 Also on the famous bucketlist 🙏 Love the digital speedomether on Zelda ❤️ Drivin without a backbrake, owno.. i have my motor license and drive one, bud i always use my frontbrake and the backbrake for extra emergency, so the otherway arround 😏 but here is is always flat flat flat roads, so i understand buddy 👊 Ow yes the infamous outside insta bathtub location, sweet Mr Doyle 👍 The food brought your inner Child back up mate 🤣 But the outdoor bathtub is a gem, well done with this vlog, and as always, C Ya in the next one Paddy, cheers 🙌🍻
